Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: How Many Kensei?

On the first day of school, Sora went to the Spiritual Arts Academy's logistics department.

He saw that petite Shinigami again.

"Miss Shirai, aren't you a gate guard?" Sora asked, confused.

"I was on duty that day! I'm actually in the logistics department!" Riko Shirai took out a booklet, glanced at it, and handed it to Sora. "This is the class roster. The schedule is right behind it. Professor Katori, you teach swordsmanship, right? If the wooden swords in the training hall get damaged, you can come to me for new ones."

"Thank you, Miss Shirai." Sora received the class roster and schedule.

Sora looked at the roster. There were over thirty students in the class he was teaching.

Most of the names were unfamiliar, but his attention was quickly drawn to one student's name.

"If I'm teaching him, it won't be a waste of my time, right?!" Sora thought, pleased.

He had seen Kensei Muguruma on the class roster!

Although Kensei Muguruma is used as a unit of measurement in the world of Shinigami, that's only when comparing him to powerhouses at the captain level or above.

In reality, Kensei's talent surpassed the vast majority of Shinigami. He could absolutely be called a genius.

Sora continued reading down the list and found another familiar name at the very end—Shinji Hirako!

Like Kensei Muguruma, Shinji Hirako was also a genius with the potential to reach the captain level.

This class is strong!

Sora's anticipation grew even more.

Sora arrived at the swordsmanship classroom.

The swordsmanship classroom was a room without any seats. Both sides were lined with rows of wooden racks, on which wooden swords were neatly arranged.

When Sora entered, the classroom was full of energy, buzzing like countless little bees.

Many people were standing in the middle of the room, forming a circle. The sound of an argument came from within.

"I told you, I didn't step on your breakfast!"

"But everyone else said you got here before them."

"It was already like that when I got to the classroom!"

"Wasting food is shameful—I challenge you to a duel!"

Sora raised an eyebrow and moved closer.

Inside the crowd, two students were clashing with wooden swords.

Their conflict seemed to have started over breakfast.

Spirit bodies with higher spiritual power needed to eat, just like bodies of flesh and blood. The food in the Soul Society was also composed of spirit particles.

A student in the crowd noticed Sora. Following Sora's signal, none of them spoke up to disturb the two who were fighting.

"I won't go easy on you just because you're a woman!"

The silver-haired boy speaking was sturdily built. Every swing of his sword was heavy and powerful, and he looked like trouble.

No form at all.

After a few glances, Sora could tell the silver-haired boy had never practiced with a sword.

Sora had a guess about his identity and immediately checked his panel.

[Kensei Muguruma]

[Talent: S]

[Reiatsu: lv15]

[Affinity Level: Stranger]

[Status: Annoyed (I didn't do it!)]

The silver-haired boy was indeed the Kensei Muguruma he had been thinking about.

Fighting him was a young girl with noticeably fluffy, dark hair.

Clack—

The two wooden swords collided with a crisp sound.

The girl blocked Kensei's sword, and the impact made the base of her thumb go numb.

She was clearly at a disadvantage in terms of size, yet she managed to parry Kensei's heavy blows several times.

Sora focused his thoughts and checked the girl's panel.

[Kana Azashiro]

[Talent: S]

[Reiatsu: lv10]

[Affinity Level: Stranger]

[Status: Starving (My breakfast is gone, boohoo!)]

This student's panel was a great surprise to Sora. It was a name he had never seen in his previous life's memories, yet she possessed S-rank talent.

For Sora, this was a truly unexpected delight.

As a teacher, the better his students' talents were, the happier he would naturally be.

Kensei Muguruma shouted and swung his sword with all his might.

The wooden sword in the girl's hand was a bit old, with some cracks along the edge, but she was completely unaware of this as she raised it to meet the attack.

Clack—

The two wooden swords met, and the girl's sword shattered from the impact.

Kensei was startled, but it was too late to pull back his strength. The momentum of his wooden sword continued, slashing towards the girl's face.

In that split second, Sora instantly appeared between the two of them.

He leaned forward in a lunge stance, his hands raised above his shoulders.

Clap—

With his hands together, Sora firmly caught Kensei's wooden sword.

Kensei looked incredulously at the man in front of him—he had caught his attack with his bare hands!

The girl behind Sora was just as astonished.

She knew how much force was behind Kensei's attacks, so she understood better than anyone how difficult it was to catch that wooden sword empty-handed.

"Matches between classmates should stop before anyone gets hurt. Don't damage your relationship," Sora said gently, lowering the wooden sword.

"Are you our teacher?" Kensei noticed Sora wasn't wearing a student uniform and quickly figured it out.

"I am your swordsmanship teacher," Sora nodded.

The surrounding students were also very interested in the empty-handed catch Sora had demonstrated.

"Teacher, how did you catch the sword?"

"That move was so cool!"

"Yeah, can you teach us!"

"Teacher, I want to learn that too!"

Just then, a flippant voice came from the doorway: "Yo—it's pretty lively in here, huh?"

Everyone looked over. Standing at the door was a blond-haired boy.

Sora focused his thoughts and checked the boy's panel.

[Shinji Hirako]

[Talent: S]

[Reiatsu: lv20]

[Affinity Level: Stranger]

[Status: Full of energy]

A single class had three students with S-rank talent!

Sora had been appraising students he passed on the way here. Most of them had C-rank talent; he hadn't encountered a single S-rank student.

And yet, his class had three of them!

Sora appraised the other students in his class. They were mostly C and D-rank.

"Whose breakfast is that at the corner of the doorway? I accidentally stepped on it, so I went to the cafeteria and brought back another one!" Shinji said with a swagger, dangling a bag he was holding.

"That's mine!" Kana Azashiro's eyes widened, fixed on the bag Shinji was holding.

"See, I told you it wasn't me!" Kensei Muguruma spread his hands helplessly.

"I'm sorry! I was just so hungry I lost my head!" Kana Azashiro quickly pressed her hands together, raised them above her head, and bowed in apology.

Seeing the misunderstanding was resolved, Sora said with a smile:

"Hello everyone, let me first introduce myself. My name is Katori Sora. I'm your homeroom teacher and also your swordsmanship teacher. You can all call me Professor Katori from now on."

...

Today, Sora taught the students some basic stances, how to hold a sword, and how to practice basic swings.

He glanced at Kana Azashiro, who looked like she was about to starve to death, and decided not to let the class run late.

Since the teacher had arrived, Kana hadn't eaten the breakfast Shinji had compensated her with, and she had been hungry the whole time.

"That's all for today's swordsmanship class. Swordsmanship is one of the most important fundamental skills for a Shinigami. I hope you will take it seriously and practice diligently. Who knows, one day, your daily efforts might just save your life."
