Chapter 189 - Chapter 62: Blackmail, Collaboration, and Cashing In

Diana Kuno's expression at this moment was nothing but terror.

This was a living nightmare!

All she remembered was walking up to the office, just pushing the door open, then a shadow flickered, and she remembered nothing after that.

Panic-stricken, she looked around frantically, touched her neck, and felt nothing but a phantom pain.

"Security! Where's Security?"

Diana immediately called for security and then hurriedly returned behind her desk. She had already guessed the intruder's intention in her office, undoubtedly targeting the server's data.

So her first reaction was to immediately check her computer and notify security to confirm if the server was damaged.

But as Diana sat down in her chair, taking several deep breaths again, her oxygen-starved brain gradually regained clarity. She suddenly froze in place, realizing the gravity of the situation.

Is it time to protect the company's assets now?

Those people hacked the company's server right before her eyes, and they got away!

So whose responsibility is this?

If there's a large-scale data leak and intelligence exposure, who will bear the blame?

The regional director who went home early to sleep or Joanna, the deputy director with ambitions only for climbing up?

No, no, no, the only one to take the fall is herself! Because she had seen those robbers and survived without even being hurt!

Gotta think of a way, think of a way...

A video call popped up in front of Diana's eyes. Her expression was somewhat grim as she decided to answer.

"Deputy Director Kuno, this is Captain John of tonight's security. We've discovered traces of intruders, and have dispatched a special ops team to your floor for support!"

The security captain speaking was already drenched in sweat.

"Useless!"

Diana cursed first, but then had a brainwave: "Wait, hold the support, let me ask you, has anyone been injured?"

"No," John replied concisely.

"How many people have found out about the company's intrusion?" Diana urgently inquired.

"Currently... apart from me and tonight's security team, only you," John answered, and Diana fell into a long silence.

After thinking for a while, she decisively said, "Listen, John, I'm saving you—if the company finds out you let someone slip in freely, what will happen?"

"Internal investigation... demotion or even termination," John's voice was hoarse, his mood somber as could be heard.

Diana spoke clearly: "We were attacked on the highway this afternoon, and Technical Director Emilia disappeared, and tonight there was a theft.

Whose person is Emilia?"

"She... she's Joanna's person," John said.

"If any internal loss is discovered, is there a possibility that Emilia did it? I mean, could she be an undercover agent for another company, using this opportunity to disappear?

If so, if we lose something, it's not a problem with our security.

Perhaps Emilia had already stolen it, who knows?

And you weren't attacked tonight either, security was normal, and no one failed their duty!

Do you think this possibility... exists?"

With Diana's words still hanging, John fell silent.

It only took about two breaths before John gritted his teeth and said, "That's right! Exactly! Security was perfectly normal tonight! No issues whatsoever!"

"John, no matter what loss the company suffers, we can investigate slowly, but as long as it's not discovered, we know nothing.

Even if something is exposed, the missing Director Emilia could be responsible for all the leaks, got it?

And Emilia is Joanna's person, the entire project was led by Joanna and Emilia, I was only in charge of drug synthesis, and you're just a conscientious security captain, got it?"

Diana repeated, solidifying their mutual resolve.

This time, John's response was equally resolute: "I get it! The surveillance system malfunctioned today, causing data loss, which must be related to today's convoy attack and the disappearance of Director Emilia."

"Excellent, Captain John. The regional director will convene a meeting tomorrow, and I will faithfully report all these facts, allowing the truly responsible to be accountable, not us diligent employees, wouldn't you say?"

After Diana finished speaking, John's reply was firm and unwavering: "Yes, those who truly made mistakes should be the ones to face punishment."

"Good, remember to delete the conversation record... that'll be all for now."

Diana ended the call, took several deep breaths in her seat, then got up and picked up a bottle of fine wine from the office liquor cabinet.

In this day and age, wines made from grapes are rare, and she seldom indulges, but today, she could not muster any interest in decanting and savoring it as usual, only popping the cork and taking a few gulps.

Sorry, Joanna...

If until the events today, Diana had considered weathering the storm with Joanna, solving the crises that the convoy attack might trigger.

Then now, Diana had no inclination towards nobility—she simply wanted to safeguard herself first.
