Chapter 105 - Bonus Chapter 104

The Golden Cage.

Because The Purge was a high-concept film with a tight budget, the director, Zack Snyder, couldn't afford to blow up skyscrapers or film massive city-wide riots. Instead, the terror was claustrophobic. The entire story focused on one family: The Sandins.

James Sandin (played by Ethan Hawke) was a salesman. He sold high-end home security systems designed specifically for Purge Night. Business was booming.

Ten years ago, the Sandins were broke. Now, thanks to the annual slaughter, they lived in a massive mansion in a gated community. They were even browsing brochures for a new yacht.

But their wealth came with a price: The neighbors hated them.

4:00 PM.

With just hours left before the siren, a neighbor, Grace, knocked on the door.

"Hi, Mary," Grace smiled, her expression stiff. "I baked some cookies. I hope your family likes them."

Mary Sandin (played by Lena Headey) accepted the basket. "Thank you, Grace. That's so sweet."

Grace looked past Mary into the foyer. Her eyes were cold.

"Your new extension is so big, Mary," Grace said, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. "You know, times are tough for everyone else. Even finding a job on those new online professional networking sites isn't easy."

Mary frowned. "What do you mean?"

"I mean," Grace stepped closer, "your husband sells security systems to everyone in this neighborhood. People are whispering, Mary. They say we paid for your renovations."

Mary looked shocked. "People are saying that?"

"Relax," Grace patted her arm, though the gesture felt like a threat. "It's just gossip. I plan to lock my doors tight tonight. Good luck, Mary."

Grace turned and walked away. Mary watched her go, a knot of dread forming in her stomach.

The audience in the theater felt it too. The neighbors weren't just jealous. They were waiting.

The Commercial Break.

In the front row, Steve Jobs blinked.

"Did she just say 'online professional networking sites'?" Jobs whispered to Lasseter.

He glanced over at Zane, who was watching the screen with a poker face.

"That bastard," Jobs muttered, half-impressed. "He put an ad inside the movie."

Jeff Bezos noticed it too. Zane was launching a LinkedIn competitor, and he had shamelessly wedged a plug into the dialogue of a horror movie.

"Interesting," Will Smith whispered to Charlize Theron. "He never misses a chance to sell something, does he?"

"It's clumsy," Theron critiqued. "But effective."

The Conspiracy.

The movie cut to a montage of America preparing for the night.

People sharpening machetes. Suburban dads cleaning shotguns. Store owners boarding up windows.

A voiceover from a TV news anchor explained the "logic" of the Purge:

"To alleviate the wealth gap and reduce crime, the government established the Annual Purge. By releasing our aggression for 12 hours, we maintain peace for the rest of the year."

But the subtext was screaming at the audience: It's a lie.

The Purge wasn't about psychology. It was about economics. It was a way for the government to eliminate the poor, the homeless, and the weak—people who couldn't afford James Sandin's security systems.

"My god," a young girl in the theater whispered, clutching her boyfriend's arm. "This is sick. They have no humanity."

"It's just a movie," he reassured her. "But honestly? If this were real, it would probably be even worse."

Lockdown.

7:00 PM.

The siren wailed across the city. A terrifying, mechanical sound that signaled the start of the holiday.

Inside the Sandin house, James pressed a button.

CLANG. CLANG. CLANG.

Thick steel plates slammed down over every window and door. The house transformed into a fortress.

"I have good news," James announced at the dinner table, raising a glass of wine. "The quarterly numbers are in. I'm number one again. We sold the most upgraded systems in the district."

The family cheered. They felt safe. They were rich, protected, and isolated from the chaos outside.

Or so they thought.

In the control room, the youngest son, Charlie, was watching the security monitors.

He saw a figure stumbling down the street. It was a Black man, bleeding, screaming for help. He was being hunted.

"Help me!" the man cried, looking directly into the camera. "For God's sake, someone let me in!"

The logic of the Purge was simple: Don't get involved. Let him die.

But Charlie was a kid. He hadn't lost his humanity yet.

His fingers hovered over the keypad.

Beep. Boop. Beep.

The front locks disengaged. The heavy steel shutters began to rise.

"No!"

James Sandin sprinted into the room. "Charlie, what are you doing?!"

It was too late. The stranger scrambled under the rising gate and collapsed in the hallway.

"Get out!"

James pulled his pistol, aiming it at the bleeding man. "Get out of my house before I kill you myself!"

The safety of the fortress was broken. And outside, the hunters who had been chasing the stranger stopped at the gate. They took off their masks, and they smiled.
