Chapter 16 - 16

The sky had grown dark by mid-afternoon, and soon the first drops of rain began to fall. Aiko hurried out of the classroom, fumbling for her umbrella only to realize she'd left it at home.

"Of course," she muttered, pulling her jacket tighter around her.

Just then, Ren appeared, holding his umbrella. "Forgot yours again?" he asked, a teasing smile on his face.

Aiko's cheeks flamed. "I… didn't think it would rain!"

Ren tilted the umbrella so she could share it with him. "Here, come on. We'll get you home without a flood."

As they walked, the rain soaked the streets, creating small puddles that reflected the glowing streetlights. Their shoulders brushed, and Aiko felt her heart flutter every time.

At one point, Aiko slipped slightly on a wet patch. Ren caught her instantly, wrapping an arm around her waist to steady her.

"Thanks…" she whispered, her voice barely audible, heart pounding.

"You're welcome," Ren replied softly, holding her close for a moment longer than necessary. The warmth of his presence made Aiko's cheeks heat further.

They continued walking in silence, the sound of rain pattering against the umbrella surrounding them. Aiko noticed how calm and protective Ren seemed, how safe she felt just walking beside him.

When they finally reached her home, neither wanted to let go of the umbrella. Ren smiled softly. "See you tomorrow?"

Aiko nodded, grinning despite her flushed cheeks. "See you tomorrow."

As she watched him walk away, the memory of his steady presence and the gentle touch lingered in her heart. Today's rainy day mishap had turned into another small, unforgettable moment between them—one filled with warmth, trust, and quiet affection.
