Chapter 24 - (chapter twenty-four) genin reserves

Yuto walked into the large building as he saw another counter with a receptionist behind it. He was honestly tired of talking with them. He walked towards the desk, either way, letting a quiet yawn slip from his lips. He took a sip from the coffee cup in his hand, approached the desk, and slapped his shinobi license on the counter. It had become a routine by now.

The receptionist looked up from her monitor, seeing Yuto's head barely peaking over the counter, before looking down at the shinobi license.

"Yuto Suzuki, reporting for genin reserve orientation," he said tiredly.

She typed in his name and registration number into the computer, looking at his shinobi license.

"Okay, report to sector three. Here's your building pass, don't lose it," she said, handing him a small blue slip of paper with the leaf insignia on it.

Yuto gave a nod, grabbing the slip.

"Thanks," he said, walking away.

He walked down the long corridors of the genin corps training facility. He let out a sigh, taking another sip of coffee. He made it to sector three following the map coordinates molded into small plates on the walls of the corridors. The entrance had two push-open doors similar to the ones at high schools.

Coincidentally, when he pushed open the doors, he was met with a wide, high-ceilinged room similar to that of a high school basketball gym, excluding the bleachers. The floors were concrete, and there were small windows at the top of the walls.

When he stepped all the way in, he was met with about one hundred genin.

"That's all," Yuto thought.

He walked towards the group of genin, noticing the chunin instructor standing in front of the students speaking.

"ok, you are here because you are a shit ninja," the chunin instructor said calmly.

He was about to speak again, but stopped his speech, seeing Yuto's form walking towards him, sipping a cup of coffee with a bored expression on his face.

"I'm Genin Yuto Suzuki. I was told to report to Sector Three," Yuto said indifferently.

The man sighed. "Fall in line, somewhere, it doesn't matter," the instructor said.

Yuto gave a nod, walking towards the bundle of genin and finding a place at the front.

The genin were looking at him in curiosity and disdain, at his uninterested attitude.

The chunin instructor spoke again

"Like I was saying, you are all here because you're shitty ninja,"

Yuto raised a questioning eyebrow but refrained from interrupting.

The chunin instructor noticed this and continued.

"I'm here to make you less shitty," the instructor finished.

There were a few murmurs in the bundle of genin, but they were quickly silenced by the killing intent of the chunin instructor despite his calm face.

"I'll do well to break your weak little bodies into little pieces and then fix them back together, so you all can amount to something," he said in a calm tone once again.

Yuto raised his hand, his facial expression still uninterested.

"What is it?" the chunin asked.

"Any rules we should be aware of?" Yuto asked, taking another sip of coffee.

"Hum, good question. Well, the only thing you need to do is do what I say," he said as if it were obvious.

Yuto just nodded.

The chunin clapped his hands together, grabbing the attention of the genin, before speaking.

"ok, as you know, we did file checks and are already aware of your skills, but I want to see them for myself," he said with a pause.

He then held up five fingers before speaking again. "For the first five days, that will be your orientation and skill test. There will be five different tests, one for each day."

The bundle of gein started murmuring again, as the chunin lost his composure for the first time, his face contorting in anger.

"Shut the hell up," he said coldly.

The genin went mute, hearing the no bullshit tone of the chunin instructor.

"Of course, if you fail to do what I ask of you, there will be consequences. I'll let the first geniuses be the examples," he said, his tone becoming calm again.

"bipolar much," Yuto thought, taking a loud sip of coffee.

He received a glance from the chunin before the chunin began to speak again.

"On day one, I'll test your physical strength," he said, holding up one finger.

"On day two, I'll test your stamina," he said, holding up two fingers.

"On day three, I'll test your chakra control," he said, holding up three fingers.

"On day four, I'll test your knowledge," he said, holding up four fingers.

"And finally, on day five, I'll test your combat ability. Your scores will be documented and put into your file. Along with that, we'll have a leaderboard. Those who reach the top five slots will receive contribution points, but you won't be able to use those points until you've completed the six-month training period," the chunin explained.

"Any questions?" he asked.

As soon as he asked, a few hands shot up.

The chunin sighed before he pointed at one of the genin who had their hand up.

"Um, what about ninjutsu?" a teenage boy said timidly, a pair of goggles on his head.

The chunin scoffed. "I couldn't care less about you being able to complete the academy three jutsu. I doubt that any of you actually mastered them either way. We'll focus on the fundamentals and then maybe you can think about ninjutsu," the chunin said, clearly aggravated by the question despite his calm tone.

"Anything else?" he asked.

The same hands that were raised before shot back up again.

The chunin pointed at another genin.

"Um, instructor, sir! You mentioned we would be here for six months, and we weren't allowed to leave," said a teenage girl.

The chunin looked at the girl questioningly and gestured for her to continue with his hand.

"Well, where are we supposed to live, and how will we be able to afford are living, if we can't leave to take missions?" the teenage girl asked.

