Chapter 11 - The One the Riddle Speaks Of

Before You Step Into Chapter 11

Chapter 10 left us with a question.

Chapter 11 may give us an answer.

Whether it is the answer we were looking for is another matter entirely.

Pay attention to what is said.

Pay closer attention to what isn't.

Thank you for continuing this journey with me.

The mystery is only beginning.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

My attention fixes on Thania.

She tried to stop those words from being spoken, which makes her the best place to start.

"I need to ask you something."

Thania meets my gaze without hesitation.

A faint curve touches one corner of her mouth. "Go ahead."

"If the Sentinels are the highest rank within the Tribunal, who stands above you?"

Something shifts behind her eyes.

Her expression holds, though her fingers move slightly against her side.

I catch it.

"So there is someone."

"I never said that."

"You didn't have to."

Thania studies me for a moment while I gather everything they have already told us.

"You have orders. Daniel has orders. The Judicars are hunting us, Gabriel apparently considers wandering through my mind acceptable, and everyone here keeps dancing around whoever sits at the top of this increasingly ridiculous ladder."

Jamey shifts somewhere behind me.

I keep my attention on Thania.

"Then someone whispers that the Living Scripture doesn't know yet."

The title carries more weight than it did before.

"What am I missing?"

Thania folds her arms across her chest.

"I am forbidden from sharing those details with you."

A dry laugh escapes me.

"There it is again."

Her eyebrow lifts.

"I'm beginning to think the Tribunal survives entirely on complicated answers and forbidden information."

Jamey's voice reaches me from behind. "Efficient business model."

Alec releases a quiet breath beside him.

The corner of Thania's mouth twitches before control returns.

"I can tell you this."

Her gaze flicks toward Daniel before finding mine again.

"You are the Living Scripture."

"I gathered that from all the kneeling."

Jamey disguises a laugh as a cough.

Thania ignores him.

"If you truly want answers, I suggest you visit the Sepulcher of Echoes."

Whatever amusement remained inside me disappears.

"The Sepulcher of Echoes sounds incredibly welcoming."

"It has never claimed to be."

At least someone finally gives me a straightforward answer.

Thania moves away from the chair before pausing several steps later.

"There is something else you should understand."

I wait for her to continue.

"Every attempt to decipher the divine symbols and inscriptions within the Sepulcher has failed."

My attention sharpens.

"Then why send me there?"

Her eyes hold mine.

"Those symbols answer only to divine will."

The words sink into me.

Divine will.

My gaze drops briefly toward my hands, where gold continues moving faintly beneath my skin.

When I look up again, Thania has already started toward Daniel and the others.

"Thania."

She stops walking.

"What exactly is divine will?"

Her head turns slightly.

For one suspended moment, an answer seems possible.

Then she continues walking.

Apparently, straightforward answers have reached their daily limit.

I turn toward my teammates.

Jamey raises both hands. "For the record, visiting a place called the Sepulcher of Echoes sounds like an excellent way to become one of the echoes."

Alec looks at him.

"Your objection has been recorded."

"Excellent. Please carve it somewhere visible when this goes horribly wrong."

A laugh threatens despite the unease pressing through me.

Thania's words remain stronger.

Those symbols answer only to divine will.

We came here looking for answers, and now those answers are waiting inside a place whose secrets have resisted everyone sent before us.

My gaze moves across the people who have somehow become willing participants in every impossible turn my life takes.

Then I look toward the door.

"What the hell are we about to walk into?"

Alec strides over and presses a shot of whiskey into my hand without saying a word.

I throw it back in one gulp.

The burn tears down my throat and spreads through my chest like liquid fire, sharpening my senses enough to push through the exhaustion.

The relief lasts seconds.

Beneath my skin, the glyphs continue their quiet rhythm.

Their light remains dormant, their power strangely calm, yet something about them feels different. A faint awareness moves through the Living Scripture, almost as though it has turned its attention toward a sound beyond my reach.

