"Naruto: Ice God"Chapter 104: A New Mission
Upon hearing the term Mangekyō Sharingan, Jiraiya stopped in his tracks and stared at Feng Bai with disbelief.
"That kid... he's only thirteen this year, right?"
As one of the Third Hokage's disciples and a pillar of the village, Jiraiya naturally understood what the Mangekyō Sharingan represented.
These were the very eyes possessed by Madara Uchiha, who together with Hashirama Senju had founded Konohagakure. Even within the Uchiha clan, such power was extraordinarily rare.
At the very least, in recent years, there had been no word of any new Mangekyō Sharingan wielders emerging from the Uchiha clan.
"You should understand the relationship between the Uchiha and the village. Now that Obito has awakened these eyes, it's hardly good news for Konoha."
Feng Bai knew Jiraiya's character well. Though he spent most of his time wandering outside the village, Jiraiya's devotion to Konoha ran deeper than either of his fellow Sannin.
Knowing how strained relations were between the Uchiha and Konoha, he certainly wouldn't stand idly by.
"You mean..."
Jiraiya frowned as he looked at Feng Bai, his tone growing serious.
"I've already told him to keep this information from his clan for now. At the same time, I hope you'll take him as your disciple. With the Mangekyō Sharingan, he'll undoubtedly wield considerable influence within the Uchiha clan in the future. You know Obito's character—if he could lead the Uchiha, it wouldn't be a bad thing for the village."
Feng Bai spoke at length, delivering his carefully prepared arguments designed to persuade Jiraiya.
"You're unexpectedly mature, kid. Compared to your radical father, your approach is actually quite sound."
After weighing the pros and cons, Jiraiya realized Feng Bai was right. If a simple-minded fool like Obito could control the Uchiha clan, it would indeed be a blessing for the village.
As long as he guided him properly...
"I'll agree to this for now, but formal instruction will have to wait until after the war ends."
Under Feng Bai's expectant gaze, Jiraiya accepted the request.
Nice!
Hearing Jiraiya agree, Feng Bai cheered internally. This way, Obito truly would be like a nephew to him, and calling him "my good son" in the future would sound even more natural.
Of course, the deeper reason was to secure Obito a powerful patron.
Should he try to sell Kakashi to Jiraiya as well?
While Feng Bai plotted, Jiraiya assigned him a new task: "You've rested enough lately. It's time to help your senior brother with some work."
"Huh?"
...
"What were you discussing with that peeping pervert, Feng Bai?"
Dragged over early in the morning, Obito looked curiously at Feng Bai as he emerged from behind the tent, his eyes radiating pure, innocent stupidity.
"Nothing much. I just discussed with Jiraiya-sama about him taking you as his disciple."
Feng Bai waved dismissively, acting nonchalant.
"Become that pervert's disciple? No way! All he does is drag me around looking for places where girls bathe."
Obito shook his head like a rattle drum.
Having received Jiraiya's guidance before, he knew the man's nature better than anyone.
"Besides, if I become his disciple, wouldn't I have to call you 'Master Uncle'?!"
Obito's next words made Feng Bai's eyes widen in shock.
Staring at Obito in amazement, Feng Bai's intense gaze made Obito nervous.
"Wh-what's wrong? Did I say something wrong...?"
Faced with Feng Bai's piercing stare, Obito shrank his neck, unsure which of his words had upset him again.
Holy shit, Obito actually realized the generational hierarchy issue so quickly, and even knows he'd have to call me Master Uncle?
Is this guy really Obito and not some disguised Iwa ninja infiltrator?
Could the Mangekyō Sharingan actually boost the wielder's intelligence?
But that can't be right—my old man later got a Mangekyō too, and I didn't see his IQ improve much.
And Shisui, who swallowed his pride after having his eye stolen and jumped off a cliff alone without revealing the truth—that hardly seemed like enhanced intelligence.
As for Sasuke, well, his nickname "Second Pillar" says it all.
"Obito, what's one plus one?"
"Uh, two."
"You're definitely not Obito! Tell me, who are you really?!"
"What—how did you reach that conclusion?!"
...
After a friendly and harmonious exchange, Feng Bai finally confirmed that the Obito before him was genuine, and Obito, moved by Feng Bai's "gentle" persuasion, accepted Jiraiya as his teacher.
"Look on the bright side—this way you and Minato-nii will be fellow disciples."
Seeing Obito squatting on the ground looking pitiful, Feng Bai crouched down and patted his shoulder consolingly.
"But I'm going to be the captain of the Military Police Force someday. With a peeping pervert as my teacher, what will people think of me?"
Obito was still concerned about his dream.
"That's not a conflict at all. Look, if you become the Military Police Force captain, whenever Jiraiya peeps, you can lead your men to arrest him. Lock him up when necessary, execute him when warranted—everyone will praise you for your righteousness over personal ties."
Seeing Obito worry about such trivial matters, Feng Bai found it both amusing and touching in its innocence, suppressing his laughter as he comforted him.
"Alright, pull yourself together. We'll be heading out on a mission in a few days. This one's long-term, so stay alert."
Thinking about the task Jiraiya had assigned him, Feng Bai put away his smile and rubbed his temples with some frustration.
After several battles, Feng Bai had identified some problems within his team.
The biggest issue was Rin's positioning.
As a pure medical ninja, Rin didn't possess Tsunade's monstrous close-combat abilities. Her taijutsu was at best genin-level; she'd only been promoted to chunin thanks to excellent teamwork and superb medical ninjutsu.
This pure support role made her an easy target for enemies, forcing Feng Bai to constantly stay vigilant and monitor her movements.
Tsunade's medical ninja training system had indeed saved many ninja lives, but it also forced these combat-weak medical personnel to the front lines, directly facing enemy fire.
In Feng Bai's view, medical ninja should form mobile units escorted by elite ninja, providing battlefield treatment while moving, rather than being dispersed into squads and relying on teammates for protection.
"I'll discuss this issue with Tsunade-sama when we return. At minimum, medical ninja with insufficient self-defense capabilities should operate with the main force."
Although he'd managed to avoid Obito's fate of being crushed by falling rocks, who knew whether Madara would still target Obito?
Rin, as Obito's weakness, absolutely had to be properly protected.
