Chapter 22 - The Hour That Breathes- I

The darkness ahead was no longer empty.

It had depth.

Vyom felt it before he saw it.

A pressure—

subtle, yet suffocating—

as though the space ahead was already occupied by something that had not yet revealed its form.

He slowed.

Not consciously.

His body resisted.

"…Dev…"

"Yes."

"…this place feels different…"

"It is."

The answer came without elaboration.

Vyom swallowed.

The ground beneath him pulsed again.

Once.

Then twice.

Not rhythm.

Recognition.

At that moment, Vyom thought to himself—

It's not just reacting… it knows I'm here.

The thought did not comfort him.

The path ahead began to widen.

Gradually.

Not into a room.

Into something larger.

The walls pulled back—not smoothly, but in jagged, uneven shifts—like something struggling to remember what "space" was supposed to look like.

Vyom stepped forward.

And the tunnel ended.

Not with an opening.

But with an absence.

He stood at the edge of something vast.

A world.

Or the remains of one.

There was no sky.

Only layers.

Endless overlapping fragments of landscapes—some inverted, some broken, some frozen mid-collapse—stacked upon each other like discarded thoughts.

A forest hung upside down above him.

A city stretched sideways in the distance, its buildings twisted into unnatural angles.

A river flowed upward into nothing.

And beneath his feet—

solid ground.

But it trembled.

As though unsure whether it should exist.

Vyom's breath caught.

"…Dev…"

"Yes."

"…where are we…?"

A pause.

Not hesitation.

Measurement.

"This is where the hours accumulate."

Vyom frowned.

He did not understand.

But something inside him—

something quiet—

felt the truth of it.

At that moment, Vyom thought to himself—

This isn't a place… it's what's left of many places.

The air shifted.

A distant sound echoed.

Not wind.

Not movement.

Voices.

Faint.

Layered.

Unstable.

Vyom turned sharply.

"…did you hear that?"

"Yes."

"…what is it?"

Dev did not answer immediately.

"Others."

Vyom froze.

Others.

Not creatures.

Not walls.

People.

His chest tightened.

Hope.

Fear.

Both rose at the same time.

"…there are people here…?"

"Yes."

The confirmation came plainly.

But it did not bring comfort.

Because Dev added—

"They have been here longer than you."

The ground beneath them shifted.

A crack formed.

Thin.

Slowly spreading.

Vyom stepped back instinctively.

The crack stopped.

As if reconsidering.

At that moment, Vyom thought to himself—

Even the ground is unstable…

He looked ahead again.

The vast, broken world stretched endlessly.

But something moved within it.

Not everywhere.

Only in certain places.

Shadows.

Not attached to anything.

Drifting.

Watching.

Waiting.

Vyom's grip tightened around himself.

"…Dev…"

"Yes."

"…are those… things…?"

"No."

A pause.

"Not entirely."

Vyom did not ask further.

He did not want to know.

A sound echoed again.

Closer this time.

Footsteps.

Uneven.

Dragging.

Vyom turned.

From behind a fractured wall—half stone, half something else—a figure emerged.

A man.

Thin.

Too thin.

His clothes hung loosely from his body, torn and stained with something dark that no longer looked like blood.

His eyes—

sunken.

But alive.

Barely.

He stopped when he saw Vyom.

They stared at each other.

For a long moment.

Then—

The man laughed.

A dry, broken sound.

"…new…"

Vyom flinched.

The word felt wrong.

Like it had been used too many times before.

"…Dev…"

"Yes."

"…is he… normal…?"

Dev did not respond immediately.

The man took a step forward.

Slow.

Careful.

"…you can still speak…"

His voice cracked.

"…good…"

Vyom hesitated.

"…who are you…?"

The man tilted his head.

As if the question itself confused him.

"…who…"

He repeated it softly.

Then laughed again.

"…I forgot…"

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

At that moment, Vyom thought to himself—

He's been here too long…

The man suddenly leaned closer.

Too close.

"…but you…"

His eyes sharpened slightly.

"…you still remember…"

Vyom stepped back.

"…remember what…?"

The man's smile widened.

Not happily.

Hungrily.

"…everything…"

Dev moved.

Not quickly.

But deliberately.

Placing itself between Vyom and the man.

"That is enough."

The man stopped.

His expression shifted.

Recognition.

"…you…"

He whispered.

"…the guide…"

Dev remained still.

The man took another step back.

Slowly.

"…you always bring them…"

A pause.

"…and they always break…"

Vyom's chest tightened.

At that moment, Vyom thought to himself—

He's talking about me…

The man turned away.

Muttering to himself.

"…first hour… always the same…"

Then—

He stopped.

His body froze.

Completely.

Vyom frowned.

"…Dev…?"

"Do not move."

The warning came instantly.

Sharp.

The air shifted.

Heavier.

Colder.

The shadows—

moved.

Not drifting anymore.

Not watching.

Converging.

The man trembled.

"…it's coming…"

His voice broke.

"…it remembers…"

Vyom's breath hitched.

"…what remembers…?"

No answer.

The ground pulsed again.

Harder this time.

BOOM.

The sound did not come from below.

It came from everywhere.

The shadows stretched.

Twisted.

And from within them—

something began to take shape.

Not fully.

Not clearly.

But enough.

A figure—

made of shifting fragments—

faces.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

Layered.

Overlapping.

All incomplete.

All whispering.

Vyom's body went cold.

At that moment, Vyom thought to himself—

This… isn't a creature…

Dev spoke.

Low.

Controlled.

"Do not let it take form."

Vyom's mind froze.

"…how—"

"Do not acknowledge it."

The whispers grew louder.

Closer.

Words began to form.

Familiar.

Too familiar.

"Vyom…"

His breath stopped.

"…come back…"

His eyes widened.

"…we're waiting…"

His mother's voice.

"No—"

Vyom stepped back.

"Ma—"

"Do not respond."

Dev's voice cut through sharply.

The figure shifted.

Faces rearranging.

His mother.

His father.

Someone else.

Someone he couldn't recognize—

but felt.

At that moment, Vyom thought to himself—

It's using what I remember…

The realization came too late.

The figure leaned forward.

Not moving.

Just… closer.

"…you left us…"

Vyom shook his head.

"…no… I didn't—"

"STOP."

Dev's voice rang out.

The world trembled.

The figure faltered.

Just for a moment.

"Do not answer."

Dev's voice dropped.

"…it needs you to respond."

Vyom bit his lip.

Hard.

The whispers grew louder.

More desperate.

More convincing.

"…Vyom…"

"…please…"

"…it hurts…"

His body shook.

His chest burned.

At that moment, Vyom thought to himself—

If I answer… will it become real?

He stayed silent.

The figure paused.

Then—

something changed.

The faces twisted.

Distorted.

Anger.

The whispers turned—

into screams.

The ground cracked.

The air split.

The figure lunged—

not forward—

but outward.

Trying to become.

Dev stepped forward.

"Now run."

Vyom didn't hesitate.

He ran.

Behind him—

the world broke.

And the first hour—

truly began.
