It's finally here, the closing chapter of Arc 1. I want to start by sincerely apologizing for the long wait. Life, edits, divine flames, and a little chaos got in the way. But we made it.
This chapter holds more than just an ending. It's the culmination of everything Max and Seth have fought for. A moment of peace. A vow. A whisper of what's to come.
As this is my first web novel, I'd love to hear your thoughts. What moved you? What can I improve? Your feedback means more than you know and will help me grow as I continue this journey into Arc 2.
Thank you for walking this path with me.
Now... let the final light of Arc 1 unfold.
--------------------------------------------------
I look at the Hanged Man and smile.
Whatever he sees changes something in his expression. His attention drops to the gold and silver moving beneath my skin before shifting towards the weapon still clenched in his hand.
The black glyphs carved across its crooked surface flare as though trying to answer what moves through me.
I cross the distance before he can retreat and close my fingers around the weapon. Power surges against my palm with the same imitation of divinity that brought the Sable Choir onto the estate, except this time I can feel exactly what is wrong with it.
Gold moves through my hand as silver follows, their currents passing through each other without the violent collision my body has learned to expect.
A crack splits beneath my fingers and races through the black glyphs before the Hanged Man can pull the weapon free. Fractures spread across its surface as gold and silver strip through the copied markings until the weapon breaks apart in my hand.
Black fragments scatter between us and crumble before reaching the ground.
The Hanged Man stares at my empty palm.
I look down at it with him.
Well. That's new.
He moves before I can decide what to do with that information, turning towards the Sable Choir and cutting across the estate with none of the measured confidence he carried into every moment before this one.
I let him run because a strange pressure has begun beneath my skin.
At first, I think the Flame and Breath are building again, but neither surges against the other. Gold continues moving beside silver while the pressure reaches deeper, passing through places neither power has touched before.
My heartbeat changes, and the world changes with it.
Smoke hangs above the estate, yet I can see every current disturbing it. Weapons strike behind me, boots grind against broken stone and someone several meters away is breathing too quickly. Every sensation reaches me with impossible clarity without overwhelming the others.
Then I realize I am no longer afraid.
I remember fear. I carried it into the Forgotten Quarter, felt it when Seth stopped breathing and tasted it when the blade entered my chest, but I cannot find it inside me now.
Understanding follows the pressure moving deeper.
The Rewriting has begun.
It doesn't tear through me at once. Living characters spread beneath my skin as the first stage moves through my body, reaching every damaged place until pain remains within my awareness without carrying the same authority over me.
The next change reaches my mind.
Every sound, movement and pulse of power across the estate separates itself from the chaos. Alec's lightning cuts through the distance while Jamey's power shifts against the barriers around us. The Sable Choir circles above the battlefield, and the Hanged Man disappears among them.
I know where every one of them is.
My awareness finds Seth just as easily.
He remains where Alec left him, and seeing his body reaches somewhere the loss of fear cannot touch. Grief moves through me with enough force to hurt, but it no longer drags everything else beneath it.
That difference frightens me more than the grief itself.
The pressure reaches my heart.
Alec's fury, Jamey's faith and Eric's devotion remain with everything we have survived together. So do the years I lost with Seth and every moment we managed to steal back.
Love remains with the grief.
The Rewriting reaches through both without destroying them, changing the distance between what I feel and how deeply I can enter it.
Then Living Scripture spreads further across my arms, and I understand what the next stage has reached.
My humanity.
I should panic.
Instead, I watch gold and silver travel beneath my skin with a calm that feels more dangerous than fear ever did.
Minutes ago, Seth's death broke me badly enough that I screamed until my throat tore and begged Alec and Jamey to give him back. That grief still exists, but when I look towards him now, the pain reaches me without consuming everything around it.
I know that I love him with absolute certainty.
The certainty feels stronger than the emotion attached to it.
Before I can examine what that means, pressure builds beneath my skin and pushes outward. Golden particles lift from my arms and spread through the air, suspending themselves several meters around me.
I raise my hand and watch them move between my fingers.
Wonder reaches me faintly enough that I have to search for it.
Having to search bothers me more.
Silver washes across my eyes as lines of scripture form within them, sharpening the estate until details that should be impossible become clear. Cracks spread through stone in patterns I couldn't see before, smoke separates into individual currents above the battlefield and damaged branches tremble beneath the weight of snow.
Then reality comes apart.
The ground beneath my feet separates into thousands of translucent pieces.
More appear wherever I look, climbing through broken stone, trees and the fractured lake before continuing into the sky. Each piece connects perfectly to another, forming a structure too vast for my altered sight to find its end.
