Chapter 22 - Less Than Whole

Corrupted roots twitch and retract from the doorways entrance with a rather sickening, wet screeching noise.

INFECT.SPRED.INCORPORATE.

These words dig there way to the forefront of my mind as I watch the creature take shape. A vaguely human mass that pulses like a massive heart. Gets wrap in a shell of wood, muscles and tendons that begin wriggling over its surface. Weaving multiple strand of sinue into make shift limbs.

What remains when it fully forms is a 8 foot sphere of black red wood with a massive mouth carved into it and 6 disturbing human like legs holding it aloft.

WWWAAQQQCKKWWWQAK!

Its mouth opens exposing that still horribly beating heart and dozens of tendrils that reach twords us.

My instincts scream to run. RUN RUN RUN! This. Is a real monster. It's aura of dread is completely. No flaws, no caveats. Even Glutton wants to run!

But ware would we run to? The floor is sealed, if it's half as inexhaustible as its offspring then we'll eventually get caught and we don't even have enough food to survive here longer than a few days. Eventually we'll have to fight…Fight, FIGHT."FIGHT!"

Gripping my the haft if my weapon hard enough to turn my nuckles white, I shove as much astral mass as i can into it. I push my desire unto the wepon as it has done several times to me. FIGHT. No time to hesitate. Advance, build, become a furious storm and guide me!

A new furry fills me partially offsetting the supernatural dread. Even if it dose nothing to stop my real fears. I don't want to die. Cleave, Bind, and Glutton. A full tank of force and an incomplete core I can break apart. An unnaturally sharp rock, and Ghost whose already halfway down the hallway…These are my tools for survival in this fight!

It takes an unsteady step forward, I match the distances with a furious charge into the once surgery room.

[WARNING YOU ARE ENTERING INTO AN ABERRANT MONSTER LAYER, RECOMMEND CORE LEVEL-10]

I barely hear the mental warning as Glutton guides me through a brage of whips. Jump, doge, strike, duck, advance. Forward we push into the tide! Having now ingaged the monster I can determine a few things. It's regeneration is incredible, capable of easily regrowing dozens of feet of vine in moments, yet it's durability is awful. The blackened roots it's claimed or corrupted are little more than rot, and calcified sinue. Barely retaining enough sturdiness to be woven into a rough body.

If I had unlimited man power ripping the monster apart would honestly be a matter of time rather than skill. But I just have my small strangely durable self and a clawed club.

Shearing off another few tendrils I start feeding my wepon Force. Hopefully this abomination can burn.

WWWAAAQAQCCK!

It bellows furiously as electricity begins biting Into its tendrils. Inciting the monster to increase it's blind chaotic assault. Thankfully it's blind, otherwise I'd never be able to doge it's plethora of attacks. Less lucky it doesn't burn since it's so…wet. Though the electricity does slow down its movements and regeneration. Minutes pass in this unsteady balance of me ripping off its tendrils and it preventing me from getting closer than 5 feet from it's body. Curiously its attacks focus more on my wepon than me? But that fine, Glutton isn't so easily destroyed.

That's probably why we didn't notice the tendril that swung for my legs. "E, WAI!" I'm suddenly wrapped in its coils, and pulled foot first twords it's gaping maw. Panicked I slam Gluttons claws into the floor halting the pull. But making me an easy target.

THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD

"AHHH-ahhh-" the air is quickly robbed from my lungs as it repeatedly bludgeons me with a heavily woven appendage. Hazey headed I slash outward with my left hand. Ripping a chunk of my core away to Cleave myself free from the monsters clutches using the carving rock as a medium for the ability.

WHHHHAAAAAK!

It back pestles in surprise and seaming pain. Giving me a moment to pull myself back together.

"Note to self… don't get caught again." I wheeze out as I stager back upright, clutching my weapon like it's a lifeline. My insides are a bit mashed and I definitely have a few broken ribs now… but curiously the monster isn't regenerating it's severed tendrils. Now that I think about it, nothing has ever survived long enough to heal from getting cut apart by Cleave other than myself, but my body is odd.

I glance down at the severed tenrils on the floor… there twitching yet clearly withering away. If only I didn't have to damage my core to use my ability this way… i shake my head. it has six legs… if I can cut off a few, with Cleave preventing there regeneration I'd at least limit its movement. I still need to find away to kill it though.

With a wobbly step i get back into the fight, letting Glutton guided me as I try and plan. Glutton's electricity dose some damage, the most damage if I don't count Cleave. It's just not enough to overwhelm the monsters healing. I need more, or perhaps I just need it all at once.

Glutton has never held back on releasing electricity before but it should be able to and even if the wepon can't… what else is Bind for if not holding things in place?
