Chapter 4 - Chapter 4- Doctor

A normal day in the denver-smith-heart home. The young male with dirty blond hair was helping his sister. She was always sick so she mostly stayed in his room. When the male was not tending to his sister he would stare out the window watching the neighbors. There was a young man about his age over there. He had brown to orange hair and beautiful blue eyes.

Suddenly an explosion happened. The young man ran out of his room to see his brother in the hall.covered in sot he did not look hurt. "Come on, you" the young man said, picking him. "I am okay really charlie" the brown haired boy said pulling up his goggles. "Hush let me check you" Charlie said, sitting his brother down on a bed. The only part of the boy that was not dirty was around his eyes.

"How did you blow yourself up this time Michael?" Charlie said getting a wet rag wiping all the dirt off his brother. "Ahhh!" someone yelled from down the hallway. "Wipe the rest of that off mikey i will be right back" charlie said going down the hall to see their elder brother hurt his hand. "Oh good grief" Charlie said, running back to his room. "Mikey stay until i have finished with garret" charlie said grabbing a bandage and some stuff to clean the wound. "I am not hurt, I am gonna leave" Michael said, trying to get up.

"Michael oliver smith sit your butt down now" charlie said, now bandaging Garret's hand. None of the kids wanted to go by their fathers last name because he was a wretched man. He walked back to his room to see that Michael couldn't walk even if he wanted to. He also had a scorch mark on his hand. "What were you working on?" Charlie said, cleaning the scorch mark. Michael bit his lip because it was stinging. "I was making something for mom, '' Michael said his head was down.

"Look i just don't like seeing you hurt.you are my brother. I don't want any of my family hurt '' Charlie said now looking over michaels ankle that he twisted. Their brother David was standing in the doorway listening and he got a bit emotional. He grabbed his chest then went back onto the roof he just stared at the rest of the town he could see. A warm breeze blowing through his dark brown hair.

Inside someone else called Charlie because they needed help. He of course wrapped up michaels ankle first. "Rest here for a bit please i will be right back" charlie said grabbing his medical bag. He went and helped one of his sisters. He then sighed as he looked into the kitchen where his mother was cooking a bunch of food for all the kids that live there.

"Mom?" Charlie said to get his mothers attention. "Yes charlie" Devin replied with a slight smile. "Do you hate your life?" Charlie asked kinda slumped in one of the chairs at the dining room table." No, I don't hate my life. I have all my kids to take of. I never had anyone to care for before '' Devin said, grabbing plates from the cabinet.

He then had a flashback to when it was just Garret,Michael and sam. He loved his family so far but then he found out he was pregnant again. At first he was not happy Devin didn't think he even wanted more children but his husband insisted.

On July 11th in 159 a warm summer day. Devin was sweating so much already when he went into labor. Sam his husband did not care. He wouldn't even take Devin to the hospital.after the baby was born and poor Devin seen it was another boy. Devin started to cry as he held his new baby close to him. The little one reached his hand up, wiping Devin's eye.

"Aww i think i wanna name him charles" devin said snuggling his baby gently. "Okay his name will be charles will denver-smith" sam said with a smile. Devin sighed a bit he didn't get to name their dead baby or the rainbow child they had. He was only allowed to give two their first names. Michael and Charles the two were born more recently.

Back in the kitchen of present day. Devin was crying a bit. "What is wrong mom?'' Charlie said, walking toward his mother. "Nothing my love" Devin sobbed trying to wipe the tears away himself. Charlie hugged his mom then used a handkerchief to wipe his eyes. "You know you don't have to be strong all the time, you are human," Charlie told his mom. "Tell everyone dinners ready," Devin said.

Charlie walked into the dining room and announced that dinner was ready. Everyone gathered around the table and began to eat. As they ate, Charlie couldn't help but think of how his mother kind of ignored what he said. He knew that mom didn't have to be strong all the time. He also knew that mom was a very strong person, and that mom would always be there for him, no matter what.

After dinner, as everyone was retreating to their rooms, Charlie spoke. "Mom," he said, "you didn't respond to what I said earlier. You usually never ignore me, and You told me to call everyone for dinner. What's wrong, Mom?" Devin, who was cleaning up the dishes, answered, "Nothing is wrong, Charlie, my love." "There are plenty of things wrong," Charlie countered, "and you know it. Our father isn't well."

"Watch your words when you talk about your father," Devin said, meticulously drying each dish. "Mom, stop pretending that everything's fine. It's not," Charlie exclaimed, nearly raising his voice. Devin spoke calmly, telling Charles in a collected tone, "I don't wish to further discuss this, so please go to your room, Charles Will Denver-Smith." Charlie exhaled deeply and lamented, "As you are aware, I don't use my father's surname."

"Why not?" Devin inquired, his expression neutral. Charlie paused, his jaw clenching as he considered the question. "It's complicated," he replied, his voice low. Devin waited patiently, his gaze steady and unwavering. After a moment, Charlie continued. ""My father tried to abandon us, and I've never really had a father figure in my life," he elucidated. Devin said, his voice soft and understanding. "Well even though Sam is barely here he is your father and we can't change that"
