Chapter 44 - "Just friends"

Aiyumi couldn't move on from those words.

"We are just friends, not best friends."

They echoed in her head every night like a wound that wouldn't close.

She tried to act normal in college — smiled with her group, laughed at jokes —

but every time she saw Ren, it all came crashing back.

The distance, the silence, and that sentence that tore her heart apart.

One evening, she couldn't hold it in anymore.

She stopped him after class.

"Ren, can we talk? Please… about that day," she asked softly, eyes trembling.

He looked at her — calm, composed, but his tone was cold.

"There's nothing to talk about, Aiyumi. We've already cleared that."

"No, you didn't!" she said, her voice shaking.

"You said we're just friends — do you even know how much that hurt? After everything… you meant more than that to me."

Ren sighed, looking away.

"Aiyumi, you're being emotional again. You overthink small things. It's not a big deal."

"Not a big deal?"

Her words cracked mid-sentence.

"You don't understand, do you? You were the only person I trusted fully… the only one I believed would never leave me."

He didn't reply.

His silence was sharper than any argument.

That night, Aiyumi sat in her room, tears soaking her pillow.

She replayed every moment — the teasing, the laughter, the way he'd wait for her every morning.

Now, it felt like none of it had ever mattered.

She whispered to herself,

"Maybe I was the only one who took that friendship too seriously."

Her heart broke — not because he stopped talking,

but because he acted like it never mattered at all.

💭 Sometimes the cruelest endings don't come with anger or betrayal —

they come with cold indifference.
