Chapter 31 - The Frantic Pulse

The atmosphere inside Julians reinforced sports vehicle was dense with excitement and the scent of ozone. Eliza (in the CEO's body) sped recklessly darting through the nighttime traffic, like the car was a beast. The heightened security alarm they had set off at Titan was now being transmitted over all private security channels transforming the city into an enormous capture zone. Julian (in Eliza's body) remained seated next, to her continuously observing the specialized security scanner he had picked up from the drop location.

"Three vectors approaching from the northwest " Julian announced, his soft voice edged with urgency. "They're employing Titan's backup. Eliza you must leave the highway, at once."

Eliza yanked the steering wheel causing the luxury car to lurch into a tire-smoking swerve. Julians massive frame gave each action an intensity. She felt like a puppeteer handling a tank— power, excessive velocity. She was accustomed to finesse and efficiency in movement, not this force.

The CEO's Instinct

As they sped across a bustling crossroads a sluggish utility vehicle obstructed their way. Julian from his life would have either hacked the trucks GPS or acquired the firm to clear the blockage. Elizas espionage reflexes shouted steer clear, dodge sneak past.

However when overwhelmed by pressure the CEOs body reverted to its deeply embedded character. Eliza experienced a forceful burst—not her own but Julians recollection—and before she could intervene Julians large hand struck the steering wheel with violent impact. It wasn't a gesture; it was a wordless display of business frustration.

"What was that?" Julian (as Eliza) shouted, gripping the dashboard. "Did you actually... Threaten the truck with your hand? You resemble a toddler, in a business suit!" Eliza felt her face flush. "That wasn't me! That was reflex! The body aims to overpower the obstacle not steer clear of it!"

The Time Bomb Flips

At last they escaped the city boundaries rushing down the neglected road that headed into the Ancestral Coordinates. The immediate threat was over. The intense confrontation sparked something far more troubling, than a mere awkward sign.

A sharp excruciating cramp tore through Elizas chest (Julians body). It resembled a thousand needles stabbing her lungs. She inhaled sharply easing off the gas pedal. The agony was immediate and overwhelming more intense, than the persistent Link Pain.

"It's the Time Bomb " Julian recognized his strategic mind instantly kicking in. The intense psychological and physical pressure from the infiltration and breakout had triggered a surge of the soul rejection bringing the countdown nearer to zero. Elizas eyes wide, with fear glanced down at Julians arm (her arm) resting on the center console. The touch didn't lessen the agony; instead it made Julian sense the pulse of her bodys core rejection.

"Stop the car immediately!" Julian ordered, his voice prevailing over the CEOs panic. Eliza succeeded in steering the vehicle onto the roadside before collapsing gasping the overwhelming burden of the Time Bomb symptoms draining the vitality, from Julian's strong body. She trembled violently her flawless CEO outfit now drenched in sweat.

Julian driven by instinct unclipped his seatbelt and hurried over the center console. He had to steady her. He lifted her up making her rest, against his nimble frame. He started giving steady commands drawing on the first aid skills he gained from Elizas operative memories during their recent memory exchange.

"Take a breath deep and measured. Concentrate on my words. We must reduce the metabolic pace." Julian spoke with precision his small gentle hands steadying the head of the man who was officially his spouse, his existence now completely reliant, on preserving this strong body.

The Intimate Betrayal

In order to assess her pulse and breathing rate Julian needed to undo the buttons of Julians shirt. He paused briefly—this was the physical touch they'd shared since the compelled "reconciliation." He slipped his hand beneath the costly material feeling his fingers on the strong strange chest, beneath his own skin.

The action was clinical than sexual yet its impact was deeply disturbing. Julian sensed the uneven beating of his own heart fighting within his wifes body. As he bent closer his face near Julians sweaty neck Eliza sighed. "Julian " she murmured, saying his name for the time, without any bitterness. "It's painful."

The closeness of the intervention—the contact, the exposure of the skin the awareness that he was tracking his own heartbeat within his wifes body—was a painful farce of missteps. They were vulnerable, uncovered and wholly reliant, on each others abilities to endure this body exchange.

Julian pressed a nerve spot on the strong arm—a technique he recalled from Elizas memory. The ache, in Elizas chest (Julians body) gradually eased, giving way to fatigue. She leaned completely into him allowing the CEOs heavy head to rest on the collarbone of the operative.

"The Link... It isn't simply agony " Eliza murmured her tone frail. "The flare-up… ceased once you took charge. When you made contact with me. We don't merely inhabit a body; we endure the repercussions of soul rejection together."

Julian wrapped his arms tightly around the strong figure embracing him. He understood the reality: the Time Bomb dilemma wasn't primarily about separation but about losing synchronization. When one person was overwhelmed with anxiety the other needed to take charge and soothe them. Else both would collapse. Their way out depended not on space but, on harmonious emotional interdependence.

The Unseen Mile

Ten minutes later the intense part of the flare subsided. Eliza (, as Julian) gradually steadied herself her breathing becoming steady. No words were exchanged about the episode of weakness. They just adjusted their clothes fastening the shirt and drying the sweat off.

"We move forward " Julian stated, his tone now composed and collected the tone of the operative. "We possess the coordinates. We must get to that Ancestral Terminal."

Eliza nodded, pulling the massive CEO body back into a controlled, professional pose. She restarted the car, merging back onto the empty highway. They were both irrevocably changed—she had touched her own failing heart, and he had nearly watched his own body die. They drove into the rising dawn, silent and grim, knowing that every single mile between them and the city was also a mile closer to their shared, terrifying destiny.
