Chapter 14-Bonds and Conflicts
Right after Luka finished his lunch, he went up to the rooftop to talk with Jean.
When he got there, Jean spoke with a serious expression:
— Luka, we need you right now!
Luka raised an eyebrow and asked:
— What's going on, Jean? Can you explain it to me?
Jean took a deep breath, trying to stay calm, and replied:
— The mutants are advancing faster than we expected. Magneto is coming… much sooner than we imagined. He's leading a horde of over a hundred mutants with offensive abilities. As for the rest, we still don't know. That's why, Luka… we need your help.
Luka sighed and said:
— Of course, Jean. I'll help you guys. Just let me know when you need me… and be careful.
Jean broke down in tears. She was deeply shaken, knowing that many innocent mutants would die — or be hunted down by the government. Even if they managed to save New York, the blame would still fall on them.
Seeing that, Luka just hugged her as she cried against his chest.
A few minutes later, Jean composed herself and said:
— So, Luka, I'll be waiting for you after school to teach you how to control your psychic powers better. See you later.
She came closer, kissed him on the cheek, and headed for the stairs. Luka froze for a moment — he hadn't expected that from Jean — but deep down, he felt a certain happiness.
As he went down the stairs, he found Gwen and Peter waiting for him.
Gwen looked at Luka and asked:
— So… was it about that thing, or not?
Luka just nodded. Peter, not very interested, said:
— Well, Luka, talk to you later. I've got class now.
Peter walked off toward his classroom, followed by Gwen, and Luka hurried up as well so he wouldn't be late.
When school ended, Jean was already waiting for Luka so they could head to Professor Xavier's Mansion.
Gwen, who wasn't dumb at all — and wanting to make it clear that Luka was hers — kissed him right in front of Jean and said:
— So, Luka… see you at our place.
Jean didn't know why, but she felt a mix of anger and jealousy when she saw that. Still, she decided to let it slide.
And so, Luka and Jean went on their way to Professor Xavier's Mansion.
