I took a glance and there was about twenty thousand dollars.
However, I did not dare to take it, I looked at him with a bewildered expression.
"Half of this is your wages and the other half is to buy groceries.
I am afraid that you might quit suddenly, so I gave you the money in advance just in case."
Indeed, I am very short of money now, so I accepted it without pretending to be modest.
I was about to leave when my mother called.
"What are you doing? You went out last night, that's okay, but why are you not back yet?
Your younger brother's phone was broken by you last night, he wants to replace it with a 15 Pro max, bring back the money quickly for him to buy it."
I forced a bitter smile.
Did she really think I was stupid?
The phone was broken just because I threw it on the coffee table?
Clearly she was making an excuse to cheat me out of money.
I hung up the phone directly.
A few more calls came in after but I did not answer any of them.
When I got to the company, everyone who saw me appear with Edwin gave me envious and resentful looks.
Instantly, I became the public enemy of the women in the company.
"She just recently joined the company, how is she already involved with the CEO?
I've been here for three years, yet she outran me."
"You've only been here three years, I've been here for five years, it's not your turn based on seniority."
"So you're saying you're old."
"Who are you calling old?
Fox spirit?!"
The two women who were targeting me a second ago started to quarrel the very next second.
Edwin seemed used to this scene.
He simply took my hand and led me into the elevator.
I sighed deeply, once I got into the elevator, I asked Edwin, "Are you trying to get me killed?"
Edwin let go of me and said, "I just can't help it.
These women are just too exhausting and I need a shield.
And I cannot think of anyone else more suited for the job than you."
"Why me?"
"Because you don't care about me."
He was right about that.
All the other women in the company would love to get into his bed, but I'm different.
His call last night, honestly, saved me.
Otherwise, I'd probably be in bed with Michael by now.
But I didn't know then that he and I were destined to be tangled up together.
In the afternoon, Edwin had to leave early for some business.
After tidying up, I also left, preparing to do grocery shopping.
Walking out of the company, I kept feeling like a pair of eyes were watching me from the shadows.
But when I turned around, I didn't see anybody.
Perhaps, it was just my imagination.
I had just stepped outside after grocery shopping when two men jumped out of a van and pulled me in.
Groceries scattered on the ground, before I could react, the van was already moving.
Inside the van, including the driver, there were four men.
They all wore hoods, so I couldn't see their faces clearly.
I was pinned down by two men with a cloth gagging my mouth.
I was rendered speechless.
I started to feel panic.
