Chapter 23 - Chapter 8: Gotham's Law_3

Batwoman completely ignored these words. Everyone knew Briss Vane was an empty-headed rich girl. The townsfolk thought she spent her nights living a life of debauchery and revelry, but in reality, it was all a facade performed by actors she employed.

She got straight to the point: "I have to leave Gotham for a while. Staying here will pose a threat to everyone."

"Oh? What lunatic this time? I'll call the station right away." Gordon exhaled, threw down the rag in his hand, and went to find his phone.

"I don't know, still searching for clues."

Batwoman shook her head, hidden in the darkness, her Bat Cloak blending seamlessly into the shadows, but Gordon, who was familiar with her, could imagine her appearance now.

"Then how do you know it's dangerous?" Gordon wondered.

"Someone told me, and in some respects, he's very credible." Batwoman seemed to be touching something in her pocket but did not take it out for Gordon to see: "You and Barbara must leave with me immediately, or those maniacs will use you to force me out."

Gordon fell silent; after a moment, he shook his head: "No, I'm the police director of Gotham, I would never leave. Anyone who wants to cause trouble in Gotham will have to get past me first."

"Are you sure? Although I don't know the specifics, from what I've gathered so far, this danger far exceeds anything before," Briss urged, "Maybe you could take a month's leave; we could take Barbara to find doctors globally."

"No, I'm not leaving. You take Barbara and go; I'll stay here," Gordon insisted. If Bat Heroine leaves and he follows, Gotham would be doomed, and perhaps thirty years of his hard work would be wasted in a single night: "Even if they kill me, you mustn't come back."

"I'm not leaving either. If my dad can stay, then as a woman, I have no reason to flee."

It was Barbara. Ever since being crippled by the Jester, though her life wasn't at risk, the pain in her waist often kept her awake at night. Her nerves always tense, waking at the slightest noise. This time, she heard the conversation between the two in the kitchen and came out in her wheelchair.

"Barbara, you can reconsider, maybe...." Briss began to say to her.

"No need. If the Jester couldn't kill me, no one else will. I'll stay here with my dad. I think the communication room at the station is relatively safe and allows me to use my computing skills."

Barbara refused her kindness, stating she wanted to share Gotham's fate.

Briss hesitated for a moment, seeing their determination, even she wanted to stay. But the mysterious person had told her that if she remained in Gotham, not just the city but the entire Earth would be endangered. She had to leave.

With a swish of her cloak, she left Gordon's house, heading to meet Alfred at their rendezvous point.

Gordon held Barbara and cried for a moment, bolstering his determination, and solemnly said into the darkness:

"We won't leave, Bat Heroine, go do what you must. I ... wait, she left again? Why can't she ever let me finish my sentence?!"

Gordon was helpless. Once again, just like hundreds of times before, Batwoman had vanished as suddenly as she'd appeared, never once letting him hear a farewell.

"Because that's just how Batwoman is, Dad, can you take me back to my room?" Barbara yawned, covering her mouth.
