Chapter 2 - 1.2

Part 2: Family Bonds and Jealous Rivalries

Soon, a table of delicious dishes was set.

Lu Fei had made several side dishes and a plate of fish with pickled vegetables.

"Alright, let's eat. Don't stand on ceremony, Kyle."

Anna, like the mistress of the house, smiled as she spoke.

"Great let me taste little brother Lu Fei's cooking!"

"The 'little brother' part is unnecessary. Eat and go quickly don't interfere with my reunion with Sister Anna!"

Lu Fei replied sourly.

"Xiao Fei, don't be so rude!"

Anna immediately spoke sternly.

"Hmph~"

Lu Fei snorted. Apologizing was out of the question.

"It's okay. I understand how little brother Lu Fei feels. After all, I once had a sister too now I can't see her at all. Thinking about it, I still feel reluctant."

Kyle smiled and waved it off.

"Oh? Where is your sister now?"

"She got married."

Kyle shrugged and continued: "Married to a noble lord, even. Though only as a concubine, it was thanks to her that my father could become the level 5 adventurer he is now."

Hearing this, Anna unconsciously clenched her fists a flicker of struggle passing through her eyes.

Kyle spoke meaningfully, then began enjoying the food, saying no more.

After finishing the meal, he promptly took his leave.

Watching his back, Lu Fei curled his lip. "He's good at reading the mood knew I didn't welcome him, so he left quickly."

Anna rolled her eyes at him, then reached out, pinching his ear.

"Overthinking again? Don't tell me you think I'm dating him? He has a girlfriend."

"Ow easy!"

Lu Fei yelped theatrically, then pouted: "So what if he has a girlfriend? Didn't you hear what he just said?"

"He said his sister married a noble lord as a concubine he was hinting at you, right? Sister Anna, did some noble lord take a fancy to you?"

Anna looked at him in surprise.

She bit her lip and sighed.

"If I said yes?"

"Then I'll take that noble down. No one gets to take Sister Anna away from me! If someone tries, they can step over my corpse!"

"Shut up, silly."

Anna's eyes moistened slightly; she vigorously rubbed his hair and said in a low voice: "Don't talk about death. Sister won't leave you so don't indulge in wild thoughts."

In Anna's heart, only Lu Fei truly cared about her.

As for other suitors, they were just comrades on the same adventure, all in it for money.

She'd seen those who stabbed others in the back to monopolize rewards.

As for Kyle and Uncle Kate…

Anna sighed.

Perhaps she should take Lu Fei away.

Being targeted by a noble was troublesome.

She wasn't afraid for herself, but worried that Lu Fei, who had no mana and was an ordinary person, would be harmed.

That she could not allow.

When Lu Fei finished making breakfast, Anna, dressed neatly and washed, sat at the table.

"Good morning, Sister Anna. Today's breakfast is fragrant steamed buns."

Because he had been a foodie in his past life, Lu Fei could easily recreate various delicacies.

Anna's taste had been spoiled by him.

So Kyle's attempt to conquer her taste buds with high-grade seasonings had failed outright.

"Wow, that smells so good. What's the filling?"

Anna's eyes lit up with delight.

In Uncle Kate's adventurer party where could be more comfortable than home?

And Lu Fei could make so many delicious things.

If not for the need to raise her adventurer rank and earn money, Anna had even thought of staying home forever.

But that wouldn't do.

Father was gone.

She had to carry this family.

Lu Fei had no mana she had to protect him.

"Rabbit meat. A few days ago, I ran into some dumb rabbits that crashed into stones and knocked themselves out so I brought them back and marinated them."

"See? Not bad, right?"

"The taste is good, but I find it hard to believe horned rabbits would just crash into a stone right in front of you."

Anna rolled her eyes at him. He was babbling again.

Horned rabbits were magical beasts, after all.

Shameful to say

Her father had been attacked and killed by a horned rabbit that pierced his chest.

"Haha, I knew I couldn't fool you, Sister Anna. Actually, I took them down with magic!"

Lu Fei blurted out what was on his mind.

Anna sighed deeply.

She knew Lu Fei had no mana at most he knew some swordsmanship.