Light moves through them in thin currents, carrying patterns I have never studied and symbols I have never learned.
I understand them anyway.
Concern reaches me where fear should have been.
When I lift my hand, one of the translucent pieces rises with it and separates from the pattern surrounding it.
My breath catches.
The reaction is small, but it is mine, and I hold onto it while the piece hovers above my palm.
The Rewriting has changed more than my body.
I can see how the world is put together, and apparently seeing it isn't the worst part.
I close my fingers around the piece.
Reality shifts beneath my feet.
Oh.
That cannot possibly be good.
The thought sounds enough like me that I almost smile.
Cold still grips the estate as Alec's storm begins to weaken, and one piece beneath the snow burns brighter than those surrounding it. Its edges tremble where it sits slightly out of alignment with the pattern around it.
I crouch and press my fingers against it.
Heat moves through my hand as the piece shifts into place. Frost retreats from my touch and spreads outward in a widening circle, collapsing snow into water until dark earth and broken stone emerge beneath the steam.
The unnatural cold disappears.
Alec stares at the ground while I stare at my fingers.
"Okay."
Jamey's voice reaches me from behind him.
"I'm going to need a slightly bigger word than okay."
The beginning of a laugh catches inside me. Jamey has dragged one out of me in situations where laughter had absolutely no business happening, but this one fades before it reaches my mouth.
I miss it.
At least that feeling comes through clearly.
Another fracture catches my attention before I can hold onto it.
Water forces itself through a widening break along the edge of the lake, where several translucent pieces sit out of alignment.
Touching reality once should have convinced me that doing it again is a terrible idea. Apparently, whatever the Rewriting has done to my fear has made sensible hesitation considerably harder to find.
I crouch beside the fracture and press two fingers against one of the displaced pieces.
It moves beneath my touch, drawing those around it back into alignment until the fracture closes. Water surges against the repaired edge and holds.
I remain there for a moment, staring through the surface at the pattern continuing beneath the lake.
I didn't heal the ground.
I corrected it.
Movement pulls my attention away before I can examine the difference.
The Hanged Man has broken from the Sable Choir and is coming towards me. Whatever caution sent him running earlier has lost its argument with opportunity, and he closes the distance while my attention remains on the translucent piece hovering above my other hand.
I watch him approach without the slightest change in my heartbeat.
That disturbs me enough to raise my free hand.
The pieces between us shift.
His next step begins normally, but his foot never reaches the ground. Momentum carries his body forward while the distance between us remains unchanged, leaving him suspended halfway through the movement.
He tries again, forcing his weight forward while every muscle responds exactly as it should.
His body moves.
The distance doesn't.
His eyes drop towards the empty space beneath his foot before snapping back to mine, and for the first time since he arrived, his composure breaks.
Earlier, I would have enjoyed that.
Now I study him.
Jamey makes a strangled sound behind me. "Max."
"I know."
"I'm becoming increasingly concerned that you don't."
The beginning of a laugh catches inside me before fading again.
I lower my hand, allowing the pieces to return to their previous positions. The Hanged Man's suspended foot strikes the ground, and his own momentum nearly sends him stumbling forward before he catches himself.
He steps backwards and stays there.
I turn my other hand and let the piece hovering above my palm slip back into the structure surrounding us.
Thousands remain within my sight.
Every one of them can be touched.
Understanding that should terrify me far more than it does.
Another damaged pattern catches my attention above us, where Alec's storm has spread across clouds already weakened by everything that happened over the estate. Lightning tears through them in branching strikes, and my altered sight follows one until its brilliant length separates into hundreds of translucent pieces.
I can see what holds them together.
Curiosity moves faster than caution.
I reach towards the bolt, and one translucent piece sharpens within the pattern until, impossibly, its edge comes within reach without the lightning itself changing size or position.
"Max."
Alec's warning comes too late.
I close my fingers around it.
The bolt stops halfway through its descent, hanging white-blue across the sky while every face around me lifts towards it.
I pull.
The structure holding the lightning together changes, and white-blue current races down the path between the bolt and the piece in my hand until electricity twists above my palm.
"Max, put that back."
I glance at him before returning my attention to the lightning twisting above my hand.
Normally, I would tell him to relax, make a terrible comment about knowing exactly what I'm doing and hope he never discovers that I absolutely don't.
The words never come.
"I was planning to."
My voice sounds quieter than I expect.
Alec continues staring at me while I turn my palm towards the sky and release the piece.