I shift beneath the sensation.

Whatever the Scripture hears, it isn't sharing.

Apparently, mysterious silence is contagious.

Alec nudges me toward the sofa and catches my hand as he lowers himself beside me. His fingers close around mine, warm and reassuring.

"Given everything that's happened these past two weeks," he says quietly, "we should call Master. He needs to know."

Master Dan.

Five decades spent confronting the supernatural have given him more experience than the rest of us combined. He has faced possessions, entities, and things most people would spend their entire lives convincing themselves could never exist.

Right now, experience sounds considerably better than another cryptic answer.

I release a slow breath, and the others begin moving closer.

"Yeah. Things are getting too complicated. We need someone who can guide us through this. Someone who might actually understand what the hell is happening."

Jamey already has his phone in his hand.

Master's favorite wastes little time when the opportunity arises to remind everyone why he holds the title.

The call lasts less than a minute.

Jamey lowers the phone and looks at us.

"Master will meet us at Halo. Ten a.m."

Halo.

The name carries its own history.

Hidden within the heart of Saint Helena's CBD, the sanctuary exists among ordinary buildings and ordinary lives, concealed by the simplicity surrounding it.

We leave the cars in an open lot and continue on foot.

The city moves around us as we walk, filled with engines, footsteps, conversations, and people rushing toward destinations that probably involve considerably fewer supernatural tribunals.

We reach the stairway bridge crossing above the main road.

Alec stiffens beside me.

Something changes in the air.

The sensation reaches me a heartbeat later, a faint distortion brushing across my skin.

Alec disappears from my side.

My head snaps toward the empty space.

Light shifts where he stood, bending for barely a second before snapping back into place.

Pedestrians continue walking around us.

A woman passes with her attention fixed on her phone. Two men continue their conversation several steps ahead. Traffic surges beneath the bridge while the entire city carries on without realizing something impossible has just happened among them.

Our group stops.

We saw it.

My gaze follows the disturbance toward the street below.

Alec is already there.

A little boy stands dangerously close to the road, his small body swaying as one foot moves toward the rushing traffic.

Alec reaches him first.

One instant leaves the child leaning toward the street.

The next places him securely inside Alec's arms.

A car tears past the exact place the boy would have reached.

My breath catches.

Alec draws the child against his chest while the boy stares up at him, wide-eyed and completely unaware of how close the world came to changing forever.

We hurry down toward them.

The boy is still awake when we reach the bottom, though his wide eyes have lost their focus.

His head rolls against Alec's chest.

"Hey, little man."

Alec gives him a gentle shake.

The boy's eyelids flutter once before closing, and his entire body goes slack.

Alec's arms tighten around him.

Something inside me responds.

A sharp pulse presses behind my eyes as one of the Living Glyphs flashes beneath my skin.

The familiar touch of Discernment follows immediately.

I stop moving.

The glyph fades, though the sensation remains, pulling my attention toward the child with enough force to tighten my stomach.

Alec looks at me. "What is it?"

I move closer.

The boy looks ordinary.

Small face. Closed eyes. One hand hanging loosely against Alec's arm.

Yet the Living Scripture disagrees.

A strange pressure brushes through me when I look at him, like something beneath that innocent face has become aware that I am looking back.

My skin prickles.

Alec's speed didn't trigger the glyph.

The boy did.

"Alec." My voice sharpens. "How fast can you get him to Master Dan?"

His frown deepens. "A minute or two at most. Why?"

Eric steps closer, and the moment his gaze reaches the child, the muscles across his jaw tighten.

"Something feels wrong."

I keep watching the boy.

"Something is wrong."

The child's fingers twitch.

Once.

Alec sees it.

So does Eric.

"Go," I tell him.

Alec disappears.

Wind slams into us hard enough to whip my hair across my face. Samantha throws an arm up while Jamey stumbles sideways, swearing as the empty space Alec occupied shimmers for barely a second.

