Chapter 12 - A Howl, A Heartbreak

Lucy's POV

I could vividly feel his intense stare right on my back not quite long after I made my way to the direction of the top of the stairs.

Does he have it in mind to follow me?

Was he prepared to yell at me?

Maybe to the point of throwing something at me?

Nope, that may not happen.

There was a deafening silence.

What a coward he is.

I slammed the door so hard that it shut aggressively behind me, and I wasted no time dropping into the massive king-sized bed like I was totally free from chaos by just entering the room.

He had the audacity to tell me Alphas have room for making mistakes.

That they were not trained to apologise.

Yeah, could that be even true? Well, it's not like I have any business being an Alpha, and my patience obviously doesn't possess a howling feature.

My stomach churned greatly.

This time, it wasn't from any stomach arch, and it wasn't from my rage either.

It was instead coming from a place of a weird twist. It came out very sharp but surprisingly not painful. It was strangely kind of… fluttery

"Ugh, it can't be now," I muttered, supporting my left hand with my stomach while the right hand rubbed over my belly.

It kept twisting again and again. This very time, it came somewhat too hard. A heat spread through my lower abdomen, forcing me to straighten up immediately.

What in heaven's name could that be?

My fingers shook wildly as I placed them on the same spot again.

Then, I heard a boom.

That was a heartbeat.

It was exactly like an echo, and the strange thing was that it was inside me.

I counted one… then two… three weak and faint pulses. It was soft and speedy and felt alive.

Oh God, this is unbelievable.

This baby was actually real, like life was growing inside me.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I stayed frozen, greatly speechless as I sat on the bed, not willing to remove my hands from my stomach, trying everything possible to process what was happening to me, the fact that it wasn't just me again; I was no more alone in my own body anymore. This has nothing to do with just science or doing this for money and survival. There was a heartbeat, indicating a growing life. Is this how it feels to be pregnant?

I didn't shed tears.

Though I almost did that.

Then, something mysteriously shifted just outside my door. I sensed it went away before I heard it. It was a soft, low, but guttural growl.

I jumped up immediately and flung the door open.

And right there before me, there he was.

It was Ryker.

He was standing with his chest falling and rising in the hallway.

I blinked in shock. "Were you the one growling a few seconds ago?"

"No, that's not me," he snapped too quickly. "My wolf was just… reacting to..."

"To what exactly? That's my detestable attitude, right?"

He didn't laugh as I expected him to.

Not even a blink was spared.

He just stood there, staring straight at me.

"What, you can't speak now?" I asked.

"Something's different this time, please."

"Wow, good to hear. Congratulations, darling Sherlock."

His voice remained serious."Your scent did it for me."

I blinked in confusion. "Excuse me, what does that even mean?"

He moved a few more steps closer, nostrils flaring up slightly. "It changed to something different. Just minutes ago."

I took quick steps backward immediately. "Okay, you must stop it immediately; that's very creepy. Don't you dare sniff me in that manner."

He didn't listen to me at all.

Of course, that's typical of Ryker.

"I felt it, and it was real," he muttered, eyes locked on my stomach. " I felt it right from the other side of the house, I sensed a flicker from there."

"You rushed here just to tell me you sensed when the baby kicked?"

"No, I rushed here because I sensed life."

We stared for seconds at each other, not knowing who was more confused than the other.

And then, there was silence.

Well, the silence didn't last long, as I rushed and said something inappropriate.

"From my observation, your wolf seems more emotionally available and compassionate than you."

His jaw tightened in fury. "He takes time to respond only to what matters."

"Oh, wow, I got what you just did there. So the baby in my womb means the world to you, but the woman carrying it doesn't matter?"

His eyes shot me a dangerous and dark look.

"I didn't imply that."

"But you never said the opposite either, meaning the same."

He took another more deliberate step closer to me with a slow breath. "How are you feeling inside?"

"Like I'm hooked on cooking a tiny werewolf, which obviously has no iota of respect for my poor bladder, not to talk of my emotions."

His lips curved in something familiar and lighter.

Was that what I think? Did he almost smile?

I raised a protest with my eyebrow. "Don't you dare get the guts to smirk. This has everything to do with you, it's your fault."

"I can't remember forcing you."

"Well, it's no news that you manipulated me."

"You signed with both your hands."

"I was totally vulnerable, I had no choice."

"And unfortunately, you still are."

Well, just like that, we were back to it—the usual ping-pong of raining petty—the war that I found out we both secretly enjoyed engaging in.

"You gonna be a good boy and apologize now?" I dared him, frowning.

"No, that's never gonna happen."

"Didn't think that would be possible."

Then, he stared blankly at me, almost scared.

Then, suddenly, he said something out of the blue, something I never expected.

"It wasn't just one, I heard two heartbeats."

I froze in shock. "What, how possible is that?"

"Why two? Not even the regular one."

"No, that's not happening. Ryker, I didn't sign up for...are you in any way insinuating..."

"Twins, yes, twins."