Lightning erupts across the clouds.
White-blue branches multiply overhead as thunder shakes the estate. Several fighters duck beneath the sound while I remain where I am, watching the structure around me respond.
The first bolt descends and curves away before reaching me. Another divides around the golden particles suspended nearby, while a third passes my shoulder and tears back into the clouds.
I lower my hand slowly.
The pattern shifts with it.
Alec sees what I see only through its effect.
The lightning isn't following me.
I changed the space through which it could move.
The distinction matters.
My gaze travels through the translucent structure covering the estate, following it through earth, water and sky until the pieces become too numerous to separate. Everything occupies a place within the pattern, connected to what surrounds it in ways I somehow understand without knowing how I learned to see them.
Scripture races across my vision as the Rewriting moves deeper.
I should be terrified by how much of creation has suddenly become visible to me.
I know that.
Finding the fear is becoming harder.
My attention returns to Seth.
He lies where Alec left him.
My altered sight shows me the ground supporting his body, the air moving around him and faint traces of power clinging to his clothes. The translucent structure continues around him as clearly as it does everywhere else.
His chest remains still.
Grief reaches me hard enough to catch my breath, and my hand closes against my chest as the sight of him tears through the distance the Rewriting has placed between me and what I feel.
For one terrible moment, the pain returns exactly as I remember it.
I almost welcome it.
Hurting this badly means there is still enough of me left to hurt.
Then the grief begins to retreat.
"Don't."
My eyes remain on Seth as the pain slips somewhere I can still reach without being able to enter it fully.
I know what he means to me. I remember what losing him did to me, and every memory carries the certainty that I love him.
The feeling no longer reaches as far as the certainty.
I hate that.
This time, the emotion arrives without hesitation, sharp enough that I hold onto it while the Rewriting continues beneath my skin.
My attention shifts towards the girl beside him.
Her silver-gold hair catches the light as she kneels near Seth, her protector remaining close beside her. She watched when the Flame and Breath stopped colliding inside me, and something in her expression told me then that she understood more than I did.
My altered sight finally shows me why.
White light moves deep within her, untouched by the translucent structure surrounding everything else. The pieces continue around it without containing it, and every pattern my sight tries to follow disappears into the brightness.
I start towards her.
Her protector steps into my path before I reach Seth. His attention passes over the scripture covering my skin before returning to my face.
"Move."
The girl reaches for his arm before either of us can discover how stubborn he intends to be. He looks back at her, receives the smallest movement of her head and steps aside.
I pass him.
Seth is close enough now that I don't need my altered sight to see the stillness of his chest.
I look at the girl.
"Give him back to me."
Her expression remains calm.
"I don't have the authority to do that, Max."
The white presence inside her moves.
My gaze drops to Seth before returning to her.
"I don't know how much of me this Rewriting intends to change."
My voice trembles.
I let it.
"It has already touched my fear. It's changing my grief, and I can feel what it's doing every time I reach for something that used to come naturally."
A thin fracture appears in the air between us, spreading with a sharp crack as several translucent pieces pull out of alignment.
I glance towards it.
I didn't touch them.
"If it takes my hope, my love or whatever else makes me human, I can't stop it yet."
My eyes return to Seth.
"But I will not lose him with them."
The fracture spreads wider. This time, I understand enough to know that I am affecting it even though my hands remain at my sides.
When I look back, the girl is watching me differently.
White light begins moving beneath her skin.
Hope rises before the Rewriting can distance me from it, sudden enough that my breath catches.
I hold onto the feeling.
"Please."
The word comes more easily than I expect.
Her protector stiffens beside us when scripture races across my vision and my altered sight follows the white presence inside her as far as it can.
"I wasn't asking you."
I keep my attention on the girl.
"I'm speaking to the First Breath."
The white light inside her brightens.
"You know why I'm asking You to bring him back."
The First Breath answers.
White light breaks from the girl's chest, bright enough that I throw an arm across my eyes as the estate disappears beneath it. My altered sight cannot find translucent edges within the brightness. It passes through the structure surrounding us without disturbing a single piece.
When I lower my arm, the light is already crossing the estate towards Seth.
It reaches his chest and curves around his body while the Flame and Breath beneath my skin quiet until their movement almost disappears.
I hold my breath as the white light circles him once, draws tighter on the second pass and closes over his heart on the third.
My altered sight gives me nothing. The brightness refuses to separate into pieces, leaving me unable to follow what it is doing inside him.
I take a step towards him.
"Seth?"
