Chapter 43 - Patchwork Maze

"Ouch.."

Elena hissed as her companion fell over her and pressed into her side. Her side burned with awful pain from the wound her hurried summoning of her memory dagger had given her. The wound was not deep so it shouldn't take too long to heal up to her luck. She had dismissed it as soon as he had lifted the piece of rubble that was pinning her down from off of her.

'That was close.'

Luckily she had been able to summon the [Lacerating Thorn] to serve as post to keep the rubble from completely flattening her. Its pommel had dug into the chunk of rubble while its blade stuck into the ground forming a makeshift post. If not for her attribute [Elastic] that made her body unnaturally flexible and malleable and her quick thinking she would have been crushed to death.

'Who would have thought that the attribute I hated for so long would save my life.'

She grunted while pushing him off of her and laying him on the ground. The sight before her was quite grizzly. Her partner had somehow managed to slay the nightmare creature on his own and survive despite being a normal sleeper…no he wasn't a normal sleeper, his aspect made him a dangerous wildcard. His body was a myriad of gaping wounds covering his arms, side, chest, and stomach. He was covered in so much blood that it was hard to even spot them all. His memory armor had been thoroughly shredded as well and soon dismissed itself as he fell unconscious…well at least she hoped he was unconscious. His wounds should have been fatal and yet by some miracle he had not bled out yet judging from the labored rise and fall of his chest to signify his breathing.

Elena's legacy training kicked in quickly compelling her to summon the [Tailor's Choice] as a ball of thread paired with a slender dull-grey needle formed in her hand. She moved with deft precision as she began easily piercing his skin and closing his wounds. The string of her memory had the ability to slow blood flow considerably when embedded in skin while the needle could pierce nearly anything making sowing with it as dangerous as it was smooth.

She began on his arms where the worst of it was. His lean arms were covered in gruesome cuts left by nasty claws with many of them being as deep as his bone exposing his radius and ulna bones. She summoned the [Chilled Respite] and washed away the caked and heavy blood to clean the wounds secretly wishing he was awake to summon his strange healing memory. Getting an infection was unheard of for an awakened but as mere sleepers it was a possible and utterly deadly threat in a place like this since their bodies were not yet superhuman.

Elena had seen a lot of gruesome cuts and scars in her days at Ravenheart were she often encountered awakened who were injured while studying first aid as a part of her legacy training and yet the sight of her partners arms still made her squeamish. That was unfitting of a legacy though so she cast those feelings aside. If she did not hurry he was going to die. Blood continued seeping from his wounds like a scarlet timer. She had less than a minute at most to stop the bleeding.

Sweat covered her brow as her own wound ached. The pain felt numb to her as all of her focus was on her stitching. Blood flowed from his wounds quickly as she closed yet another cut before cleaning off several more that had already filled with blood again. She wouldn't have enough time to finish patching him up before he would die and so she didn't.

Instead she began making small loops of thread in his skin before tying them off and cutting it with her dagger before moving to the next spot. Just like this she was able to slow down the bleeding. Each knot slowed the bleeding considerably utilizing the [Tailor's Choice]'s enchantment until it outright stopped altogether. She finished stopping the bleeding on his arms and moved to his side where the cuts were all parallel and of similar depth. The linear nature of these made them much easier to fix than the erratic maze of lesions on his arms and she deduced they must have all come from the same attack.

"How on earth is he alive?"

She quickly finished stopping the bleeding on his side before moving back to his arms. Even if she had stopped the bleeding she couldn't rest until she had fully patched him up. Like a trained doctor she expertly began suturing his wounds. They were quite visible without his armor memory; however she did have to move and flip him over to reach some of the cuts; however, since he wasn't awake to feel it, she didn't have to worry about him screaming and protesting in pain.

'Almost there…'

And with a final pop she finished her final stitch as her needle emerged from his pale skin carrying with it a faint trace of red blood. She sighed with relief while looking at her handiwork. Right now her comrade looked more like a toy that had been torn to ribbons then stitched together than a person. He was lucky to have fallen unconscious since enduring such ruthless and efficient stitching while conscious would have made any normal person scream in awful pain. She gazed at his pitiful frame.

'How humiliating…'

She had her life saved by a non-legacy sleeper while she, a daughter of Ki Song, had been pinned under rubble and at the mercy of a nightmare creature. If it hadn't been for his miraculous victory they would both be dead right now.

It was truly a humbling and eye opening experience. The dream realm truly was full of unimaginable horrors. Had she been unprepared? Now that wasn't it. She had been extremely thorough in scouting around their shelter and yet even then she had failed to notice the presence of a nightmare creature until it was too late. This ruined city was a hellscape like no other. They could not even travel away from their shelter without instantly being attacked by a nightmare creature. Perhaps they had been too cautious… Luckily this one happened to be an awakened one but if it was a fallen one they would have surely died. Her side ached as she brooded, reminding her of her own wounds.

She was battered all over yet none of it was comparable to what her companion had gone through. At least there was a small bright side to this, since he had defeated it that must mean that they now had something to eat. Elena tried to use this thought to alleviate the growing dread of what she was about to do. Grabbing her water skin memory from the ground she dismissed the top of her memory completely and poured the cold water on her wound. She hissed as the cold water washed away the fresh blood before finding a piece of splintered wood to clamp her teeth down on nearby on the ground. Sanitation was not her priority right now since despite the fact her wound was not as life threatening as his it was still dangerous to leave it unattended for too long. Distracting herself with the thought of filling her stomach she pinched the skin of her side before plunging a needle into it.
