Pokémon, mysterious beings that have existed for so long, stand alongside humanity. People view them as pets, some use them for action, but no one can deny the bond between humans and Pokémon. Whether you are a baby or an old man, Pokémon will always be there by your side.
Pallet Town is a small town in the Kanto region.
In an average room of a small home, a young boy with brown hair and blue eyes opens his eyes to the sound of an alarm clock ringing. He clicks the snooze button as he opens his eyes, rubs them, and then lets out a yawn of sleepiness still remaining.
But upon realizing what today is, he couldn't help but smile excitedly. He immediately hopped out of bed and changed from his pajamas into clothing meant for his first day. The day of becoming a Pokémon trainer. Getting his licence and his first-ever Pokémon!
The day he will set out from home and become the very best like no one ever was! Travel all over the region, battle all eight gym leaders! Enter the Pokémon League and become the League Champion!
After putting on a black shirt, white sweater, blue jeans, and green shoes, he opened the door to his room and exited with a huge amount of excitement. He hurried downstairs as he was greeted by his father.
"Hey, Sport! Today is a big day isn't it?"
A tall man with brown hair and brown eyes in simple clothing greeted his son. He ruffles his hair as the young boy smacks it away in a playful manner.
"Yes! Yes, it is, Dad! Did Mom already leave for work?"
"Yep, she already left. The Viridian Pokémon Center needs its Nurse Joy. She told me it hurt her not to be there to see you off when you get your first Pokémon. But she will be there once you reach Viridian City, possibly in a day or two for her to tell you how proud she is. She did make your special breakfast and love before she left so make sure to have enough energy."
His mother, one of the many Nurse Joys, with so many sisters and cousins that Kris views as one big family.
He nodded at his father's words as he sat down at the table and ate along with him as he was quick in eating. His father laughs as he calms his son down.
"Kris, I doubt Professor Oak will let you go off on your journey without a Pokémon. You don't have to rush."
The young boy getting his first Pokémon today is named Kris.
But that didn't calm Kris down as he ate his whole breakfast with no sweat. He smiled sheepishly as he rubbed his head a bit embarrassed.
"Sorry, Dad, it's just that I'm way too excited!"
"Haha! Can't blame you kiddo! I was also excited when I got my first Pokémon. Right, Leafeon?"
A cat-like Pokémon with leaves on its ear and tail, who was sitting enjoying her morning nap, looked up at the sound of her trainer's question as she nodded happily before napping again. Kris smiles at the Pokémon as he remembers seeing pictures that it was once a cute Eevee.
He wondered if he could get his own Eevee and evolve it to a Leafeon one day like his father. But he wouldn't mind having it evolve into something else like Flareon, Espeon, or maybe even Glaceon.
So after exchanging heartwarming conversations between father and son, the two hugged while hugging Leafeon as she sensed her playmate departing before leaving the house Kris spent his ten lifelong years in before running to a special building in Pallet Town.
A home with a windmill is unique among all homes in Pallet. Kris ran up the stairs before slowing down at the front door. He did not wish to slam the door open and disturb the professor who could be researching Pokémon right now, so he calmed himself down, prepared himself, and opened the door with a huge smile still on his face.
Kris walks around for a moment before being greeted by an old man in a white lab coat. He smiles warmly at the boy in front of him, already knowing why he is here. He is Professor Oak, the very Pokémon Professor who is famous across the world, the inventor of the Pokedex.
"Good morning Kris! Already here to receive your first Pokémon?"
"Professor! Good morning! Yes, I'm here to begin my Pokémon journey with my very first Pokémon! Can I see them!"
Professor Oak gives Kris an amused smile before guiding him to a lab where an electric pillar stands in the middle of the room. Upon getting close, the pillar opens from the inside as it reveals three Poké Balls. Each has its own type symbol.
A symbol of a fire Pokémon.
A leaf symbol of a grass Pokémon.