Then even that disappears.

I stare after him.

Apparently, we're adding human lightning bolt to the growing list of things Alec can do.

We run the remaining distance toward Halo.

By the time we reach Master Dan's office, my lungs are burning and Alec is already inside.

Master stands beside the unconscious boy.

His sleeves have been pushed back, and one hand hovers above the child's chest while two fingers of the other trace a symbol through the air.

Alec stands several steps away.

That worries me immediately.

Alec doesn't step away from people he thinks need protecting.

A faint shimmer forms around the boy.

Master completes the final movement, and the shimmer closes around the child's body like a transparent second skin.

"A Seal," Samantha murmurs.

Master gives a slight nod.

His eyes remain on the child.

Whatever is hiding beneath that small, fragile body now has nowhere to go.

We gather around him.

The room becomes painfully quiet.

I hear Alec breathing beside me.

Jamey's shoe scrapes once against the floor.

Eric shifts closer to my shoulder.

Then the boy convulses.

His back arches violently against the Seal.

Alec lunges forward.

Master's arm shoots across his path.

"Stay there."

Alec freezes.

The boy jerks again.

His fingers claw against empty air while his small body twists beneath a force we cannot see.

Then his mouth opens.

Black foam spills over his lips.

Jamey recoils. "Oh, that is deeply unpleasant."

The smell reaches us.

My stomach turns.

Rot thickens the air, carrying the sickening impression of something ancient being dragged into daylight after centuries underground.

Samantha covers her mouth.

Eric pulls me half a step behind him.

I immediately move back beside him.

The boy's body jerks again.

His eyes open.

Darkness fills them completely.

Every trace of color disappears beneath two hollow depths staring directly at us.

Alec takes one step backward.

Jamey takes two.

Master Dan leans closer.

I stare at him.

There is curiosity in his eyes.

Actual curiosity.

"Well now," he murmurs. "And who might you be, hiding in there?"

Apparently, five decades of deliverance eventually turns horrifying possession into an interesting Tuesday.

The child's mouth stretches wider.

A wet, guttural sound crawls from his throat as the black foam begins retreating across his lips, disappearing with unnatural speed.

Then a voice enters the room.

His mouth remains open.

His lips never move.

The voice continues anyway.

Low syllables scrape through the air, carrying a language I have never heard before.

Alec looks toward Master.

Samantha frowns.

Jamey's usual humor disappears.

Something moves through the Living Scripture.

Gold flickers beneath my skin.

The strange syllables reach me again.

This time, meaning comes with them.

My fingers tighten around Eric's hand.

That cannot be right.

The entity speaks again.

I understand every word.

Master Dan leans closer before casting us a sideways glance.

"Anyone understand our guest? My demonic vocabulary appears to be lacking."

I tug at the sleeve of his Changshan.

"Master, I understand him."

His head turns sharply.

"You understand that?"

"I think so." I swallow and listen again. "The meaning is strange. He's speaking in riddles."

Master's brow rises.

"Then stop keeping an old man in suspense and translate."

I concentrate.

The sounds remain foreign to my ears while their meaning unfolds somewhere deeper inside me.

"Find the one who knows it all... to show the one that needs it. Guide him to his place of birth... to uncover the Holy secret."

The voice stops.

Silence stretches through the office.

Then it begins again.

The same words move through the room with exactly the same cadence.

A third repetition follows.

Then the voice disappears.

Jamey stares at the child.

"That sounded extremely reassuring."

His face suggests he would rather wrestle whatever is inside the boy than believe his own sentence.

Samantha remains near Master, studying the child.

"The message sounds like guidance," she says. "He's directing us toward someone who knows something we need."

Eric's gaze narrows.

"That leaves one problem."

Samantha slowly looks toward him.

"Why would something hiding inside this child want to help us?"

Her question hangs unanswered.

Her question hangs unanswered as a charged silence fills the room, every person watching the child inside Master's Seal.