The light draws closer around his body while my hands curl at my sides. Being forced to stand here and do nothing sends frustration through me with enough force that I almost welcome it.
The white light contracts.
Seth's body lifts from the broken ground as air rushes into his lungs.
His chest rises.
Relief tears through whatever distance the Rewriting has created inside me, and my knees almost give as his name leaves me on a broken breath.
Seth breathes again.
This time, I don't have to search for what I feel.
The First Breath remains around him for several heartbeats before unwinding from his body and returning towards the girl. Her protector catches her as the light passes back into her chest, taking her weight when her knees buckle and lowering her carefully to the ground.
My attention has already returned to Seth.
His chest rises again, followed by the smallest movement of his fingers against the broken earth.
I start towards him.
A low sound rolls across the estate before I reach him.
My attention snaps upwards.
The Sable Choir moves across the darkened sky.
Through my altered sight, their bodies sit wrong within the structure surrounding them. Translucent pieces strain wherever they pass, separating along damaged edges before forcing themselves together again.
I understand what I am seeing.
They tore their way into this place.
The path remains.
I follow the damage towards a section of sky where the pieces have never returned to their proper positions. Most have drawn close enough to hide the opening from ordinary sight, but the fracture continues beneath them like a wound that closed badly.
One piece near the center catches my attention.
I reach towards it, and the damaged piece sharpens within my altered sight until its edge becomes accessible to my hand.
I close my fingers around it.
The damaged structure reacts.
Pieces tear apart across the sky as the path reopens along the same fracture the Choir created when they entered. Darkness spreads between its edges, and the figures circling above us break formation.
That gets their attention.
One dives towards me.
Black energy gathers around its hands before tearing across the estate, but I throw up one hand as gold erupts from beneath my skin and crashes into the attack before it reaches me. Heat crashes through the darkness while I keep my grip on the piece.
The fracture widens.
Wind tears across the estate as the damaged path pulls against everything connected to it, catching the nearest member of the Choir before it can turn away. Its wings drive forward while its body jerks backwards towards the opening.
I stare at the piece in my hand.
They didn't only leave the path behind.
They left themselves connected to it.
I pull.
The first member of the Choir disappears through the fracture.
The others scatter.
Several climb higher while two break towards opposite ends of the estate, but thin distortions trail behind each of them, stretching back towards the opening they forced into creation.
I can see every one.
My fingers tighten around the piece.
The damaged path strains beneath my grip, and the connections snap taut.
The Choir fights.
Wings hammer against the air while black energy tears across the sky, striking the estate hard enough to throw stone and earth into the air. The Living Flame surges around me as I brace against the force and refuse to release the piece.
Another figure is dragged backwards.
Then another.
The fracture takes them through the same path they used to enter, one after another, until the last set of wings disappears into the darkness.
Silence reaches the sky before it reaches the estate.
I loosen my grip.
The translucent piece slips from my fingers and returns to its place as the damaged structure begins drawing together again.
Movement beyond the closing fracture catches my attention.
The Hanged Man is running.
A laugh almost escapes me.
After everything he has done, apparently fleeing remains an acceptable strategy when he's the one in danger.
I lift my hand towards him.
The air tears open at his side before I can reach anything.
My altered sight changes with it.
The translucent pieces surrounding the new rift twist out of shape, stretching towards a darkness I cannot see through. I reach for the nearest one, but its edge slips away before my fingers can close around it.
This isn't what the Choir did.
The Hanged Man stops running.
A massive shadowed hand reaches through the opening and closes around him.
He doesn't fight it.
That bothers me enough that I forget the rift for a moment.
His head turns.
Our eyes meet across the estate.
Whatever sent him running from me has disappeared from his face, leaving a calm I don't understand as the hand begins drawing him backwards.
I reach again.
The pieces distort beneath my fingers and disappear into the darkness before I can hold them.
The Hanged Man keeps his eyes on mine until the rift takes him.
It closes behind him.
I remain where I am as the surrounding pieces return to position, erasing every trace of the opening from the air.
Whatever took him exists somewhere my altered sight cannot follow.
A snarl behind me pulls my attention back to the estate.
I turn as one of the remaining fallen angels launches across the broken ground, whatever human shape it once preferred already giving way. Its fingers lengthen into black claws while its lips pull back from rows of sharpened teeth.
At least this problem is considerably easier to understand.
It reaches me fast enough that I barely catch its wrist before the claws reach my throat. I twist hard, drag it past me and drive my fist into its ribs with enough force to lift it from the ground.
It crashes through the remains of a stone wall.
