Jessica looked at him for a full ten seconds.
She drained the remaining whiskey in the bottle and casually tossed the empty bottle aside.
"Whatever."
Given the authorization, William tapped heavily on the screen without hesitation.
"Claim application accepted!"
"Service Item: On-site environmental comprehensive management service after high-risk target elimination."
"Currently allocating the most suitable 'Clean-Up Specialist' from the 'Risk Hedging Resource Pool'... Allocation successful!"
"Estimated arrival time: 5 minutes."
"Friendly reminder: To ensure service quality, please temporarily avoid or close your eyes, client and related personnel."
William breathed a sigh of relief.
He looked at the bewildered Jessica and revealed a relieved and proud smile.
See, I told you.
What I sell is not just insurance.
Five minutes.
William glanced at the countdown on his phone screen, feeling that these three hundred seconds were longer than all the time he had experienced since transmigrating.
What if, after five minutes, it wasn't some 'Clean-Up Specialist' who arrived, but a SWAT team shouting "FBI! OPEN UP!" through megaphones? Then he could directly apply for the Guinness World Record for 'Fastest Deceased Transmigrator in the Marvel Universe'.
Time ticked by, second by second.
Jessica's gaze shifted.
She seemed to have already concluded that this was a ridiculous farce.
Three.
Two.
One.
"0:00"
"'Clean-Up Specialist' has arrived at the designated service area."
"Service begins."
Nothing happened.
No knocking, no breaking glass.
Dead silence.
Jessica's mouth twitched, a sneer of "I knew it."
She was about to speak, to say something to puncture this ridiculous scam—
"Buzz—"
An extremely low hum, almost imperceptible to human ears, suddenly resonated throughout the apartment without warning.
It wasn't from outside the door, nor outside the window, but permeated from every corner of the room.
Immediately after.
William and Jessica simultaneously felt a strange sense of incongruity.
The light in the room hadn't changed.
But all the shadows at this moment seemed to have been soaked in ink.
They became deep, viscous, as if they had come alive.
The shadows in the corner began to writhe and twist, like an inky tide, silently spreading towards the center of the room—where Kilgrave's body lay.
Jessica's muscles instantly tensed.
This bizarre sight was beyond her comprehension, stirring her most primal vigilance.
"Don't move!"
William whispered, moving closer to Jessica.
"Close your eyes!"
He himself was the first to tightly close his eyes.
Are you kidding me!
One more look at this kind of scene, clearly beyond the realm of science, could cause his SAN value to plummet.
He was just an insurance salesman.
He didn't want to become dinner for some unspeakable entity due to excessive curiosity.
Jessica didn't listen to him.
The word 'obedient' was not in her dictionary.
But the next second, she too had no choice but to close her eyes.
Because an invisible something seeped out from that spreading 'darkness'.
It wasn't a physical attack, nor a mental shock.
It was a pure, high-dimensional 'information'.
Like a mortal who accidentally glimpsed the true form of a deity.
A massive, incomprehensible stream of information surged through her retina, savagely assaulting her brain.
Nausea, dizziness, and a profound fear stemming from primal instinct instantly seized her.
She grunted and tightly closed her eyes, only then feeling the terrifying pressure slightly diminish.
William's reminder, "Close your eyes."
It wasn't a suggestion; it was a warning.
William kept his eyes tightly shut, and he smelled something.
At first, it was a faint, ozone-like fresh scent, like a forest after rain.
Immediately after, a hint of disinfectant-like cleanliness, yet softer and not at all pungent, mixed into the scent.
Then, there was sound.
An extremely subtle 'shushing' sound, like countless dust particles being brushed by a gentle breeze.
The dents in the walls.
The splintered wood grain on the floor.
The lingering smell of blood and alcohol in the air... All the discordant 'noises' were smoothed out and erased by this 'breeze'.
The entire process was quiet and efficient.
William could even feel that the 'breeze' also brushed over the unconscious family of four.
Their breathing seemed to become more steady and prolonged, as if they had merely had an insignificant dream.
About two minutes passed, or perhaps only thirty seconds.
In this darkness, devoid of sight, time lost its meaning.
When the low hum and all the subtle sounds receded like a tide, William's anxious heart returned to its place.
He heard a soft chime in his mind.
"Ding!"
"On-site environmental comprehensive management service after high-risk target elimination has been completed."
"All physical and biological contamination has been thoroughly removed and rendered harmless."
"Damaged property has been restored to its original state."
"Memories of relevant witnesses have been optimized, and potential risks have been eliminated."
"New ability acquired: Mental Fortitude (Passive)"
"Ability description: Your cerebral cortex and nervous system have received fundamental-level reinforcement, significantly enhancing your resistance to mental attacks such as mind control, telepathy, and illusions. From now on, Mom no longer has to worry about you being brainwashed."
"Client Jessica Jones's insurance contract has been terminated."
He opened his eyes and took a deep breath.
Only a faint, fresh scent remained in the air, like that of a newly renovated room.
Then, he saw the scene before him.
He was stunned.
The Villa was still the Villa.
But it was no longer the Villa it had been just moments ago.
The floor was spotless, without a trace of blood or scratches.
The walls were smooth as new, and even the doorframe that had been kicked open earlier was restored to its original state.
The house was so clean it looked like a newly delivered show home.
Most importantly—
Kilgrave's body was gone.
That twisted, wide-eyed, troublesome source that could have been the beginning of all nightmares had simply vanished into thin air.
Not even a single strand of hair, not a drop of blood, was left behind.
William subconsciously looked at the family of four.
They were still sleeping on the sofa and carpet, but their postures had become much more relaxed, and the painful expressions on their faces had disappeared, replaced by a sense of peace.
They looked like ordinary people napping in their living room on a weekend afternoon.
William slowly walked over to Jessica.
She was still leaning against the wall, her eyes closed, her long eyelashes trembling slightly.
Her face was pale, and her chest was heaving violently.
That brief 'gaze' earlier had clearly had a significant impact on her.
"It's over."
Jessica slowly opened her eyes.
When her gaze swept across the room, her pupils constricted sharply. She saw everything.
But she didn't see the man whose neck she had personally twisted.
She quickly walked to where the body had been, stretched out her hand, and touched the spotless floor.
It was cold and clean.
There was no warmth or stickiness of blood.
Everything had been erased.
The evidence of her revenge.
The traces of her violence.
The sin of her killing a person... Everything had been completely wiped from this World by an incomprehensible, unimaginable power.
