One small square of black chalk, drawn hard, sat at the back of the sixth ring on the workshop wall, a little east of Huifu's valley and a little north. Amaya's valley. Two hundred and fourteen children and a building against the hill that smelled of nothing.
The other five rings had no square. Not yet. Jayde had stood in front of the wall long enough on the first inside morning to see that the empty backs of five rings were not five answers but five questions, and that every plan she made before Grindday would be built on the one she could see and four she could only guess at, and made it anyway. There was nothing else to make it on.
"It is the same breath, or it is nothing," she said. "So we start with the breath."