Another hits me from the side before I can see where the first lands.
Claws tear across my upper arm as its weight drives me into the broken earth. Its face changes above mine, jaw stretching wider while those teeth snap close enough to my cheek that its breath washes across my skin.
"Absolutely not."
I slam my forehead into its face, catch it by the throat when it recoils and roll hard enough to reverse our positions. My fist drives its head into the ground, cracking the stone beneath it before a second strike leaves it still.
Wings beat above me.
I throw myself aside as another fallen angel drops from the sky, its claws carving through the ground where my chest had been a heartbeat earlier.
Pain burns through my arm when I push myself upright. Blood has already soaked through the torn fabric, but the wound beneath it begins closing before I can properly inspect the damage.
The fallen angel crouches several meters away, wings spread behind it and teeth exposed as it prepares to come again.
I look at my arm.
"You made me bleed."
Its answer is a growl.
Anger rises before I have to search for it, hot and immediate enough that relief follows almost as quickly.
The Rewriting hasn't taken that from me yet.
I charge before the creature can launch itself again.
It meets me halfway, claws tearing across my shoulder as I drive both hands into its chest and carry it backwards through the remains of the courtyard. Broken furniture gives way beneath us before its back slams into one of the damaged pillars hard enough to crack the stone.
Its teeth snap towards my throat.
I wrench my head aside, grab a fistful of its hair and drive its face into the pillar hard enough to widen the fracture behind it. The creature twists beneath my grip and rakes its claws across my side, forcing me back before it throws itself at me again.
I catch it by the throat, and its own momentum carries us several steps before I use the charge to drive it into the broken stone.
The impact shakes the ground beneath us. When the creature tries to rise, I hit it again and leave it there.
A scream tears through the courtyard.
I turn towards the last two fallen angels as they come together, one racing across the ground while the other climbs above me with its wings beating hard enough to scatter dust and fragments of stone.
My altered sight catches the movement of the translucent structure around them. Pieces shift as their bodies pass through the space between us, revealing how deeply their presence strains what surrounds them without telling me where the next claws or teeth will come from.
I still have to do that part myself.
The first fallen angel lunges low.
I step into it, catch one arm and drive my shoulder into its chest before using its momentum to throw it across my body. It hits the ground hard enough to skid through the rubble, but the second is already dropping towards me.
Claws rake across my back before I can clear them completely.
I stumble forward, catch myself and turn as the creature lands.
"I'm getting tired of that."
It bares its teeth.
"Yes, very frightening."
The first creature is already climbing back to its feet behind me.
I grab the broken length of timber beside my boot and swing it into the fallen angel's face as it charges. The wood shatters on impact, leaving half of it in my hands while the creature staggers sideways.
I stare at what remains.
"Useless."
I throw it away and hit the creature with my fist instead.
That works considerably better.
It crashes into its companion, sending both across the broken courtyard. One recovers quickly enough to come at me again, wings driving it forward while its claws reach for my face.
I duck beneath them and drive my fist into its stomach before straightening with enough force to send it over my shoulder. It strikes the ground behind me and rolls through the rubble.
The other fallen angel reaches me before I can turn.
Its claws close around my forearm while its teeth snap towards my throat, and I jam my free hand beneath its jaw before they reach me. For several seconds we remain locked together, its strength driving me backwards while my boots scrape across fractured stone.
Gold burns beneath my skin.
Heat surges through my arm and erupts between us.
The fallen angel screams as the Living Flame throws it backwards, giving me enough room to follow.
I don't waste it.
My fist catches its jaw before it can recover. The next strike drives it backwards, and the third sends it into the remains of the wall hard enough that the stone collapses around it.
The last creature rises behind me.
I hear the scrape of claws against stone and turn before it reaches me.
The creature hesitates long enough for me to cross the distance and drive my fist into its chest.
The fallen angel screams as Living Flame erupts through my arm and throws it backwards, giving me enough room to follow.
I stay where I am for several breaths, waiting for claws, wings, teeth or another creature stupid enough to try.
Nothing moves.
Around me, the estate finally goes quiet.
I descend through the remaining golden particles and turn towards Seth.
He is awake.
Everything inside me stops as I find him sitting upright with Alec beside him, one hand pressed against the ground while he looks directly at me.
The distance between us suddenly feels enormous, and I cross it before thought catches up with the decision.
Seth pushes himself to his feet as I approach. He is pale, and his movements carry the stiffness of someone whose body has only just remembered how to live, but his eyes remain fixed on mine.
Blue.
Alive.