And a water drop symbol of a water Pokémon.
Kris already knew who the Pokémon were inside the three Poké Balls. The professor even spoke about that last night on TV for the new trainers departing on their Pokémon journey.
Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. The three Kanto starters for beginner trainers are sponsored by the professor himself. The professor has sponsored Kris, Ash, Gary, and another guy who apparently is from another town, to be Pokémon trainers.
"I will say this first, Kris, Charmander has already been pre-picked by another trainer named Damian. As well as being here earlier this morning to get his Pokedex and Poké Balls."
"I see, it's no problem, Professor! I already decided on a Pokémon in case I don't get Charmander."
Two days before this very moment, Kris had been struggling with who to choose to be his starter Pokémon. But yesterday he made up his mind and had other back-ups in case he didn't get his first choice starter.
So with no hesitation, he grabbed the very Pokeball that contains the very Pokemon that will be his lifelong partner and companion for his entire life.
"I choose you, Bulbasaur!"
A small blue-green skin frog with a green bulb on its back and red eyes. It let out a name of itself as it looked around before locking eyes with a boy taller than its size. It stares at Kris with curiosity with a mix of hope.
"So you chose Bulbasaur. A wonderful decision to make. No doubt that Bulbasaur will be in great hands with you as the son of a Nurse Joy."
Kris just smiles as he stares down at the Pokémon he chose. He knelt down to try to match his height as he offered a hand.
"Hi, Bulbasaur. My name is Kris. You and I are going to become great friends!"
Bulbasaur cried out its name in excitement and sent a vine to shake Kris' hand before nuzzling in affection. Kris happily hugs the grass starter as he is happy to be accepted by Bulbasaur.
"Well then, Kris, here is your Pokédex and Poké Balls."
Professor Oak handed Kris a red device, along with six red and white Poké Balls. Kris didn't hesitate as he opened up his Pokedex, and it turned on and showed an image of Kris on the screen.
[Hello, Pokémon trainer Kris. I am Dexter the Pokedex. Any Pokémon you come across on the road, just simply hold your Pokedex in front of the Pokémon, and I'll explain the Pokémon, the type, and anything relating to the Pokémon. I am also an ID, so if you somehow happen to lose your Pokedex, be warned, it cannot be replaced.]
Kris nods at the somewhat male mechanic voice that the Pokédex sounded as he let the Pokédex scan Bulbasaur.
[Bulbasaur, it bears the seed on its back from birth. The seeds slowly developed. Researchers aren't sure whether they classified Bulbasaur as a plant or an animal. Bulbasaur are very tough and are extremely hard to capture in the wild.]
He listens to Bulbasaur's description as he puts away his Pokedex along with his Poké Balls on his belt and he turns to the professor as he thanks him.
"I'll take good care of Bulbasaur, professor."
"You're welcome, Kris. I wish you the best of luck on your journey as a now official Pokémon trainer. Should you ever wish to change Pokémon once you capture more than six Pokémon, give me a call when you get the chance at a Pokémon Center."
"Got it! Bulbasaur return!"
Kris returns Bulbasaur in its Poké Ball as he makes his way out of the lab. As he was doing so, he was focusing on the Poké Ball containing Bulbasaur. So much excitement filled his head as he quickly focused on going down the stairs to avoid tripping over.
Once he reached the gate, he was greeted by a few people who had come to see him off, two of them were his father and Leafeon.
"Everyone! What are you all doing here?"
Kris saw his neighbors, who are friends with his parents, along with a few friends, one of them is Daisy Oak, the granddaughter of Professor Oak.
"Why? Why are we here to see you off of course. Didn't think it would just be Leafeon and me saying goodbye to you?"
Kris didn't answer but instead rushed to hug his father one last time as his dad embraced his son.
"You're going to be an excellent Pokémon trainer. I just know it."
Kris nodded before letting go of the hug as he sent Bulbasaur out of his Poké Ball. Bulbasaur was surprised to see more people than its new trainer but greeted everyone with its name.
