After more than a month on the job, Katori Sora finally met his direct supervisor, the head of the Swordsmanship Department, Ashido. Ashido had short, reddish-brown hair and seemed to have a rather reserved personality.
"I will be departing with the team to conquer Hueco Mundo soon, and matters within my squad are demanding, making it difficult to get away. My apologies for holding our first department meeting so late in the semester."
Ashido's face was full of apology. "I am truly an incompetent department head. Professor Katori has just started, and there must be many things he is still unfamiliar with. I would ask Professor Tanuki to please look after him."
"You're too kind, sir. The subjugation of Hueco Mundo is the more urgent matter. It is a perilous place, so thorough preparations are essential. Besides, Professor Tanuki has given me a great deal of help, which has made my work much smoother," Sora said gently.
To maintain the balance of the three realms, the Soul Society organized an expedition to Hueco Mundo every one or two hundred years to conduct a punitive campaign and cull the number of Hollows.
"Thank you for your understanding, Professor Katori. By the way, I heard there were two new Professors in the Swordsmanship Department..." Ashido looked towards the other Professor, Souke Tanuki.
Including Head Ashido, the department now had a total of five Professors. However, only three were present in the meeting room. Professor Murata, a veteran Professor, was advanced in age and had suddenly fallen ill last week, so he was on sick leave. The other new Professor, Tokinada Tsunayashiro, had not come.
"Ah, yes. Professor Tsunayashiro has a family matter and probably won't be able to make it today," Souke Tanuki said with a sense of helplessness. In truth, Tokinada hadn't requested leave, but Tanuki didn't want to offend him, so he wouldn't mention it.
"I see," Ashido nodded. Hearing the new Professor's surname, he understood. It was likely another great noble just looking to pad his resume.
"Professor Murata is getting on in years. I have already visited him. It's uncertain how long it will take for him to recover, but his class cannot be left without a Professor. Professor Tanuki, do you think you could spare some time to help take over his class?" Ashido asked, somewhat embarrassed. If it weren't for his demanding squad duties, this task should have fallen to him.
"Ah... I still have to teach my own students. If I also have to teach Professor Murata's class, I'm afraid I'll be overwhelmed," Tanuki said.
"I can discuss it with the Professors from other departments to reschedule the classes to avoid conflicts," Ashido offered.
"The main issue is that my students are about to graduate, and there's a lot to manage. I also have to lead them on a practical internship in the World of the Living. I'm truly swamped..." Tanuki said with a difficult expression.
Starting from their third year, students at the academy had an annual practical course to experience the duties of an official Soul Reaper, and the homeroom Professor was responsible for leading them. Both Professor Murata and Tanuki were homeroom Professors for graduating classes. If Tanuki took over Murata's class, he would be responsible for the internship courses of two graduating classes simultaneously, a heavy burden indeed.
Sora thought for a moment. He was actually well-suited to take over this class. Teaching an additional class meant he would receive double the teaching feedback rewards daily. While the daily reward wasn't much, it would add up to a considerable amount over a year. Moreover, based on his understanding of the Professor System, guiding students through practical courses should also grant rewards. The courses were relatively simple for an official Soul Reaper like him. He had no reason to refuse an opportunity for extra gain.
"Sir, since Professor Tanuki is too busy, I will take over Professor Murata's class," Sora said with a smile.
"Professor Katori has only just joined. Can you handle two classes?" Ashido was surprised by his initiative.
"I seem to be well-suited for the teaching profession. I believe there shouldn't be any problem. If any issues do arise, I can always ask the experienced Professor Tanuki for advice," Sora said with a smile.
Seeing Sora volunteer, Tanuki quickly said, "I heard from the new Professor in the Kidō department that Professor Katori's students have nothing but praise for him! He's a natural-born Professor. If you encounter any difficulties, Professor Katori, don't hesitate to ask me!"
"Then I'll entrust Professor Murata's class to you, Professor Katori. If you run into any trouble, you can come find me at Squad 11," Ashido said. Ashido was originally the 3rd seat of Squad 11 and was being promoted to lieutenant upon his return. He was currently very busy preparing personnel and supplies for the expedition.
After Ashido left, Tanuki patted Katori Sora's shoulder and said gratefully: "Professor Katori, you've really helped me out this time. If you hadn't taken over, the task would have surely fallen on me. Just the thought of teaching two graduating classes at the same time is a headache. After all, being a homeroom Professor involves much more than just teaching."
"You're too kind, Professor Tanuki. We're colleagues; it's only right that we help each other," Sora said.
"Haha, Professor Katori, I'll treat you to a drink after work!" Tanuki laughed heartily.
...
The next day, Sora received the new schedule and the roster for the 6th-year class. His schedule was now quite packed. The first-year class had six swordsmanship lessons per week, while the 6th-year class only had four.
After several years of study, a student's talents had generally become apparent. Starting from the 6th year, they could choose advanced courses for a year of intensive training. The advanced swordsmanship course was usually taught by the department head, but since Ashido was busy, the task had fallen to Murata. Now, Sora had taken over Murata's duties, meaning he was responsible for both the 6th-year class and the advanced course. So, in addition to his regular classes, he had to teach three advanced swordsmanship classes each week.
For Sora, however, this was a good thing. The more classes he taught, the more feedback rewards he could get.
He then looked at the 6th-year class roster, and his attention was soon drawn to one particular name.
