Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Praise

The days that followed the presentation were a blur of congratulations and praise from Emily's colleagues. For the first time in months, she felt like she was part of the team, like she was finally earning her keep. Ethan's approval had opened doors, and Emily was determined to capitalize on it.

As she worked at her desk, Emily couldn't help but notice the change in Ethan's behavior towards her. He was still demanding, still perfectionistic, but there was a newfound respect in his tone, a hint of admiration in his eyes.

"Emily, can I see you in my office?" Ethan asked, his voice low and smooth, as he stood in her doorway.

Emily's heart skipped a beat as she nodded, gathering her things and following him into his office. What now? Had she done something wrong again?

Ethan closed the door behind her, his eyes scanning the room before landing on hers. "Emily, I wanted to talk to you about the presentation," he said, his voice measured.

Emily's heart sank, anticipating criticism. "Yes, sir?" she replied, her voice neutral.

Ethan leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving hers. "You did an excellent job, Emily. Your research was thorough, your delivery was confident, and your ideas were innovative. I was impressed."

Emily felt a flush rise to her cheeks as she smiled, trying to keep her cool. "Thank you, sir. I was worried I'd mess it up."

Ethan chuckled, a low, throaty sound. "You have a talent for this, Emily. Don't sell yourself short. I think you're ready for more responsibility."

Emily's eyes widened as Ethan continued, "I've been thinking of promoting you to a marketing role. You're wasted as a secretary, Emily. You have potential."

Emily's heart soared as she stared at Ethan, her mind racing with possibilities. A marketing role? Was this a joke? But Ethan's expression was serious, his eyes gleaming with sincerity.

"I...I don't know what to say, sir," Emily stammered, her voice barely above a whisper.

Ethan smiled, a small, enigmatic smile. "Just say you'll do it, Emily. I have a feeling you'll be a natural."

Emily nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "Yes, sir. I'll do it."

As she left Ethan's office, Emily felt like she was walking on air. She couldn't believe it. A promotion? Her own marketing role? She was going to make it happen, no matter what it took.

The days that followed were a whirlwind of activity, as Emily prepared for her new role. She attended meetings, met with clients, and worked tirelessly to learn the ropes. Ethan was always there, guiding her, mentoring her, and pushing her to excel.

As the weeks turned into months, Emily's confidence grew. She was making a difference, contributing to the company, and earning her place on the team. And Ethan was always there, watching, guiding, and supporting her.

But amidst all the praise and recognition, Emily couldn't shake off the feeling that Ethan's behavior towards her was changing. He was still demanding, still perfectionistic, but there was something more, something that made her heart skip a beat.

As she worked late one evening, Emily felt a presence behind her. She turned to find Ethan standing in her doorway, his eyes fixed on hers.

"Good job, Emily," he said, his voice low and smooth. "You're doing great."

Emily smiled, her heart racing as Ethan turned and walked away, leaving her wondering what lay ahead.

As the days turned into weeks, Emily found herself looking forward to Ethan's praise, his guidance, and his presence. She was developing feelings for her boss, feelings she knew she shouldn't have.

But as she looked up to see Ethan watching her, his eyes gleaming with approval, Emily knew it was too late. She was already falling, and she didn't know how to stop.
