Chapter 30 - Chapter 30 - Shiny Nidorino

William and Loko facing each other with their pokemons, Nidoran and Growlithe in the center of the field.

"Growlithe, Ember!"

Flames burst forward in a scattered spray, and William shouted, "Nidoran, dodge left and counter with Poison Sting!"

Nidoran darted aside, the fire singeing the edge of his horn, then fired a volley of shimmering purple needles. Growlithe yelped as they struck, purple sparks flickering over its fur.

"Good! Now Double Kick!"

Nidoran surged forward with one kick, two! Growlithe stumbled back, digging its claws into the dirt and took the stable stance.

"Growlithe uses Fire Fang!"

Growlithe lunged, teeth burning with fire, clamping down on Nidoran's shoulder. The impact sent sparks flying and William's heart skipped a beat but immediately calmed down because he can feel the fighting spirit radiates from him.

"Nidoran, hang in there! Use Horn Attack!"

Growlithe tried to hold on, but Nidoran's horn flared with pale light. He thrust upward and the blow landing squarely under Growlithe's chin, sending it tumbling backward with a pained bark.

Dust rose around the areas. For a moment, both Pokémon stood still, panting hard.

Then suddenly Nidoran's body began to glow with intense energy.

William froze. "Wait… is that....? Nice timing."

Light enveloped the small Pokémon, bright and swirling. His silhouette stretched, horn lengthening, limbs growing more defined. His voice deepened into a determined growl.

When the glow faded, Nidorino stood tall with his eyes sharper, body sleek and strong, his horn radiating faint energy.

William smiled slowly. "You did it, buddy."

"Rino!" he growled proudly.

Trainer Loko blinked, then laughed, rubbing his neck. "Man, evolving during a match, huh? That's awesome! Let's finish strong! Growlithe, Flame Wheel! Uses full strength."

Growlithe spun forward in a fiery charge.

William grinned. "Nidorino, counter with Poison Jab!"

Purple energy gathered at Nidorino's horn as he lunged forward. The two attacks collided which is fire against venom and the explosion of light sending both Pokémon skidding backward with strong force.

When the smoke cleared, Growlithe lay on its side, fainted.

Nidorino stood, panting but victorious, his horn still sparking faintly and his body is filled with injuries.

William smiled proudly. "Good work, partner. You did well." And then he recalled Nidorino who is very tired from the battle back to his PokeBall.

Loko also recalled his Growlithe, still smiling. "Nice one! But I've got one more left. Go, Butterfree!"

The butterfly Pokémon fluttered gracefully above the field, wings scattering powdery light and flying gracefully.

William considered his choice and sent out his pokemon. "Let's go with… Chikorita."

"Chi-ka!" The little grass Pokémon hopped forward, eager to prove herself.

Butterfree began circling, its compound eyes flashing. Loko commands his pokemon "Butterfree, use Confusion!"

A ripple of psychic energy slammed forward, lifting Chikorita off the ground.

"Hang on there! Don't panic. Trust me and follow my command." William called. "Use your vines to anchor yourself!"

Chikorita shot her vines into the dirt, pulling herself down with a determined cry. "Chikaaa!"

"Now uses Razor Leaf!"

She spun, releasing a flurry of glowing leaves upward. The blades sliced through the air, cutting through Butterfree's dust cloud.

"Counter with Gust!"

Butterfree flapped hard, scattering the leaves and forcing Chikorita back to her position.

"Chikorita, Sweet Scent and then Tackle!"

A soft, pink mist spread across the field, momentarily confusing Butterfree's aim and senses. Chikorita dashed forward through it and slammed into the bug midair, sending it spiraling down.

Butterfree tried to recover, but one more Razor Leaf sealed it fate and the Pokémon crashed gently into the grass, defeated.

Loko recalled his Butterfree and smiled wide. "Man, you're strong! And your Pokémon really trust you. Thanks for the battle. I will train very hard to win back against you and your pokemons."

William nodded with an easy smile. "You too. That was a good match. If you really want to win against me next time we meet, you need to train really hard. After all, I am not stopping here and let you beat me very easily."

After the Battle, the sun had begun to dip low, casting long golden rays through the trees. The team rested by a small lake, watching ripples shimmer on the surface.

Chikorita was proudly showing off to Nidorino, who seemed half-amused by her endless chatter. Meanwhile, Eevee sat by William's side, pretending not to notice Chikorita while clearly not ignoring her.

William unwrapped some berry made snacks and handed them out. "Good battles today, everyone."

"Vee," Eevee said softly, nuzzling his hand again.

Chikorita's eyes narrowed. She hopped closer, bumping Eevee aside and curling against William's leg instead.

"Chika!" she huffed.

Eevee flicked her tail across Chikorita's face and grinned smugly. "Eevee-vee~."

Chikorita screeched softly and puffed up, shaking her leaf like a little flag of war.

William blinked. "Oh no… not again—"

Kirlia sat beside a rock, sipping Oran juice from a bottle with the weary patience of a babysitter.

They're competing again, she relayed dryly.

Electabuzz laughed openly this time, sparks flicking in rhythm with his chuckles.

"Buzz! Buzz-buzz-buzz!"

Leafeon sighed, laying her head on her paws. Ivysaur simply continued eating his berry stew, pretending this wasn't happening.

William finally sighed and separated the two. "Alright, you two, enough. You're both great, okay? Eevee's been with me for a while, and Chikorita's new and there's no need to fight. I like all of you equally."

The two grass-and-normal Pokémon looked away in opposite directions, both grumbling softly, their tails and leaf twitching like synchronized frustration.

But then, after a few quiet moments, Eevee glanced at Chikorita and dropped a small berry in front of her.

"Vee," she said softly.

Chikorita blinked, hesitated, then accepted it shyly. "Chi…."

William smiled. "There we go. Progress."

The evening breeze rustled through the grass, carrying the faint scent of Oran blossoms. Fireflies began to flicker along the edge of the lake.

William leaned back against a tree, his Pokémon gathered around him.

The world was calm again for now.

Tomorrow, they'd enter Saffron City, the psychic capital of Kanto. But tonight was theirs with a moment of laughter, teasing, and new bonds forming under the fading light.

Eevee rested against William's arm, eyes half-closed. Chikorita nestled near his side, her leaf swaying gently with his breathing.

And across the lake, the stars began to twinkle along the small lights on the long road ahead.