Relief reaches me, but the emotion stops before it can become what it should.
I know how much his life means to me. I know what I felt while his heart remained still beneath my hands and what I was prepared to become rather than lose him.
Knowing it is easier than feeling it now.
Silver shifts beneath my skin as the distance between us closes, moving alongside the gold while both currents remain distinct. The strain of carrying them together tightens through me, and Seth's gaze drops briefly towards the silver before returning to my face.
"Max."
His voice should reach deeper than it does.
I remember every other time he said my name and the feelings that once came with it, but memory has become easier to access than emotion.
"The Rewriting changed something."
Seth comes closer.
"I know."
I search his face for the fear or uncertainty that would make sense after everything he has witnessed. Instead, I find pain in his eyes, and even that reaches me through a distance that wasn't there before.
"I love you." The certainty comes without effort. "I remember what losing you did to me. I remember begging you to wake up, and I know exactly what seeing you alive should mean."
My throat tightens as I look at him, giving me one small physical response the Rewriting hasn't taken beyond my reach.
"But remembering it and feeling it aren't the same anymore."
Pain moves across Seth's face, and this time I feel enough of my own answer to it that the distance inside me shifts.
He steps towards me.
I remain where I am as his arms close around me.
For several seconds, my body remains stiff against his because I remember exactly what I should do and cannot find the instinct to do it.
Then my hand closes against the back of his shirt.
The movement is conscious. I remember holding him before, understand why I should do it now and reproduce the action because the memory tells me it belongs here.
Seth exhales against my hair.
Silver shifts beneath my skin with the sound, moving closer to the surface as gold rises alongside it. The two currents remain separate, but the pressure inside me increases enough that my fingers tighten against Seth's shirt.
He feels it.
"It's still inside you."
"Yes."
Seth pulls back far enough to look at me.
"Give it back."
The answer comes before I consider it.
"No."
Seth goes still.
I understand his surprise, although I don't share it. The Breath has survived inside me alongside the Flame, and whatever the Rewriting has made of my body is capable of carrying both.
Returning it would make me less than I am now.
The thought arrives with perfect clarity.
Seth studies me for several seconds before his hand rises to my cheek.
"Max."
"You already said my name."
"And you usually get annoyed when I repeat myself."
"I remember."
His thumb moves gently across my cheek.
"That's not what I said."
I look at him.
Seth holds my gaze.
"You remember being irritated. You remember laughing at me. You remember loving me."
His voice remains quiet.
"What do you feel?"
I search because he expects an answer.
Love exists somewhere beneath everything the Rewriting has changed. Irritation is easier to locate, although even that feels distant. Fear barely registers at all.
"Enough."
Pain moves through his expression.
"That's not you."
"It is now."
His hand remains against my cheek.
"I don't believe that."
A trace of irritation reaches me.
"That sounds like your problem."
This time Seth does laugh, although the sound breaks almost immediately beneath everything he has just survived.
I frown at him.
"Why is that funny?"
"Because you are still in there."
"I am standing in front of you."
"That's not what I mean."
Irritation sharpens.
Better.
Seth sees the change in my face, but he doesn't celebrate it. His thumb moves once across my cheek before his hand stills.
"You fought for me when I couldn't fight for myself."
The words bring back Seth beneath my hands, his chest motionless while I demanded that he wake.
The memory arrives perfectly.
The grief attached to it follows more slowly.
"You refused to let me go," he continues. "I'm returning the favor."
That reaches somewhere deeper.
I dislike that it does.
Seth leans towards me slowly enough that I could stop him.
I don't.
His lips touch mine.
Memory supplies the rest immediately. I know the warmth of him, the pressure of his hand against my cheek and the way I used to respond before thought could interfere.
My body remains still.
Seth doesn't pull away.
His forehead rests against mine when the kiss ends, and his breathing moves steadily between us.
"I'm still here."
"I can see that."
"Then stop looking at me like I'm information."
Irritation flares properly this time.
"You are being incredibly annoying."
"Good."
The word nearly earns him a response I haven't had to search for.
Seth kisses me again.
This time my hand moves before memory tells it to.
My fingers slide from his shirt to the back of his neck, and I pull him closer.
The reaction catches me off guard.
So does everything that follows.
Warmth reaches me first, followed by relief sharp enough to hurt and grief that finally refuses to remain at a distance. My grip tightens as the memory of his still chest collides with the heartbeat I can feel against mine.
I break the kiss and stare at him.
Seth is breathing, his heart is beating beneath my palm, and for the first time since he opened his eyes, the facts stop behaving like facts.
