Chapter 2 - 2

Maya's mind raced as she entered the office, the sleek, modern space a stark contrast to the intimate atmosphere of the Velvet Lounge. Her boss, Mr. Harding, a man whose ambition outweighed his integrity, paced anxiously in front of a whiteboard covered in figures and charts. "What took you so long?" he snapped, barely acknowledging her presence. "The Zurich deal is on the verge of collapse. Our investors are pulling out."

Maya quickly assessed the situation. The deal, a high-stakes merger that would solidify the company's position in the global market, was indeed in jeopardy. She spent the next few hours working tirelessly, her sharp mind dissecting the complex financial data, identifying the weaknesses, and crafting a new strategy. As dawn approached, she managed to salvage the deal, convincing the investors to stay on board with a series of calculated concessions.

Exhausted but relieved, Maya finally leaned back in her chair, the city skyline painting a pale glow on her face. Mr. Harding clapped her on the shoulder, his smile radiating insincerity. "You saved us, Maya," he said, his voice dripping with false gratitude. "You're a true asset to this company." As he walked away, Maya couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss. The situation had been too close, too orchestrated. It was as if someone had deliberately sabotaged the deal, only to have her swoop in and save the day, solidifying her loyalty to the company. The text message from the unknown number echoed in her mind: "He's not who you think he is."

Driven by a gnawing suspicion, Maya decided to investigate. She started by discreetly reviewing the financial records, searching for any irregularities or hidden transactions. Days turned into sleepless nights as she delved deeper into the company's affairs, uncovering a web of shady dealings and secret accounts. The evidence pointed to one person: Mr. Harding. He was using the Zurich deal as a cover to siphon funds into offshore accounts, planning to make a fortune at the expense of the company and its investors. The realization hit Maya like a punch to the gut. She had been manipulated, used as a pawn in Harding's elaborate scheme. But who had sent her the warning? And why? As she pieced together the puzzle, she realized that the answer might be closer than she thought. It was time to revisit the Velvet Lounge and see if Ethan knew more than he was letting on.

Back at the Velvet Lounge, Maya found Ethan polishing glasses behind the bar, his movements as smooth and practiced as a seasoned performer. "Ethan, we need to talk," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "About Harding. About the Zurich deal."

Ethan's eyes flickered with a hint of surprise, but he quickly regained his composure. "I don't know what you're talking about, Maya," he said, his voice guarded. "I'm just a bartender."

"Don't play coy with me, Ethan," Maya pressed, her gaze unwavering. "I know you know something. That text message...it was you, wasn't it?" Ethan hesitated, his silence confirming her suspicions. "Why, Ethan? Why warn me?"

Ethan sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. "Because I used to work for Harding," he confessed, his voice laced with bitterness. "I saw what he was capable of. I couldn't let him do it again." He revealed that he had been an accountant at Harding's previous company, where he had witnessed similar fraudulent activities. When he tried to expose Harding, he was silenced and blacklisted, forcing him to take on a new identity and disappear. The Velvet Lounge was his refuge, a place to lay low and observe Harding's dealings from afar. He had sent the text message hoping to prevent Maya from becoming another victim.

Armed with Ethan's information, Maya knew she had to act fast. Harding was planning to finalize the transfer of funds within the next 24 hours. She couldn't go to the authorities without concrete evidence, as Harding was too powerful and well-connected. She needed to find a way to expose him publicly, to reveal his true nature to the world. She decided to use her own skills against him, turning his game of manipulation and deception back on him.