A faint trace of black appears around his feet.

Alec moves forward instinctively, but Master raises one hand. "Stay where you are."

Black ash curls around the boy's ankles and begins climbing, consuming his small frame as though something is erasing him from the world. His legs disappear first, followed by his waist and chest as the decay gathers speed.

Samantha's hand rises toward her mouth while Jamey stares without blinking. Eric shifts closer to me, his shoulder brushing mine, but my attention remains fixed on the boy.

The darkness reaches his face.

A single tear slips from one hollow eye.

My breath catches as the tiny drop travels slowly down his cheek, leaving one impossible trace of sorrow across a face already surrendering to ash.

For several seconds, everything seems to slow around it.

The tear reaches his jaw as his remaining features collapse into darkness. Black dust hangs inside the Seal before drifting toward the floor, leaving an empty space where a little boy had been moments earlier.

Nobody in the room seems willing to disturb the silence.

Master Dan releases a slow breath.

Heat suddenly curls around the glyph on my shoulder, and my hand flies toward it as the Living Scripture pulses beneath my palm. A second pulse follows the first before everything inside me becomes strangely quiet.

My breathing slows as an awareness moves through me.

The room hasn't changed. Master remains beside the Seal, my teammates remain around me, and the ash still covers the floor.

Yet something feels impossibly close.

The sensation carries a vastness my mind struggles to contain, reaching toward me from somewhere far beyond the walls surrounding us. For one suspended moment, the Living Scripture seems to turn toward it.

Something turns back.

A chill races across my skin.

The connection disappears almost immediately, leaving my fingers pressed against the glyph and one terrible certainty lodged inside me.

Whatever I felt knew I was here.

Alec's attention shifts toward me. "Max, what happened?"

"I'm fine."

The answer comes quickly enough for Eric's eyes to narrow.

I lower my hand from the glyph. "Something reacted to me."

Master turns toward me. "The Scripture?"

I nod. "It felt like something was looking through it."

His expression changes slightly, though whatever thought passes through his mind remains his own.

Wonderful. Apparently, cryptic expressions are contagious too.

Master dismisses the Seal with a movement of his hand and lowers himself into the nearest chair. "I'm getting too old for dramatic visitors."

Jamey glances toward the ash scattered across the floor. "He could've used the door."

Master gives him a tired look. "Thank you, Jamey. Your contribution remains invaluable."

"That's why you keep me around."

Alec's mouth twitches while Samantha shakes her head, and the brief interruption loosens something inside the room before Master's expression becomes serious again.

He gestures toward the vacant chairs. "Come and sit. I want to know everything that has happened."

We take our places around him, though our attention keeps returning to the dark traces scattered across the floor. The boy may be gone, but the image of that tear refuses to leave with him.

Eric breaks the silence first. "I think the tear is bothering us most, Master."

Master leans back and rubs slowly at his temple while studying the ash. "A tear changes the question."

Alec's gaze moves toward him. "What do you mean?"

Master considers his answer before speaking.

"Grief requires something to grieve."

The words sink into the room.

Master's attention moves across our faces. "Whatever occupied that child carried something with it. Memory, sorrow, perhaps even purpose."

Alec looks toward the remains. "I didn't think demons or dark spirits were capable of that."

Master's hand stops against his temple.

His expression becomes unreadable.

"Perhaps you should reconsider what you believe you met."

The silence returns, heavier than before.

My gaze falls toward the ash while every piece of the encounter begins circling through my thoughts. The message led us somewhere. The tear carried grief. The presence that touched the Living Scripture knew I was there.

Whatever came through that child had a purpose.

And we still have no idea what it was.

After Chapter 11

Well... that raised more questions than it answered.

A few details in this chapter may seem small now.

Remember them.

They won't stay small forever.

Thank you for continuing this journey with me and for following the mystery wherever it leads.

Chapter 12 awaits.

And apparently, so do more questions.
