Chapter 19 - Ticking The Boxes

"You might as well instruct my father to have another person sign the consent form," Conor declared in a plot twist.

He pushed Kelly while he was halfway through the exit door.

Like a soldier about to reprimand a bloodied civilian, Kelly approached Conor with a sense of grandeur.

The way he marched toward Conor emphasized that they might be on the verge of war.

As he spoke, Kelly looked straight into Conor's eyes. "I am still superior to you, despite my poverty. I did not choose to live impoverished. Go talk to your father and find out more about me. My life has not been a bed of roses, but I suppose he can explain why."

"Whatever! Why should anyone care about your integrity? Your pitiful life is being concealed by you. I think you ought to feel embarrassed." Conor made an incredible return. He seemed to have practiced the lines of humour beforehand.

He strode to his room after the brutal response, as if he had just returned from combat.

It got worse just as Kelly was beginning to feel relieved that Conor was leaving. He is unable to move past the insult Conor threw at him.

Kelly was not only deeply offended, but it also brought to mind the ill-advised choice he had made with George that permanently destroyed his life.

Kelly lamented, "I would not have helped George if I knew it was going to turn out this way," regretting his choice.

He believed that one brave choice was the best thing that had ever happened to him, but it has now turned into a nightmare.

However, Kelly later reflected on his late wife, who is also Katrina's late mother. That was when she was heavily pregnant.

It was not her parents' intention to see her. Her only hope was Kelly. There was nothing he could do but take the responsibility.

Deep in contemplation, Conor dressed up and made his way back to the living room as if he were about to go out to dinner. His tense expression had become clean and new.

He said, "Let us go," to Kelly.

He tried to get out, but Kelly stayed put. He stood there like a TV, watching Conor.

"Leave, I said."

Conor spoke again. His first thought was that Kelly had not heard him.

"How about Like this?" Conor's attire was indicated by Kelly.

"You do not give a damn about my attire choice. Oh, I see now. Who do you think will be as impoverished as you?" Conor sparked yet another incident.

Kelly was wise enough to avoid it this time. He turned to leave after saying, "Never mind."

"You are going to follow me," Kelly concluded.

"I am not.

We take a ride in my car..

My father's car cannot be left with you. What if you end up taking it?

. My father letting you drive his car is still a mystery to me." Conor insisted." Even though he was grinning, he was taking it very seriously.

Kelly could take no more of the insult. In fact, he was unsure of how to respond. Kelly never realized he was poor until that very moment.

He tried to speak, but the words would not come. His lips grew too large to move sideways instantly.

After enduring the insult, he sat down beside Conor at the front.

"What do you think you are doing?" He asked Kelly. There seemed to be no end in sight to the drama.

"Go sit in the back so I can see you in the mirror in case you decide to steal something.," Conor said, insulting Kelly without giving him a chance to catch his breath.

Kelly quietly and unopposed went outside the car and took a seat in the back. He could no longer take the insults.

Conor pulled up in the middle of the road to look at his phone as they followed Kelly's instructions and drove to the hospital.

Kelly, bewildered and dressed in confusion, asked. "What is wrong this time? What made you pull over the car? Did you realize that we need to be in the hospital right away?"

"Shut up and let me think," Conor shouted at Kelly, his voice full of volume.

"I doubt I can make it any longer.

I have a date with someone," Conor said, gazing at his phone. He could not be controlled. In fact, Kelly could hardly stand his heat.

Kelly called George's phone immediately. He figured that George was in the best position to speak sense into Conor's head.

Conor forewarned his father, "I do not mind if you lie in bed sick forever. Just stick to your plan,"

George revealed, "You are free to have access to everything I took away from you. I just unfreeze your account,"

Conor disagreed. He had not yet figured out how George had accomplished that so quickly while they were still on the phone.

While still unsure, Conor received a bank notification on his phone.

The notification indicated that his transaction had recently been processed again.

After his bank sent him a confirmation text, Conor reassured his father and hung up.

"I believe you got the money, didn't you? Now start the damn car. We need to leave immediately," Kelly requested.

"I don't want to leave anymore.

I want to go back home," Conor came up with the last-minute decision.

He finally got what he wanted when his Father unfroze his assets. Now he feels like his Father's presence isn't needed anymore.

"Why are you telling me?

What do you want me to do with this irrelevant piece of information right now? Because I can't seem to understand where you are going with this," Kelly spoke from the back seat.

Turning his direction over to Kelly, Conor responded. "Are you that dumb that you can't think? Do I need to spell it out to you? Call my Dad. Let him know of the recent development to avoid getting him disappointed eventually,"

"How do you even sleep at night, knowing that your brain is empty? It must be so hard for you, isn't it? Don't worry; I thoroughly understand the pain you are going through.

You must be the greatest fool on earth if you ever think I will pay attention to you. The last I checked, he's your father. You've got his mobile number, don't you?

Why don't you call him yourself rather than burden me with your responsibility?" Kelly snarled.

He remained firm on his decision and wasn't scared that Conor was going to do something nasty to him.

Conor sighed, checked his phone, and mumbled. "We can proceed with the trip. I changed my mind already,"

"Wait. Don't start the car yet.," Kelly halted Conor.

"Why the sudden change of mind? I am curious to find out. Let me guess, your date disappointed you, didn't she? Serves you right.

Now you know what it feels like to be disappointed in the dying minutes." Kelly burst into wicked laughter to mock Conor, knowing how upset the latter was.

"This is the point where you mind your business and stay out of my affairs for good. I am not going to remind you again," he warned Kelly while preparing his punch.
