Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 2: Orphanage

PALZIN (CITY)

7:00 AM

CANTEN STREET

Viena never liked the Orphanage, she always felt like her parents would come, they would find her, and they would sue this stupid place. "Viena? you thinking up another idea to get us in trouble?" Vecer laughed. "No Vecer you wouldn't understand who I really am, what I really am" Viena said a little over dramatically. Vecer was Viena's best friend in the Orphanage, actually her only best friend. She had met him when they brought her into the orphanage as a baby. She obviously didn't recognize him or even realize who he was then. But now they were Besties. The director banged on the table, "attention all orphans today I am glad to present to you the adoption program!" he yelled as if it were some kinds of special event. Every month at this exact date, which was the day of the 13th. Viena didn't know why it was that day, isn't 13 an unlucky number. But she thought maybe opposites might attract. Vecer gave her that look, the look that meant he had something on his mind. She gave him a reassuring smile. "SOOO..." and on and on he went about the adoption program which we already heard a good number of times. "Hey, don't you think we would get adopted today, you know by someone?" Viena questioned but Vecer stared at the director motionless like a robot. "Is he even your friend?" said a random voice in Viena's head. "Yeah, I mean what kind of friend just leaves them on hold?" snickered another voice. Viena cleared her throat as if to flood out the voices in her head. "I wonder what would happen if I ran away?" Viena thought in her head. Sure, it seemed like such a simple task, but the orphanage had high security, they were so worried about the children's safety as if they weren't almost 10. At least Viena was turning 10. Vecer was a bit older than her, he was turning 13. Viena always admired him for having that stance, that look that showed that he was strong. At least strong enough for what she was always planning. She liked to think of Vecer as her own bodyguard, one that you wouldn't need to pay. He stayed by your side because he wanted to, because he's your best friend. Viena scanned the auditorium; there were lots of people who weren't paying attention and were talking to their friends. Others napping due to a scarce amount of sleep. But there were only few like Vecer who were paying attention to the announcement as if their life depended on it. Viena on the other hand was just by herself in her own group, of course no one but her noticed since she was really the only one paying attention to what everyone was doing. Viena was the only one that was switching back and forth through thinking, then talking and staring at the director, (but mostly zoning out). Viena couldn't help but stare at Wan, he was indeed the most popular guy in the orphanage, and the most handsome Viena thought. Wan unlike Vecer was a lot meaner to Viena and clearly didn't like her. But that wouldn't stop her from staring a bit, everyone does have eyes for a reason, right? Viena protested to herself. "And that is why it's very important to be on your best behavior tonight, you might just get adopted," the director squealed. But to Viena it just sounded like he was sick of them sticking around in this orphanage. Like he wanted to get rid of them as quick as possible, like a panda. He didn't mind taking care of orphans, but he wants new people. He's sick of talking to the same old people. And so were they. The director briefly paused for a moment, "now our amazing guards will escort you to your post," the director smiled but Viena felt nothing but dismissiveness. Everyone slowly got up waiting for the guards to come get them, Viena on the other hand stayed seated, what was the point of standing up if the guards wouldn't even come until a few moments. "Psst", Vecer signaled for Viena to get up, but she stayed glued to her spot waiting for the perfect moment to stand. Viena slowly got up when she saw a guard approaching their section, he strutted over slowly but steadily, his black leather boots squeaking against the floor. He wore a black suit and white tie, similar to all the other guards. He streaked his light brown hair for a moment before picking up his phone at the 'ding' of a text message. Viena felt like he was taking his time, see this was the problem with the orphanage, they act like they like us, but everyone knows that they have their own lives outside of this terrible place. Viena stopped the voice in her head head for a moment, she didn't think that they were supposed to be perfect and act all happy with them all the time, but sometimes they showed just how much of an outside life they had. For example, this guard, he doesn't even care that they need to be escorted to do their own separate work. Viena groaned than scanned the place, most of the people were nearly out the door. Viena looked at Vecer with a look of irritation, Vecer slowly gave a faint smile his reaction a little late as if something else had been on his mind. Viena noticed. The guard quickly put in a response into his phone, then started chuckling a bit before he started to accelerate towards the children. In fact, his face actually shifted into a more alternative work face, as he approached the children with rapid steps. His eyes locked with there's and suddenly he started speed walking which reminded Viena of how she would do that whenever she was late for an announcement. He finally reached them looking a little out of breath, he quickly wiped off some sweat before clearly meeting their eyes. "Sorry", it sounded like he was going to say something important form his personal life, but he paused realizing he shouldn't just give information out like that. "Here are the names that are in group 1", he paused, "Viena, Wan, Anka, and Navo you will be doing the laundry". He shifted to the other children, "next for group 2 is, Jory, Stacy, and Vecer who will be doing the mail". The guard than waited for everyone to understand who they were with and which room they were going to, "okay", he started as he signaled the children to come behind him, "Let's get to our places." He led them through the doors than met with some other guards as all the other children gathered with their friends to their rooms.
