Obadiah was dead, and Stark Industries finally returned to peace.
Although several shareholders opposed shutting down the weapons division, none of them dared risk assassinating Tony now.
And so, Xu Dan could comfortably wait for Tony to show up to work every day.
Of course, Tony wasn't paid—he didn't need the money at all.Even without selling weapons, Stark Industries remained the world's number one enterprise. Money was the last thing the rich second-generation heir had to worry about.
He came to Antarctica daily solely because of a promise—and out of gratitude toward Xu Dan.
Since he had agreed to help Xu Dan develop hardware devices, he intended to follow through. He even brought Ethan—the physicist he had met in the cave—into Xu Dan's Antarctic hardware technology department.
In Tony's absence, Ethan quickly became a pillar of the team.
When Tony arrived… he could only serve as Ethan's assistant.
Scientific research cared nothing for age—only ability.
Xu Dan, likewise, put on a white lab coat and joined the development team himself.
To create a device powerful enough to run a fully virtual holographic game as soon as possible, he devoted himself completely to the work.
This was a monumental mission—to bring players across the world into a new universe.
A super game with a projected seventy percent of the global population online.
After watching the team for days, he had already learned many techniques—and far more efficiently than through books.
Suddenly, inspiration struck.
Watching the team busy at their workstations, he remembered something.
When Tony developed the Mark suits, Jarvis had been indispensable.Much of the work had been calculated or handled entirely by Jarvis—Tony only needed to give commands.
This development team needed an AI like that.
It would save at least half their workload.
Xu Dan could write an intelligent auxiliary program himself, but AI didn't grow from nothing.A newborn program had to learn—and that learning process could take who knew how long.
But now he had a better option.
"Tony, I'll be back."
He left the newly formed department, taking the special elevator up to the top floor.
There, he found Skye.
Skye—now a top hacker with real respect and authority in the company—was solely responsible for version updates.
"Skye, it's time to update CrossFire. Activate the 'Resident Evil' mode."
Skye lit up—her male-god of a boss had come to find her on his own—but then froze.
"BOSS, didn't we schedule Resident Evil mode for next month? The system announcement has already been sent," she explained.
Xu Dan frowned slightly. "Is there a holiday coming?"
Skye's heart fluttered—nervous, excited, afraid. Was the boss… finally planning to hit on her?Come on, come on—
But after a moment's thought, she deflated and answered honestly.
"The closest one is Christmas in half a month. …Oh! And today is World Human Rights Day—December 10."
"What?" Xu Dan blinked. He had never heard of such a holiday.
Skye instantly understood.Using World Human Rights Day as a dating excuse would've been a bit much…
But Xu Dan's next words turned her to stone.
He checked his phone. "Hmm. It is World Human Rights Day. Then in honor of the holiday, launch Resident Evil mode early. Celebrate properly."
As the boss, his order was absolute.
Skye nodded obediently. "Understood, Big Boss!"
At six o'clock that evening, players in the middle of storming transport ships or sniping in Overwatch suddenly received a prompt:
"Full-server notice: The game will update in 10 seconds. The update will take 60 seconds. During this time, players will be frozen. Thank you for your understanding!"
"Full-server notice: This update introduces—Resident Evil Mode!"
The announcement ignited a frenzy among CrossFire players.
If there was one thing they loved most about CrossFire, it was the atmosphere—the gray tones, the gritty textures, the immersive layout.
Getting into the game felt like stepping into a shooter's ultimate dream.
Quit, quit, quit!
One after another, players force-closed whatever match they were in, abandoned their lobbies, and waited tensely on the main menu.
The agonizing 60 seconds passed—and then, the darkened Resident Evil tab finally lit up.
Click!
Players went wild.
Thankfully, CrossFire now used Stark Industries' new servers—otherwise the entire system would have crashed instantly.
Zombies.
This theme appeared in the game for the very first time.
CrossFire had its own "biochemical mode," but players never considered it real biochemical horror—it was more like fighting weird monsters. Those "zombies" didn't look like zombies at all.
But Resident Evil mode captured the essence of the world's first true horror game.
Grotesque, horrifying zombies charged straight at you—terrifyingly real.
Unless you purposely lowered the graphics quality.
But if your machine could run ultra settings smoothly—why would anyone want low graphics?
And the opening segment of this "horror game" burned into players' memories—the zombies, the atmosphere…
And the little girl—the Red Queen.
Her eerie smile nearly gave players heart attacks. Several internet cafés had people getting choked up on the spot.
Meanwhile, in the Antarctic Game Building, Xu Dan was also watching the Red Queen.
But not from the computer game—from the System Points Mall.
With the launch of CrossFire and Prototype: Original Form, the items available in the mall had expanded significantly.
There was even the A-rank Blacklight Virus—but it was still locked for purchase.
That was the only worthwhile item from Prototype.
But CrossFire's offerings were far richer.
A dazzling array of guns, grenades, weapons, and equipment filled the store.
Even the ordinary firearms were incredibly cheap in the Points Mall.
