Chapter 16 - Aptitude Assessment [3]

"Yeah… yeah, I don't care about Rosswell!"

Zhao Yu said, voice echoing slightly off the high ceilings of the aptitude assessment hall.

Panels of glowing energy floated around, scanning and measuring candidates, but his attention was elsewhere, fixed entirely on his own thoughts of grandeur.

"Hahaha! I am the great Zhao Yu, after all! Legendary, unshakable, unforgettable!"

He spun slightly in place, letting the dim light from the floating panels glint off the edge of his staff, giving it an exaggerated heroic shine in his mind.

"Surpassing Rosswell? Ha! That's nothing. That's child's play! The so-called main character of this world? Amateur. Hah! He moves forward slowly, like he's calculating every step… boring. I? I move with style. With flair. With chaos!"

He crouched slightly, scanning the other candidates distractedly, though none of them registered him, none of them understood what genius in motion looked like.

That was fine. Let them be oblivious.

They couldn't interfere with greatness.

"I'll surpass him,"

He muttered, voice low, teeth clenched in a grin.

"Yes… surpass the so-called hero of Shivering Skies. Every move he makes, I'll anticipate. Every skill he masters, I'll refine faster. Faster. Better. Smarter. Hahaha! This is my world now."

He waved his hand dramatically toward the floating panels, as if challenging them.

"Let the aptitude assessment measure me! Let it test me! Let it see… Zhao Yu is not here to play. I dominate. I control. I… outshine! Hahahahaha!"

A faint pulse of energy from the hall brushed against him, but he barely noticed, too caught up in his own excitement.

His grin widened, a manic light in his eyes.

"The main character? Rosswell? Sure, he has the tutorial beast and some… but I've got me. And me is more than enough. Let's see if he even realizes the storm is coming."

He stepped forward toward the first panel, staff tapping lightly on the floor, a rhythm to his chaos.

"Let the story unfold, but know this, Zhao Yu doesn't just exist here. He excels. He dominates. And someday… someday, I'll make sure everyone remembers it."

But then,

Bam—!

"Hey! You think you can just get away like this, you piece of shit?! I am Lucas Arkham, the heir of the Arkham family!"

Zhao Yu tilted his head, squinting toward the source of the commotion.

There, a tall figure with flaming red hair barreled toward Rosswell, chest heaving with anger.

Yang Yi moved instantly, stepping between them, arms raised, her tone firm yet controlled.

"Mr. Lucas… please! This is a public area, and a place where candidates are undergoing assessments! Calm down..."

Her sentence was abruptly cut short as Lucas shoved her aside without hesitation.

"Fucked off, lady!"

"...!"

He spat, advancing toward Rosswell with clenched fists.

Zhao Yu's lips twitched into a grin, his staff tapping lightly against the floor as he muttered to himself, barely quiet enough for the hall not to hear:

"Ho, that's Lucas Arkham… I know this scene. This is the exact scene where Rosswell, the main character of this world, utterly demolished him. And Lucas? One of the top ten families in Solar-3… yeah, chaos guaranteed. Ohhh, this is too good."

Rosswell, already standing with his posture precise and measured, observed every movement.

His eyes flicked between Lucas and Yang Yi, processing energy signatures, muscle tension, and movement patterns.

He flexed his fingers slightly, feeling the faint pulse of qi beneath his skin, glowing subtly as if the hall itself acknowledged his readiness.

Lucas, seething, barked again:

"You think you can just walk past me? I won't let this go. Not after not even apologising after bumping at someone."

Yang Yi's eyes darted between the two men. Her expression, calm yet sharp, attempted to mediate.

"Rosswell, just, ignore him. This is not the place. We need to focus on your assessment. Don't escalate, please."

Lucas, however, was beyond reason.

He lunged, red hair whipping behind him, fists aiming straight at Rosswell's chest.

"...!"

But before Rosswell could act, a loud, irreverent voice rang out

"Whoa there, buddy!"

"...."

Zhao Yu stepped forward casually, spinning his staff lazily in one hand, his grin wide and mischievous.

'Yeah, no. I'm… uh… changing the story, guys. Let's see how this plays out!'

Rosswell's eyes flicked to him, the precision in his gaze momentarily interrupted by an unfamiliar energy.

A faint blue shimmer, reacting to Zhao Yu's chaotic aura, hovered at the corner of his vision.

"Excuse me,"

Rosswell said, his voice even, measured, almost mechanical.

"Your presence is unregistered. Recommend non-interference with ongoing assessment."

Zhao Yu waved him off dramatically, staff tracing lazy arcs in the air.

'Oh, calm down, Mr. Main Character. I'm just… editing the narrative a little. You know, spice things up for fun.'

Lucas paused, glancing at Zhao Yu, confusion flickering across his red-haired scowl.

"What the, who the hell are you?!"

"Zhao Yu. Don't worry about me,"

He said with a sly grin, stepping closer to Rosswell, voice dropping into a theatrical whisper.

"I just happen to know how this scene usually goes… and let's say… I prefer my version."

Rosswell's robotic voice cut through the tension once more.

"Haa..."

Yang Yi exhaled sharply, pinching the bridge of her nose.

"Rosswell, please… don't engage. Focus on the assessment. Lucas… step back, now."

Lucas ignored her, raising his voice.

"You think I'll just let this go? After everything? I'm not afraid of you, robot personality boy!"

Zhao Yu leaned back slightly, grinning wider, enjoying the chaos he'd unleashed.

'Hah! Exactly. Atleast there's character in this game who sees him as a robot instead of falling for him. That's the energy I wanted.'

Rosswell's eyes glowed faintly, precisely noting every muscle twitch, every breath, every subtle spike in energy output.

"...."

The hall seemed to hold its breath, panels floating silently, scanning, recording, while Rosswell, Yang Yi, Lucas, and Zhao Yu formed a tense tableau, the air thick with qi and unspoken calculations.
