Chapter 4 - The golden books

Solstice thought back to last night when she was in her cozy bed, the moonlight trickling through her window, casting soft shadows in her room. As she looked around at her posters of art with stars and galaxies, she felt a sudden jolt. There was something she had forgotten. Panic flooded her mind as she realized it was the special book her grandmother had given her. The memory rushed back. Her grandmother had told her that the book held ancient secrets just before the shadow appeared, but she hadn't believed her at the time. Now it seemed important.

With a start, she jumped out of bed. Her heart raced as she dashed down the long wooden staircase. The sound of her feet echoed in the quiet house. She reached the front door, flinging it open and running out into the cool night air. Her car stood silently in the driveway, the moonlight glinting off its surface. She quickly opened the passenger door and looked inside. There it was! The book lay on the seat, just as she had left it.

Breathing a sigh of relief, Solstice reached out and took the book in her hands. It felt warm, almost pulsing with energy. She hurried back into the house and up the stairs, careful not to drop it. Back in her room, she closed the door, feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders. She placed the book gently on her bed and stared at it for a moment.

What secrets do you holSheshe thought, curiosity gnawing at her. Her grandmother had said it was a gift, one that could change everything. With a deep breath, Solstice decided she had to open it. She hesitated for a moment, feeling a strange energy in the air, then pulled back the cover.

As soon as she opened the book, a bright rainbow light erupted from within its pages. The vibrant colors swirled around her, filling her room with warmth. Solstice felt a surge of energy rise from her stomach and flow through her body. Before she knew it, she was floating a few inches above her bed.

Suddenly, ancient words began echoing in her mind. They were in a language she did not understand, yet felt familiar. Images flashed in her mind—images of the sun rising and setting, rivers flowing, storms raging, and trees shifting with the wind. It was knowledge pouring into her, filling the empty spaces of her mind. She could feel the power of the elements awakening inside her.

"It's real!"

"Let's discover what this book can really do," Solstice thought, her adventurous spirit ignited. She sat on the floor, the book open, as different runes filled the pages. As she began to read the ancient tongue, more colorful lights danced in the air, shifting and swirling around her as the center of this magical phenomenon.

Hours disappeared as she learn to harness her powers and control the elements of the world. She practiced simple spells, calling on water to splash at her feet and summoning little gusts of wind. The air around her buzzed with potential, the secrets of the book intertwining with her spirit.

But as the night wore on, Solstice felt a shadow creeping into her heart. What if she were not meant to have these powers? What if they were being watched? The more she discovered, the greater the danger. That was the last thought in her mind as she decided she must go back to her grandmother's house. She cast the first spell she learned, which was to put the book into her consciousness for safety. Then she climbed into bed, facing the morning to come with confidence. Solstice's sleepy thoughts were that with this new power, she could protect herself from the shadowy thing that took her grandmother.

Flash forward to the dusty attic filled with old furniture, cobwebs, and the faint scent of aged paper. Sunlight filters through a small window, illuminating Solstice's determined face as she stands before a towering bookshelf.

She mutters to herself, "Okay, focus. The golden book is important, but what about this other one? Why is it stuck?"

She pushes against the spine of the golden book, feeling the wood of the shelf creak beneath her fingers. Suddenly, she notices a small lever hidden behind a loose board. With a quick flick, the bookshelf shudders, revealing a hidden compartment.

"A secret compartment? This just keeps getting better!"

Inside, she finds an ancient map adorned with intricate runes, glowing faintly in the dim light. Next to it lies a letter, its parchment aged and brittle. As she touches it, the runes ignite, flames dancing across the surface without consuming it.

Solstice eyes wide "What the—? This is incredible!"

The flames settle, revealing a message in the ancient language she had learned from the golden book.

Solstice read aloud, "Trust Leo Halliwell with the map and where you find him…"

Her heart races as she recalls the name. Leo Halliwell was the enigmatic figure she had heard whispers about in her grandmother's stories—a guardian of secrets, a keeper of knowledge.

Solstice worriedly said, "But where do I find him? And why should I trust him?"

She tucks the letter into her pocket, glancing back at the other golden book she had opened earlier. The weight of her grandmother's messages presses on her mind.

As the sun sets outside, casting a warm glow over the attic, Solstice realizes that her journey is just beginning, and the secrets of the golden books are about to unfold in ways she never imagined.
