Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Another Child

Madeira, Portugal

'Huh?! Seriously?' Dolores screamed. The doctor nodded.

'You're having another child.' Dlores was so shocked. Dlores and Dinis already had three children, their daughters Elma and Katia, and their son Hugo.

'Are you sure? That's seriously unbelievable!!' It was only eight months since Hugo, their son, was born. A forth child was definitely a real surprise. 'Yes, I'm sure.' The doctor confirmed. 'It'll be real joy to your household!' Dlores loved that, but she and Dinis were both worried. Life on the Portuguese island of Madeira was hard. The weather wasn't a problem, but a lot of people were unemployed. Especially in the area of Funchal where they lived. The wealthy tourists stayed in the fancy hotels and never traveled far to spend their money. Dolores worked by making wicker baskets so that they could sell them for money, but Dinis had just returned from the army and couldn't get a good job. Sometimes, Dolores and Dinis could only get bread and soup for the family, and now, they would have to feed another child.

'Dinis, what are we going to do?!' Dolores immediately asked once they returned home. She wasn't sure if a fourth son was good or bad news. Space was another problem. The family was living in the house of Dinis' parents, but there would now be six of them. Dolores and Dinis didn't have the money to rent a house.

'We'll just give it our all.' Dinis answered calmly. Dolores sighed. Then she nodded. It wasn't just a moment of stress, it was also a life changing decision. The forth child they were having would have a really rough star to their life but Dolores and Dinis would try their best to help them. They would do anything to escape the life of poverty in Madeira. Dolores was a very tough person and her new-coming child, hopefully, would be too. When the doctor confirmed their new child was a boy, Dolores suggested the name 'Christiano' and Dinis liked it.

'It's a great name — the name of a honourable person.' She told the family. They loved the name so everyone agreed.

When Christiano was born, he came out as a heavy boy.As the doctor gently placed the baby on the bed, he burst into happy laughter. 'Weighing that much, Christiano can be a footballer!' He announced. Dolores and Dinis looked at each other, they loved the idea. Dolores was a Sporting Lisbon fan — a very strong team in Portugal. Dinis had played football while he was a young little boy and often watched the local team, Andorinha. His friend Sousa, who would be Christiano's godfather, was the captain of Andorinha. Christiano would have plenty on connections with football.

'Let's hope he does!' Dinis smiled as he got up. It wouldn't be easy for a boy like Christiano considering the fact that he's growing up in such a poor family, but anything was possible. Maybe little Christiano was one of the few boys that had the special talent to become legendary footballers but this could be a way for Christiano to escape a life of poverty in Madeira and make a better life elsewhere.