But she was his family, someone he relied on, so she wouldn't say the harsh words others in the village would exposing his lack of mana.

"Xiao Fei, don't worry. In a few days, I'll take you to the adventurers' guild."

"Even if you have no mana, I heard a certain knight guard has a method to enhance the body and grant temporary mana."

"When the time comes, I'll take you to try it."

She said this as though making a firm decision, her face turning a little pale.

Clearly this decision weighed heavily on her.

"There's such a method? Sister Anna aren't you being deceived?"

Lu Fei looked doubtful.

Turning a muggle into an extraordinary professional who could use mana was harder than ascending to the heavens.

If such a method existed, it would be extremely dangerous likely squeezing potential and shortening lifespan.

"Don't worry, I won't lie to you. I saw someone tested it really turned a muggle into a magic user."

Anna vowed confidently.

"But, sister, I do have mana. Look."

Lu Fei didn't want her to take risks for him. He condensed a multicolored mana orb before her eyes.

However, Anna's eyes moistened as she reached out to hug him, gaze firm: "Xiao Fei, don't worry. Sister will make sure you become an adventurer with mana!"

"This…"

Lu Fei's mouth fell open.

What was going on?

Could Sister not see the multicolored mana?

He decided to test it.

"Sister, can't you see anything in my hand?"

"Silly, there's nothing in your hand. Do you want mana so badly you're hallucinating? Don't worry, Xiao Fei trust sister. Sister will make your wish come true."

Lu Fei: "…"

No way.

She really couldn't see his mana orb?

Lu Fei felt a bit muddled.

Feeling her softness and that fresh fragrance, Lu Fei snuggled closer.

Since Sister Anna couldn't see it, he'd better not tell her for now lest she be frightened.

Moreover

Listening to Sister Anna talk about turning a muggle into an extraordinary being he instinctively felt there was a conspiracy.

He and Sister Anna seemed shrouded by the shadow of an unseen hand.

Sister Anna had said something about a certain knight…

Speaking of knights, only the imperial royal family and noble lords were qualified to form knightly orders.

Therefore, was it some noble targeting him and Sister Anna?

Watching the now-quiet Lu Fei, Anna became even more determined.

No matter what

She had to let Little Fei get mana first.

At worst, she'd deceive that noble and flee with Little Fei.

They'd run to a deserted place and cultivate slowly.

She didn't know why

She just had confidence in Lu Fei.

She felt that if Lu Fei had mana, he must already have become a level 4, even level 5 adventurer.

Originally, this time she had wanted to advance to level 4 through Uncle Kate's party.

But unexpectedly, Uncle Kate didn't take a mission to subjugate level 4 magical beasts; instead, it was an escort mission for noble goods.

Anna wasn't a fool.

She immediately understood Uncle Kate's thinking.

Other than her, three people on the team had reached the adventurer experience cap.

And those three, like her, planned to leave after advancing to go solo or form a trio.

There was no help for it Uncle Kate was too stingy.

Each mission reward, he took six shares, one went to logistics his son, Kyle.

The remaining three shares were split among the rest of the party.

Such stinginess, squeezing others who could stand it?

If Anna had a backing and stronger power, she wouldn't want to work for Kate either.

So, in short

Kate didn't want to create competitors.

Without signing a contract to stay in his team, he wouldn't let them easily advance to level 4.

Thinking of the adventurer party, Anna's expression darkened.

Truly vexing.

Kyle had even tried to pursue her asking her to be his mistress.

Yesterday he'd come to speak on the noble's behalf trying to persuade her to become the noble's concubine.

They were treating her like goods.

By contrast, Anna realized that the one truly good to her, who had her in his heart seemed to be Lu Fei.

So.

Little Fei, wait for me I'll make sure you gain mana.

"Knock knock Anna, are you there?"

While she was thinking, Kyle's voice came from the door.

"I'm here to inform you. The captain took a new mission urgent gather before afternoon."

"I know. I'll be there."

Anna answered casually, then smiled at Lu Fei.

"Xiao Fei, get ready. Come to the adventurers' guild with me!"

"Okay!"