"Bulbasaur, huh? Guess it runs in the family to choose a grass-type starter."
"Dad, you started with Eevee, a normal type."
His father laughs before handing him a bag with a Poké Ball symbol on it. Kris realized he had forgotten his bag at home and quietly thanked him for not looking embarrassed.
Daisy walked towards Kris as she handed him the map of the Kanto region.
"This will help you on your journey. I made sure to put in hard work in making this map."
Kris thanked her as he knew that Daisy was a natural when making maps of towns and cities. This very map is one of her best, showing what the whole region looks like. So many details in the routes and such to know exactly where you are.
"Hey… Is Gary here?"
Gary Oak, the grandson of Professor Oak, and Daisy's little brother. While he is an expert when it comes to Pokémon, he is also very arrogant when he brags about his status and flaunts being the very best trainer in the Kanto region. Which was why he and Kris didn't get along, especially since they were friends in the past, along with Ash.
Speaking of Ash, Gary likes to annoy him the most, and Ash just gives him the satisfaction of annoying him. Daisy chuckles a bit before explaining.
"No, he's coming by soon. And since you and that Damian guy have already chosen Bulbasaur and Charmander, he will obviously get his Squirtle. Now that I think about it, Squirtle is the last Pokémon that Grandpa will give out to new trainers. I wonder if he has an extra Pokémon for Ash. But I would be surprised if he got here before Gary."
Kris realized that Ash isn't here yet, nor is Gary. While Gary will get Squirtle, it honestly depends on who will arrive here to get Squirtle.
As for the reason Kris got Bulbasaur, it was because of the type advantage it has against Squirtle, so if he and Gary were to have their first Pokémon trainer battle, then Bulbasaur would obviously win.
Still, he hoped Ash would arrive here before Gary and get Squirtle. If that were to happen, then he would laugh that Gary wouldn't get a Pokémon while Ash has the Pokémon he wants. But Kris does know of Ash's habit of sleeping in late a few years back at summer camp, and such, so the chances of getting a laugh are pretty slim.
He wonders how Serena is doing in the Kalos region. He hopes she's doing well and wonders if she still has a crush on Ash, back when he first helped her during summer camp. He honestly wouldn't be surprised if Ash had already forgotten about her given his nature and such.
So with one last goodbye to everyone, Kris and Bulbasaur head off to Route 1, the beginning route for all new Pokémon trainers.
Kris was looking at the map as he muttered to himself. It's been ten minutes on the road, and Kris still has the energy to keep moving forward.
"Okay, so if we keep on heading straight on the dirt road, we can reach Viridian City in a few hours if we keep going straight. Not sure why Dad said it will take a day or two. Then again, he told me Ash's dad took like four days before he arrived there."
Kris nods to himself before looking at Bulbasaur.
"Okay, Saur! We will battle a few wild Pokémon here for experience. If we want to grow stronger, then we have to start by battling all the Pokémon here. Maybe even capture a few Pokémon on the way."
Bulbasaur nods in determination as it accepts its nickname from its new trainer. Kris also searches Bulbasaur's move set and notices he is male, has the ability Overgrow, and has three moves like Tackle, Growl, and Vine Whip.
So with a little detour, Kris and Bulbasaur went searching in the tall grass, and not two minutes later, they saw a Pokémon Kris knew all too well. Pidgey. But just in case Kris pulls out his Pokedex to scan the bird Pokémon.
[Pidgey is a flying Pokémon. Among all the flying Pokémon, it is the gentlest and easiest to capture, a perfect target for the beginning Pokémon trainer to test his or her Pokémon's skills.]
"The easiest, huh? Yeah, with a type advantage against my grass Pokémon. It probably already knows a flying-type move. Still, Saur, ready to have your first wild Pokémon battle?"
Bulbasaur gives out another determined cry in its name as it is ready for battle.
