Chapter 39: Planning
"This card in my hand is the Hunter License," Bean said, pulling a card from his pocket. The card bore the exclusive emblem of the Hunter Association. "You might think it looks very ordinary. Aside from its high-tech anti-counterfeiting manufacturing process, it's no different from a regular card."
"But its functions are actually incredibly powerful," Bean continued, raising a finger. "First, with the Hunter License, you can enter approximately 90% of countries that are otherwise prohibited, as well as 75% of restricted areas."
"You can use 95% of public facilities for free, enjoy financing limits comparable to top-tier global corporations, and if you sell it, you'll have more money than you could spend in seven lifetimes. In other words, as long as you possess it, you'll never have to worry about your future."
This was indeed true, as Bean had said. In many ways, the Hunter License symbolized wealth. It was worth noting that 60 of the world's top 100 wealthiest individuals were Hunters.
"So, please be cautious to avoid losing it or having it stolen, because the license cannot be reissued."
"According to our association's statistics, one-fifth of qualified individuals will lose their licenses within a year."
"Therefore, the first test after becoming a professional hunter is protecting your license."
"Next, the association's regulations..."
After reading the ten hunter regulations, Bean finally completed his mission and bowed to Mord and the others.
"The orientation is now concluded. From here on, it's up to you all. Please believe in yourselves, overcome obstacles, and advance toward your dreams!"
"I hereby declare you seven as new hunters!"
Mord carefully stored his Hunter License and glanced at Illumi, who was being surrounded by Gon and the others asking about Killua's whereabouts. He then turned and walked out—currently, he had no plans to visit the Zoldyck family.
"Don't forget our deal, alright?"
A familiar voice rang out.
Mord didn't turn back but simply waved his hand as he continued walking forward.
Hisoka, leaning against the wall, watched Mord's figure grow increasingly distant, his entire body beginning to tremble uncontrollably.
"The days waiting for fruit to ripen are the most wonderful. You better not disappoint me."
....
"Mord!" The bald Hanzo had been waiting on Mord's inevitable path for some time.
"Something wrong?" Mord looked up and asked.
"I'm returning to my country. I never expected to obtain the Hunter License with such performance. When we meet again, I will definitely defeat you!" With that, Hanzo directly handed Mord a postcard.
"If you come to my country, you can visit me anytime. I owe you a favor."
Mord took the postcard and glanced at it.
[Cloud-Hidden Style Hanzo]
"Among your Cloud-Hidden ninjas, is there one named Killer B?" Mord suddenly asked.
While Hanzo was still pondering hard, Mord had already vanished from the spot.
Hanzo's personality somewhat resembled Might Guy in certain aspects—an outlier among ninjas, but someone he could get along with.
After parting with Hanzo, Mord went to the nearby city of Aftab, sold the items he had scavenged during the first phase of the Hunter Exam, then rented a small building to settle down temporarily.
Since Mord had already learned Nen, there was naturally no so-called final test, and the Hunter Association wouldn't assign him any teacher.
This meant Mord was already an official hunter now.
Inside the room.
Mord opened his laptop and, using his Hunter License privileges, began browsing available jobs.
"Let's take on some random jobs first."
In this world, money was equally important.
Mord didn't have a clear direction for his future hunter career, but for now he'd likely lean toward bounty hunting.
First, he needed money.
Second, his blade needed experience.
The bounty hunter profession suited him quite well. Of course, he wouldn't refuse suitable jobs like criminal hunting or terrorist hunting either.
There was still some time before the Chimera Ant incident—he had to seize every moment to improve his strength.
Mord wasn't in a hurry to retrieve Zald's belongings left at the Hunter Association headquarters.
He had a premonition that Zald's items were definitely related to the Dark Continent.
His current strength wasn't sufficient to protect such items, and there was no safer place than the Hunter Association headquarters. Mord would go retrieve them at the appropriate time.
On the bounty hunter internal website, job listings were numerous and varied.
Bounty hunters, in simple terms, are experts who earn high bounties by completing difficult tasks assigned by employers, making their work nature extremely complex.
Their scope ranges from simple tasks like cleaning, transporting goods, or finding lost pets, to high-stakes assignments such as personal bodyguard duties, treasure or person searches, and even assassination missions—all potentially falling within a bounty hunter's job description.
Consequently, it's also the profession most prone to conflicts with peers.
Because they often overreach and prioritize money over relationships.
[Personal protection for the young lady of the Stoia family, duration one month, reward 15 million jenny.]
Babysitting someone—no interest, pass.
[Search for the gem Black Meteor, reward 50 million jenny.]
The money is substantial, but searching for things isn't Mord's forte, and it deviates from his plans, pass.
[Protect archaeology experts entering the Arlo Ruins, reward 1 million jenny.]
These archaeology experts' lives really aren't worth much; with just 1 million jenny, what capable person could they possibly hire?
...
After looking through them, there wasn't a single suitable commission.
Mord then clicked open the V5 Union's list of wanted criminals; just the process of tracking down these offenders is headache-inducing enough.
Although the professional hunters' dedicated internal network has specialized informants providing intelligence, this information isn't free—it all comes with a price.
In the original story, when Gon and the others inquired about the Greed Island game, the asking price was as high as 20 million jenny.
Back to the topic of money again.
Mord closed his laptop, planning to go out for a bite to eat first. He had just finished the Hunter Exam—even a workhorse in a production team wouldn't be pushed this hard.
No need to drive oneself so relentlessly; sometimes, proper relaxation can yield better results.
As he left, he saw his neighbor—a little girl sitting on a stool in front of her house doing homework. She glanced up when Mord came out but quickly averted her gaze.
By the time Mord returned home in the evening, carrying a large bag full of groceries, the little girl was still there.
A short while later, several men in black suits emerged from that house, one of them holding a case.
After that, no one else came out, but the door remained open.
Mord glanced at the group in black, then quickly looked away and entered his own house.
Those men earlier carried a faint aura of bloodlust—clearly, they had taken lives before.
But none of this concerned Mord.
