Chapter 5 - Confronting

Chapter 4

Just Say Yes, Coward.

"You're going to do what?" I hissed as we stood behind the hallway pillar between third and fourth period.

"Confront him." Fatima said it like she was announcing a wedding. My wedding.

"No. No no no. Absolutely not. There is no confrontation. We bury this and move on with our lives."

"Too late," she smiled sweetly. "I already texted Yuri."

"You what?!"

Before I could process anything, a familiar voice echoed down the hallway.

"Ladies," Keifer said, strolling over like he was walking a red carpet, school bag slung over one shoulder, smug expression already loaded.

And, of course, Yuri was beside him, sipping from a juice box like he was watching a live drama unfold.

I took one step back. Fatima took one step forward.

"We need to talk," she said, crossing her arms like a lawyer about to ruin someone's day.

Keifer raised a brow. "About?"

"Don't play dumb, Watson."

"I'm not playing anything."

"Oh really?" Fatima said, eyes glinting. "Because the initials M. K. W. sound suspiciously like a certain arrogant, loud-mouthed boy we know who's been staring at my best friend like she's the last samosa at a party."

I choked. "Fatima-!"

Keifer blinked, then smiled.

Not a regular smile. A dangerous one.

"Oh?" he said slowly, tilting his head toward me. "Is that what you think, Jay?"

"Don't bring me into this," I said, backing up more. "She's doing all the talking. I'm just the unwilling participant in this horror film."

Yuri leaned closer to Keifer, whispering, "Samosa's a compliment, by the way."

"Shut up, Yuri," I muttered.

Keifer stuffed his hands into his pockets, still watching me with that unreadable expression - like he was both amused and a little... nervous?

He didn't say yes.

But he didn't say no.

Fatima squinted. "Okay. So. Are you MKW or not?"

Keifer shrugged. "Could be. Could not be."

Yuri, who had been way too quiet, suddenly gasped and stage-whispered, "He's doing the mysterious love interest act again. Classic Keif."

"Again?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.

Keifer kicked the wall casually. "You think I'd tell you if I had a crush on someone?"

Fatima smirked. "You did. Literally. Last week."

"I said initials. That's not a confession. That's fun."

"You know what's not fun? My blood pressure right now," I snapped, crossing my arms.

He looked at me then - not smirking, not teasing. Just... looking.

Like he was trying to figure something out.

Like I was something to be figured out.

"Why do you care, Jay?" he asked softly.

And suddenly it wasn't fun anymore. It was a little too quiet. A little too close.

"I don't," I said, lying horribly.

Fatima broke the silence with a clap. "Okay! So! We're still pretending this isn't a slow-burn romance, got it. Jay, let's go before I start matchmaking even harder."

"I hate you," I muttered as she dragged me away.

"You'll thank me at your wedding," she whispered back.

Behind us, I could feel Keifer watching.

And the worst part?

For the first time ever...

I kind of wanted to look back.
