Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 — Lines Crossed**

**

Friday nights at Kingsley Enterprises were typically quiet, but this one felt different. The office buzzed with excitement as preparations unfolded for the annual charity gala—Liam Kingsley's most significant public event of the year. Ava Collins had spent the entire week managing guest lists, coordinating sponsor calls, and addressing last-minute issues. By the time she got home to change, she was thoroughly exhausted.

Yet, as she stood before her mirror in a simple black evening gown, she couldn't shake off thoughts about how her boss might perceive her. The realization surprised her; after all, he was her employer—not someone she needed to impress. Still, while pinning up her hair and applying subtle lipstick, a flutter of anticipation stirred in her chest.

The ballroom shimmered under the chandeliers, filled with some of New York's most influential figures. As Ava entered, she spotted Liam almost immediately. He looked exceptionally sharp in his tuxedo, his posture upright and his presence commanding. For a brief moment, their eyes locked across the room. His expression softened—a rare smile that seemed to be meant just for her.

She attempted to concentrate on her responsibilities—managing logistics and handling press inquiries—but every few minutes found herself glancing in his direction. During a lull in conversation, he made his way over to her. "Miss Collins," he said softly, "you look… different tonight."

"Different good or different bad?" she replied playfully.

His lips curved slightly. "Different distracting."

Before she could respond further, the orchestra struck up a slow waltz. Liam extended his hand toward her. "Care for a dance?"

She hesitated, looking around apprehensively. "People will talk."

"Let them," he stated firmly, his gaze steady.

Her fingers trembled as she placed her hand in his. They glided across the floor together as the world faded into music and warmth. For the first time, Ava saw not just the powerful CEO but also the man behind the title—lonely and searching but unexpectedly human.

When the song concluded, they lingered for a heartbeat longer than necessary. The air crackled with unspoken feelings between them. Finally stepping back, Liam maintained a carefully neutral tone as he said, "Thank you, Ava. You were perfect."

She nodded slightly; her voice barely above a whisper. "Goodnight, Mr. Kingsley."

As she walked away, one thought resonated in her mind—

They had crossed a line that neither of them could ignore.
