Chapter 37 - You’re Overthinking — This Actually Has Nothing to Do with the X-Men

He didn't even notice that someone had been standing silently behind him like a wooden post for over ten minutes.

That man was one of Kingpin's trusted aides — or at least, someone who could be called that.

Usually he handled all sorts of errands, but this time, he'd come to report an important matter:

The status of the mission Kingpin had sent Cory on earlier.

But he had absolutely no idea how to begin — especially how to persuade Kingpin to stop playing that game.

Hadn't the boss himself said that games were trash?

So why was he now completely absorbed, playing with such passion?

Could Warcraft really be that addictive?!

He didn't dare speak rashly. Kingpin was a man of pride; exposing him right now would be the same as begging for death.

So the aide quietly backed out of the room.

Then, moments later, he walked back in — this time deliberately making loud footsteps, loud enough for anyone to hear.

Sure enough, Kingpin reacted like a child caught playing games by his mother — he jumped as if electrocuted and hurriedly closed the game window.

Then, pretending to be calm, he slowly stood and looked toward the man who had entered.

"What's wrong with you? Why are you so flustered?"

"S-sorry, boss! I shouldn't have barged in so suddenly!"

"Fine, fine. Tell me what's going on," Kingpin sighed in relief.

Thankfully this idiot had entered so clumsily — otherwise, if his men saw him secretly playing games, that would have been mortifying.

A moment ago he'd been ranting that games were for kids and total garbage… and the next second, he was addicted beyond saving!

How embarrassing!

But damn it… it's so good.

Still, a man like Kingpin — the emperor of the underworld — had to preserve his dignity.

The aide took a cautious breath and said, "Well… I've been tracking Cory's operation. He started preparations last night, moved in during the early hours. He brought fifteen men and four modified helicopters. The result— total annihilation."

"…Mm… WHAT?!"

Kingpin's thick brow furrowed. His face was already terrifying by nature; when he scowled like that, he looked like a wrathful god ready to crush someone bare-handed.

"You're telling me they didn't catch Xu Dan — and all got themselves killed instead?"

"Y-yes, boss!"

"Explain! What happened?!" Kingpin barked.

"It went like this," the aide stammered. "Cory first sent the 'Three Brothers' to infiltrate and kidnap Xu Dan, but that didn't work. Then they deployed the helicopters. But, uh… that's when a storm hit the coastline — five tornadoes in total. The helicopters were all torn apart…"

Kingpin's expression darkened even more.

The "Three Brothers" were some of his best close-quarters fighters — not blood brothers, but so synchronized they might as well have been. Their combat power ranked among the top in his organization.

Cory had even sent them — and still failed?!

Wait… tornadoes?

"Are you telling me that damned Xu Dan lives in the middle of the Pacific Ocean?!"

What the hell — he lived in the U.S., not on some stormy sea! How could tornadoes just appear out of nowhere and shred helicopters?!

Even with a typhoon, they'd have had time to escape!

"N-no, sir!" The aide was drenched in sweat now, trembling as he spoke. "Xu Dan lives in a coastal development zone. I—I saw it myself from afar! Five tornadoes connecting heaven and earth surrounded the helicopters, tearing them to pieces bit by bit!"

"Then you must be blind!"

"…" The aide fell silent. Maybe he was blind. He wished he were — that would make this easier to accept.

Because what he saw defied all logic. Even now, he still felt like he was dreaming.

Kingpin took a long, heavy breath and began pacing, his thick brows forming a deep "川" between his eyes.

That man wouldn't dare lie — which meant there really had been five massive tornadoes appearing in perfect unison, cutting off the helicopters' escape.

But how could that be a coincidence?!

If five tornadoes of that magnitude really struck, half of New York would be gone by now!

If those storms weren't natural… then Kingpin might as well chop off his head and use it as a chamber pot.

"Don't tell me those damned X-Men interfered…?!" he growled.

Kingpin's influence spread across all of America — and because of that, he had crossed paths with countless so-called superheroes.

Every time a drug lab was destroyed, every smuggler caught, every underground operation busted…

At least half of them were his.

He'd long been at war with those self-righteous freaks.

Especially those blasted X-Men!

A bunch of genetic misfits calling themselves "heroes"? Please!

He remembered clearly — among their ranks, there was a woman whose mutant power was to control storms.

Could it have been her who intervened and protected Xu Dan?!

Damn it!

If those mutant freaks were involved, sending normal men was suicide!

Unless he deployed a full military force, there was no way to bring Xu Dan in alive.

"Ugh…" Kingpin exhaled sharply.

He wasn't particularly sentimental about the loss of "his brothers," but as a leader, he couldn't just throw men into a meat grinder without thought.

"Hold off for now," he finally said. "Keep watching him. Wait until you confirm Xu Dan is alone — then make your move."

"Yes, boss!" the aide said quickly, snapping to attention before hurrying out.

Being near Kingpin always felt like standing beneath a collapsing mountain — unbearable pressure at every moment.

Once he was outside, he finally let out a long breath.

"Phew…"

As Kingpin's trusted aide, he'd already thought ahead. He knew how to make this work.

He wasn't foolish enough to believe those storms were "natural."

Anyone with half a brain would suspect mutant involvement — and so did he.

So his plan matched Kingpin's perfectly: keep surveillance on Xu Dan, learn his habits, and strike when he was alone.

When that time came — X-Men or not — once they had the "target" in hand, it wouldn't matter who tried to intervene.

He felt quite proud of his cleverness.

He had no idea, of course, that both he and Kingpin were completely mistaken —

Because this whole thing had nothing at all to do with the X-Men.
