I had a feeling things weren't that simple.
Sure enough, Rachel's call came not long after, bringing shocking news.
Zuriel had put Jack in the hospital.
"His life is saved for now, but he's seriously injured. It must be Zuriel taking revenge and deliberately trying to kill Jack. This man is too scary."
When I arrived at the hospital, Zuriel's assistant was sitting outside the ward.
Rachel was still trying to get on his good side, but the assistant remained unmoved, not even sparing her a glance.
"Hazel, you're finally here."
Rachel happily ran over and pulled me towards the ward.
I saw the assistant give me a worried look before leaving to make a phone call.
Sure enough, Zuriel arrived shortly after.
He had lost his usual poise. A lock of hair had fallen out of place from running.
Zuriel was panting heavily. Before he could catch his breath, he anxiously grabbed my hand, repeatedly squeezing it.
He always did this when he felt insecure.
"It wasn't me."
Zuriel was eager to explain. The assistant beside him quickly spoke up too.
"It's true, Madam. I can testify. That man suddenly rushed out."
"Impossible. Who would throw themselves in front of a car for no reason?"
Rachel screamed behind me.
"Our Hazel would never believe your lies. Do you know how important Jack is to her?"
I have to say, Rachel was quite skilled at adding fuel to the fire. As soon as she finished speaking, Zuriel immediately became anxious, gripping my hand even tighter.
"Can you let go of me first?"
"No, I won't let you leave."
"Then can you just release one hand?"
Zuriel kept shaking his head, but reluctantly loosened one hand.
"Don't hold onto Hazel. She won't believe your lies. She..."
Before she could finish, I immediately used my free hand to slap Rachel hard across the face.
"Do I not have a mouth of my own? Do I need you to speak for me?"
Rachel was stunned by the slap. At the same time, the ward door opened.
Jack's left arm and right leg were in casts, and his face had several scratches.

"Hazel, I'm so glad you came to see me. Everything is worth it for you."
Jack was still the same as I remembered, putting on a deeply affectionate act.

"Let's go home," Zuriel said, pulling my hand and looking at me with hope, his tone pleading.
"Hazel, I just woke up and can't stand for long. Why don't you come in and talk?"

"zuriel, you're hurting me."
"Home." He stubbornly pulled my hand, refusing to let go.
"I'll just say a few words to him and then leave, okay? I'll say it in front of you."
Zuriel didn't respond.
"Didn't you say trust is most important between husband and wife? Don't you trust me?"
Zuriel wavered for a long time before finally releasing my hand.
"Ten minutes. That's all."
I didn't need ten minutes. Ten seconds was enough.
I walked up to Jack. His eyes lit up.
"Hazel, I knew you wouldn't be so heartless."
I smiled lightly and unhesitatingly raised my hand.
I put all my strength into this slap. My hand even swelled up afterwards.
A crisp slap echoed through the hospital corridor.
"Your act is too fake."
If Zuriel wanted to deal with Jack, he had a thousand ways to do it. He definitely wouldn't choose this ineffective method.
Otherwise, when Jack found out Zuriel knew about my first love from me after we got married, he wouldn't have been so scared that he immediately fled abroad.
"Go to hell, you scumbag!"
I walked over to Zuriel and held out my hand to him.
"Okay, we can go home now."
As we walked out of the hospital, I could clearly feel Zuriel let out a long breath.
"Darling, you seem different."
"You're different too!"
Actually, I really wasn't sure if Zuriel would let go of my hand today. But Zuriel chose to let go in the end.
We had finally established some initial trust.
"We'll be even better in the future."
Although we were both only lovers,
Together we made a married couple.