My throat closes.
Silver surges beneath my skin.
I feel it gather where my hand rests against Seth's chest, responding to the rise and fall beneath my palm while the Flame remains bright within me.
The instinct to hold the silver back comes immediately.
My fingers spread against his shirt.
Seth looks down at my hand before meeting my eyes.
"Max."
"I know."
"Do you?"
I almost tell him yes.
Then his heart beats beneath my palm again.
The answer becomes harder.
I release my grip on the silver current.
The Breath leaves me with Seth's next inhale.
Silver pulls through the hand pressed against his chest, crossing between us in a rush that empties my lungs and folds me against him. Seth's breath catches as the current enters him, spreading beneath his skin before rising with his next exhale.
The strength disappears from my legs.
Seth catches me before I hit the ground, one arm locking around my waist while the other supports my head against his shoulder.
My thoughts scatter as the translucent structure surrounding the estate flickers across my vision. Gold remains beneath my skin, familiar and bright, while the place that carried silver feels abruptly empty.
I know that absence.
I felt it when Seth died.
This time his heart beats against me.
I grip his shirt and concentrate on that instead.
"I'm still here."
Seth's face comes slowly back into focus.
"Stay with me."
I tighten my fingers against him. Losing Seth once today was enough, and whatever the Rewriting tried to make of me, I refuse to disappear with the Breath.
When the dizziness finally clears, Seth keeps one arm around me as we make our way towards the others.
The estate has fallen quiet. Alec stands with Jamey and the rest of our battered group, exhaustion written across every face as they watch us approach. Caution remains beneath the relief, and after everything they witnessed, I understand why.
I find Alec first.
His gaze searches my face.
I smile.
The reaction comes naturally.
Whatever Alec sees is enough to send him across the remaining distance. Seth releases me carefully, and the moment my hand finds Alec's, he pulls me against him.
"Max... you have no idea what it means to have you back."
His tears warm my shoulder.
This time I don't have to remember what I should do. My arms close around him, and the emotion follows without requiring me to search for it.
"I'm glad to be back too, Alec. Although you might regret saying that when I rearrange the training schedule."
His laugh breaks through the tension around us.
Jamey appears beside him with one hand pressed dramatically against his chest. "Max, my darling, sweet, non-exploding Max. I'm so relieved the universe didn't trade you for another apocalypse."
My laugh joins Alec's before I have time to think about whether it should.
"Just admit you missed my dramatic flair."
"I only missed it because you outdo me."
More laughter follows as the others finally begin moving towards us. Hands find my shoulders, arms close around me and voices overlap until separating one from another becomes impossible.
I let them come.
---------------------------------------------------
We keep everyone close for another two days.
Nobody wants to regroup or strategize, and for once nothing needs to be solved before morning. We eat together, tend to the injured and sleep whenever exhaustion wins, talking when we need to and allowing silence when words become too much.
Seth stays close throughout it, while the Rewriting remains with me in ways I am still learning to understand.
Sometimes an emotion takes longer to reach me or arrives differently from the way I remember. At other times, especially with Seth and the people gathered around us, the distance disappears completely and I feel without having to remember how.
I don't know which changes will remain permanent.
For now, I feel like myself again.
Late on the second afternoon, Seth and I find a moment alone on the patio overlooking the lake. The sun has begun its descent, spreading gold across the water while I rest against the cushioned bench beside him.
He shifts beside me and produces a small blue box.
I sit upright immediately.
"Seth?"
He opens it, revealing a white-gold ring engraved with delicate red-gold glyphs around a deep blue azurite at its center.
I stare at the ring before looking at him.
"This question is long overdue, Max."
Seth turns towards me and takes my hand, his thumb brushing across my knuckles while the slightest tremor moves through his fingers.
"Will you marry me?"
Emotion reaches me before thought can interfere, love and relief rising with a happiness so immediate that tears blur my vision before I can answer.
A squeal erupts behind us.
"Oh my gosh! Everyone! Seth just proposed to Max!"
Jamey's feet pound across the wooden boards as I close my eyes.
Seth starts laughing beside me, and mine follows without effort.
"He couldn't give us thirty seconds?"
"Apparently not."
When I look at Seth again, the tears are still there.
"Yes."
His fingers tighten around mine.
"Yes?"
I laugh through the tears. "I'm marrying you, Seth."
He slides the ring onto my finger, and his breath catches when it comes to rest.
I barely have time to look at it before Seth pulls me into his arms, and I hold him just as tightly.