"Here in the genin corps training period, living situations are provided. I'm sure you noticed the size of the facility when you walked in?" said the chunin instructor.

The genin, along with Yuto, gave him a nod.

"Its size is to accommodate a living quarters for you bunch and one thousand others," the chunin explained.

The genin gasped, hearing the large number of genin in the genin reserves program.

Yuto became curious, raising his hand before anyone else could.

"Yes?" the chunin asked, clearly not fond of Yuto's indifferent attitude.

Yuto took a sip of coffee before responding. "I'm curious, why would the village put so much funding and resources into a program made up of mere genin?" Yuto asked.

"Some of our village's strongest shinobi go through this program. While you bunch are shit shinobi now, you are the future of our village. This program is why the leaf village remains the strongest of the five nations," the chunin explained, with a mix of pride in his tone.

Yuto nodded. "I see," Yuto said.

"What else?" the chunin asked, clearly not appalled to answer all of the genin's questions.

Another hand raise.

"Yes," he said.

"Our class consists of about ninety genin, so where are the rest?" a blond-haired boy asked, brushing his long blond locks out of his face.

"A Yamanaka?" the chunin instructor thought before he spoke.

"Our facility is split up into dozens of divisions, consisting of living courters, indoor and outdoor training grounds, and classrooms. Each sector has over seventy genin, and the facility is divided into four sections. This means your living quarters will be merged with two other bunches similar to yours," the chunin instructor explained.

Before he could even ask, a few more hands shot up.

He sighed and just gestured for one of them to ask.

"Um, what about showers and bathrooms. Oh, and also women's stuff," said one of the female genin boldly.

"We have a shower and bathroom for each floor of your living quarters. Of course, females and males will be separated, and your "women's stuff" will be provided by the facility management, along with toothpaste, soap, deodorant, etc," the chunin explained.

"Alright, no more questions. Ask a friend or the facility management," the chunin said.

The genin let out a groan, as they clearly had more questions.

"Now, since today is the first day, I want to see your physical strength," he said.

"Follow me to the outside grounds," the chunini said, gesturing for the group of genin to follow him.

All ninety followed behind him.

"single file line just like they teach at the academy," the chunin grunted out.

Yuto fell into the front of the line as he was already in front of the group of genin. If he were being honest, he didn't want any part to do with the physical portion of things. His arms and legs were twigs, and his frame was small. He was probably the smallest one out of the genin, and yes, he was also the youngest out of the genin, being only ten years old, but he wasn't the size of a ten-year-old. He knew that much from when he stood next to the five-year-old Ten-Ten and Naruto; he hoped he wouldn't stay this short forever. Despite his good looks, he wouldn't be able to find a woman later on if he stayed a midget.

He and the rest of his fellow genin made it to the training site. The Genin Corps training facility was on the edge of the village for a reason. There were long trails and paths with clearings meant for taking stops. The training ground consisted of a dirt terrain without a patch of grass, and it sat behind the gymnasium-like building.

"Sometimes there are other classes out here, but thankfully for you guys, we get it all to ourselves today," the chunin instructor said.

"Today, you'll push boulders," he said.

The class started murmuring, looking at their peers for answers, as they were confused as to what the instructor meant.

The instructor walked towards a shed-like structure, swinging open the door. Right when he did that, a dozen boulders rolled out, stopping in a single file line in front of the genin, facing the football field long training ground as the genin gasped in shock and surprise.

"You will take turns. We have ten boulders, meaning only ten of you can go at once. You'll be given a one-minute time limit. Failing to push the boulder down and back within the given time will mean your test will be scored as a zero. Failing to properly obey directions will mean your test will be scored as a zero," the instructor explained.

"Any questions?" he asked.

No one raised their hand.

"Alright, may I have ten volunteers?" he said.

Only a few stepped forward.

"Come on, seven more." After a few moments, the instructor sighed. "Fine, I'll choose the rest," the instructor said.

Yuto's heart dropped to his ass. If he went first, he knew he'd embarrass himself in front of everyone. He was physically weak, and there was no way to get around that, unless he knew how to augment his strength. At the academy, the students were taught how to increase their speed and strength with chakra, but not enough to push a boulder up and down a one-hundred-yard field in under a unit, and Yuto suspected the instructor knew this. Yuto knew he'd be called on, not only because he was at the front of the line but also because the instructor wasn't fond of him because of his indifferent attitude towards the instructor's explanations.

"Suzuki, step forward," the instructor said sternly.

Yuto sighed, taking a step forward and positioning himself in front of a boulder, hearing the instructor calling forward a few others.

Yuto had already said goodbye to those contribution points. He'd fail this task, and he wouldn't make the top five; he simply didn't have the body or strength to complete the task.

The chunin pulled out a stopwatch from his pocket.

"Alright, you can begin... now!" he said, starting the timer on the watch with a click.

