I walked out of Seraphina's room and the door closed behind me with a soft sound.

I stood there for a second, staring at the wood panel like maybe—maybe she would open it again. Maybe she would let me say something else. Anything else.

But she didn't.

I dragged my hands over my face and tried to breathe normally, but there was a sharp pull in my chest that refused to ease.

How could I look her in the eye again?

How could I have said those things to her?

She was the only innocent person in this entire palace.

She was the only one who had never used power to harm anyone.

You're not the only person who has had to deal with grief. But how would you know? How would you understand that? You've been living the perfect princess fantasy all your life.

In the heat of the moment, I had said those words. I know that I shouldn't have but that was the thing about situations like this.

Usually before you take the words back, they've already left your mouth.
