Aoki avoided group lunches because small talk drained him; between work and study he had no bandwidth for normie social life.
As for Hikigaya… he was just weird and friendless.
The two of them, one behind the other, quietly eating in an otherwise lively class, made for an odd sight.
Because of it, Hikigaya finally noticed the transfer student who seemed a lot like him.

Thinking of his own bleak youth, Hikigaya winced. Without Komachi, he'd have drowned in the sea of loneliness long ago.