Yuto began pushing the boulder as he glanced at his fellow genin, as he noticed he was already being outpaced and left in the dust. He'd barely moved his boulder a few inches, and sweat already rolled down his pale skin, dripping onto the terrain from his chin. he gritted his teeth, pushing his weak arms to the brink as the boulder moved another inch. he tried using his chakra to strengthen his muscles, but he barely had any muscles to strengthen. He pushed and pushed, not even getting the chance to turn around. He'd been so intrigued by the boulder, fixated on making it move just another few inches, that he didn't notice the genin behind him snickering.

He had just reached halfway through his attempt to cover the first distance when the timer rang. His face fell, looking to his side, seeing that his fellow genin were on their second trip back. While it made him feel less embarrassed that no one actually completed it in time, his performance was still the worst out of everyone.

He walked back, ashamed despite his calm expression on the outside. He figured that if he acted like he didn't care, it wouldn't look as bad. he locked eyes with the disappointed eyes of the chunin instructor.

"fuck my life," he murmured under his breath.

Walking to where the rest of the genin were, ignoring the murmurs and whispers, and snickers. He didn't care; he could whoop everyone's ass here despite his weak body. One gunpowdered spitball and a spark, and they'd look like roasted barbecue, at least that's what he told himself. In truth, hearing the mocking and laughing made his blood boil. It reminded him of when he was back in high school in his previous life.

Yuto plopped on the ground, criss-cross apple sause, pulling a scroll from his pouch and unsealing a paper fan in a poof of smoke, catching the attention of the chunin instructor who was delivering kicks to the boulders to put them back in place. Yuto frowned, seeing that the instructor had to use a significantly smaller amount of force for his boulder. He pretended to look unbothered, fanning his pale skin. He never liked the heat, not even in his previous life. He'd always been a stay inside and play video games teenager, but in this world, he was forced to occupy his time with reading medical scrolls and fuinjutsu theory.

The instructor arrived back from putting the boulders in place, looking at Yuto with contempt as he couldn't help but feel angered by Yuto's relaxed and unbothered mood despite putting on a show of embarrassment just a few moments ago.

"You have some nerve fanning yourself, after barely pushing the boulder halfway," the instructor said with a huff.

Yuto looked up, raising an eyebrow.

"I have another one, if the heat is bothering you," Yuto said innocently.

The instructor scoffed and turned away, pulling out his stopwatch.

"Next!" he said.

Yuto was sipping on a beverage of lemonade with a straw without a care in the world, ignoring the odd looks he was receiving. The people around him didn't matter. He was here to improve his skills and nothing else. he knew it would get quite lonely without friends to keep him company. He figured he would have roommates, as he could tell by the size of the facility that it wasn't quite enough to hold over one thousand kids.

Yuto was about to take a sip of lemonade, but stopped seeing that the blond-haired boy finished before the timer rang, as his indifferent face quickly changed to a frown.

The instructor noticed this, hiding a grin, he really didn't like Yuto.

The instructor wrote a few things down on his clipboard as he looked, seeing the blacked haired boy with goggles also passed before the time limit.

"Hum, looks like we have some talent in this batch," the instructor thought.

Yuto was livid. On the other hand, the grip on his cup of lemonade tightened as the liquid began to drip on his clothes.

Yuto noticed this, loosening his grip as his face broke into uncontrolled anger. He then heard the genin behind him say something.

"he's probably going to be the dead-last of this bunch. I mean, look at him, fanning himself and drinking a beverage. This guy can't be a real shinobi," a boy mouthed off to his friends.

Yuto glanced backward, hearing the genin's comment.

The genin saw this as he began to speak. "Yeah, I said it," the boy said arrogantly.

Yuto clenched his fist, standing up. The instructor glanced at Yuto, locking eyes with him.

Yuto sighed and picked up his beverage off the ground, and walked away to sit somewhere else.

"Why is he flaunting that sword on his back! I bet he doesn't even know how to use it," one of the genins' friends said.

Yuto walked away, ignoring the comments about him, and took a seat on the ground somewhere else. He wanted to teach that brat a lesson, but he knew it wouldn't do anything but make things worse. He knew he'd do better in the other task, but he couldn't shake the feeling of anger he felt, despite his calm expression. He knew his grandfather wouldn't approve of the way he was acting right now. he took a deep breath and settled for unsealing one of his medical scrolls. He could use something to distract himself from the previous fiasco.

After a while, the instructor clapped his hands, seeing that everyone had already attempted the test.

He clapped his hands together, making a loud smack, grabbing the attention of the bickering genin.

"Session one is over. Report to your living quarters,"

"If you kept your blue building pass, you'll notice it's actually a small envelope that holds your living quarters information and your schedule," the instructor explained.

The genin seemed not to pick up on this, as there were surprised murmurs and paper noises.

Yuto pulled the small paper out of the blue envelope and looked at his coordinates before tucking it into his combat pants.

"Oh, and one more thing! The facility management is not lenient and will punish those who can't play nice," the instructor said.

"Report to the inside grounds at eight AM."

"That's all!" he said before walking away.