"Alright then, Saur hit Pidgey with your Tackle!"
Bulbasaur wasted no time as it charged at the Pidgey it tackled the bird with its body and sent Pidgey away from Bulbasaur.
"Hit it with Growl!"
Bulbasaur cried out as it sent givers through Pidgey to not only lower its attack but also to intimidate it from flying away.
While Pidgey did not fly away, it did fly to get away from being hit again, as it began to use a move of its own, as Kris quickly called out.
"Dodge its Gust attack and use Tackle again!"
Bulbasaur quickly dodged the winds that Pidgey had made and tackled the bird again, sending it to the ground. Kris noticed the state Pidgey was in as he prepared a Poké Ball. He throws it at Pidgey as it lands on its head. It became red as it was sent inside the Poké Ball, and it shook a few times.
But after waiting for a moment, the Poké Ball confirmed its capture, and Kris couldn't help but cheer out as he ran to Bulbasaur and embraced it.
"We did Saur! We caught our first Pokémon!"
Bulbasaur cried out in happiness as Kris walked over to Pidgey while holding Bulbasaur as he picked the Poké Ball up. Kris showed it to his starter as he spoke.
"Pidgey is now our friend. So let's treat it as a friend."
Bulbasaur nods as Kris sends it out again but in a white glow. Pidgey looked around for a second before he saw the trainer and the Pokémon that beat and captured him. Kris gently put Bulbasaur on the ground as he took out a potion from his bag. He carefully holds Pidgey as he sprays the medicine on him.
"It might sting, but it will heal you up. You battle well Pid, I'm glad you are my first capture."
Pidgey coos in its name before feeling the sting like its trainer said, but felt the damage it received healing up.
As the son of a Nurse Joy, it is his duty to make sure his Pokémon heal up and rest before continuing on adventuring.
"Okay, that should do it. Let's get you back in your Poké Ball to heal up. Come here Saur, let me take a look at you."
Kris said as he turned Pidgey in its Poké Ball, as Bulbasaur approached him, and he checked on his starter. After a moment, Kris let out a confident smile that Bulbasaur just needs to recharge for a minute or so after using its energy to beat a flying Pokémon. So he returned it to the Poké Ball and headed back to the dirt road.
After that first battle, Kris felt confident that he would do great as a Pokémon trainer. He already got his first capture, Pidgey and Bulbasaur gained experience in battle.
It was five minutes walking through Route 1, when another Pokémon decided to jump out of the tall grass. Kris saw it was the rat Pokémon Rattata. Like a rat, its fur is purple and white with big front teeth.
[A forest Pokémon. Rattata. It likes cheese, nuts, fruits, and berries. It also comes out into open fields to steal food from stupid travelers.]
Kris felt that Dexter would say this to someone who would be stupid to leave a bag with food inside and on the ground. But he also noticed that Route 1 didn't look like a forest or anywhere on the map, so it might have come from Viridian Forest.
"A Rattata… Should I catch it or just battle it? Saur can take on another battle. Come on out and use Vine Whip!"
He sends out Bulbasaur again as it immediately uses vines from its bulb to whack Rattata away. The rat was startled by the sudden attack but quickly prepared for a Tackle of its own.
"Saur, use Vine Whip again but hold it down and use your own Tackle!"
Bulbasaur obeys as it uses its vines again to hold down Rattata as the grass starter changes in as it tackles the rat, and just like that, the rat Pokémon now have swirls in its eyes. Bulbasaur even let go of its vines as it knew it had won the battle.
Bulbasaur ran to Kris, rubbing its head on his left leg as he petted it in praise.
"Nice job Saur, another win! Go, Poké Ball!"
Like Pidgey, it was weakened in battle so Rattata was caught as Kris' second capture. And like before, Kris treated Rattata of its injuries as he fed it a berry. So after taking care of his Pokémon, Kris continues on his journey to Viridian City.
