"My lady, something is wrong with these creatures tonight," Parker said, his voice carrying a weight I had never heard before. "Typically, they come in small groups, maybe ten at most, sometimes just scattered individuals. But this... this is different."
I moved closer to the stone ledge, forcing my trembling legs to carry me forward. I had to see what we were facing.
The view below stole the breath from my lungs.
Countless beasts swarmed in the shadows beneath us, their monstrous forms revealed by the wavering torchlight from the watchtowers. These were not the creatures I had imagined from childhood stories. They towered above any horse I had ever seen, their massive shoulders rippling with unnatural muscle. Their skin was a patchwork of cracked scales and matted fur that seemed to absorb the light.