The others reach us moments later, bringing laughter, congratulations and more embraces than either of us can escape. Alec smiles from among them while Lady Elsa watches with quiet approval, and the twins can barely contain themselves.
When the noise finally gives me enough room, I look down at the ring before finding Seth's eyes again.
After everything that tried to take this future from us, we still have one.
---------------------------------------------------
Sunlight filters through the stained-glass windows of the church, catching golden glyphs that move gently across the glass before fading whenever I try to follow them.
Lady Elsa and her group sit with the Judicars on one side, while the warriors from the waterfall, the sect leaders, Eric's team and my own sit with Master Dan on the other.
Aleesha dances down the aisle scattering petals as she goes, then turns towards Jamey with a wink. He rolls his eyes, mouths show-off and blows her a kiss.
Samantha approaches with my bouquet and places it in my hands.
"It's time."
Our eyes meet, and I nod before curling my fingers around the stems.
My dress falls around me in layers of soft gold and white, with scripture woven through the fabric and Living glyphs moving beneath my skin. I chose to walk barefoot, and the thought of taking that first step sends a tremor through me that has nothing to do with fear.
"Ready?"
I turn towards the boy beside me. At fifteen, he is already taller than I am, with my hair and eyes that still seem too large for his growing face. His dogs wait behind us, their tails brushing against the floor.
I touch his cheek and smile.
"More than ready."
He offers me his arm, and we begin walking.
Familiar faces fill the church, people who entered my life as strangers, allies and unexpected companions before becoming the family gathered here with us.
Then I see Seth.
He stands beneath an arch of living light in a white suit threaded with silver scripture along the sleeves and collar. A faint current of Breath moves around his shoulders with each exhale, and his ocean-blue eyes remain fixed on mine.
I hold his gaze as we move closer, and the rest of the church gradually loses my attention.
After everything that separated us, Seth is waiting at the end of the aisle, and this time nothing stands between us.
I reach him.
Our vows remain unspoken.
They appear as our fingers intertwine, gold and silver glyphs forming around our joined hands before spiraling slowly upwards. Line after line writes itself into the air until the final words complete themselves above us.
The officiant steps back as the last glyph takes its place.
A soft current of air moves through the church, lifting petals from the aisle and carrying them around us while the Living Scripture beneath my skin brightens. Beyond the open windows, birds rise from the trees as Seth exhales and a faint silver current moves with his breath.
Gold rises from me while silver remains with him, the two currents moving around our joined hands without losing their distinction.
We speak the only vow that needs our voices.
"Joined in Flame, sealed in Breath."
Seth's hand comes to my cheek as his smile reaches me.
Then he kisses me.
---------------------------------------------------
We hold the reception at home.
Wildflowers cover the estate, with roses climbing above the tables and sunflowers filling every space Aleesha could convince someone to give her. Music carries across the grounds while people eat, laugh and eventually begin dancing.
Alec even tries, and we love him for the effort.
When the speeches begin, Eric raises his glass and looks between Seth and me.
"You earned this."
Three words are enough.
Later, Alexander falls asleep beneath a tree with his head against Aleesha while petals collect in his hair. My brother feeds the dogs enough wedding cake to guarantee regret for everyone involved, and Samantha catches the bouquet before Jamey catches her expression and makes the situation considerably worse.
By the time the stars appear, I have laughed enough that my face hurts.
Seth and I eventually escape to the edge of the gathering, where I settle against his side with my head on his chest. His arm closes around me while conversation and music continue behind us.
Beneath my ear, his heartbeat keeps a steady rhythm with every breath he takes.
I close my eyes and listen.
For the first time in longer than I can remember, nothing is waiting for me to fight.
I stay there with him while our family celebrates behind us and allow myself to believe that peace might last longer than a few hours.
Far from the estate, the Euphrates moves beneath the night.
Deep below the riverbed, ancient stone trembles with a movement too faint to disturb the water above.
Darkness fills the space beneath it.
For a long moment, nothing moves.
Then an eye opens.
And watches.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
From spiritual warfare to divine awakening, from broken trust to eternal bond . Thank you for standing beside Max, Seth, and their team through every trial.
This final chapter wasn't just about closure... it was about covenant.
But the vow is only the beginning.
Arc 2 will tear open what peace left behind.
New enemies will rise from the cracks of silence.
The team will grow, new warriors will join, while existing bonds are tested, deepened, or broken.
Secrets buried beneath the Euphrates will stir again... and something ancient is already watching.
The battle was never over.
It only paused for a wedding.
