Chapter 35 - CHAPTER 35 : The World Beneath the Stars That Don’t Exist

The first thing Kael felt was cold.

Not the kind that bites the skin.

Not winter-cold or shadow-cold.

A deeper cold — like someone had emptied all the warmth out of the universe and forgotten to put it back.

Kael gasped as the world snapped back around him.

For a moment he couldn't tell if he was standing, falling, floating, or folded into himself. The ground felt distant, soft, almost unsure of its own shape. His breath fogged in the air, forming brief silver clouds.

Tova materialized beside him a heartbeat later, stumbling as her boots scraped on something smooth.

"Kael—where are we?"

Her voice shook, echoing strangely, as if the air wasn't sure how to carry sound.

Kael blinked hard.

Shapes emerged through the curtain of silver mist.

Black stone.

Glittering glass structures.

Floating shards of land hovering in perfect silence.

A sky with no stars — only a silver void swirling like painted smoke.

Kael whispered, "This isn't a world."

Tova tightened her grip on her staff. "Then what is it?"

"A broken one," Kael said quietly.

---

The Ruins of a Forgotten Realm

They stood on a cracked platform of smooth obsidian-like material. It reflected faint ghost-images of them, but the reflections lagged behind — a second late, like time here was confused.

Kael looked up.

The sky was a swirling dome of silver clouds, but inside that swirling layer, something sparkled — faint pinpricks of light.

Not stars.

Cracks.

The sky was fracturing.

A chill ran through Kael's spine. "This place… it's damaged."

Tova studied the floating shards of land drifting around them.

"Look at the edges," she said softly. "They're not broken. They're… sliced. Carefully. Like pieces of a world cut apart and left floating."

Kael felt the Seed pulse in his chest — a soft, uneasy rhythm.

"It remembers this," he murmured.

Tova looked sharply at him. "The Seed?"

"Yes. This world… this is where it came from."

Tova's eyes widened. "This was the origin realm?"

Kael stepped forward slowly.

"Or what's left of it."

---

Voices in the Fog

A sound drifted through the silver air.

A whisper.

Soft.

Distant.

Kael stiffened. "Did you hear that?"

Tova clutched her staff. "Yes. But it doesn't sound… physical."

Kael listened again carefully.

This time, he recognized the tone.

Not the words — they were spoken in an ancient tongue he didn't understand.

But the emotion behind them — fear.

The whisper repeated, echoing off invisible walls—

"…shai'thar… sai'nora… ter'mal…."

Kael touched the nearest broken column.

The moment his fingers brushed the stone, the whisper sharpened — as if recognizing him.

"…Orithi…?"

Kael jerked his hand back.

"What was that?!"

Tova swallowed hard. "It said a word. Orithi. Does that mean anything to you?"

Kael shook his head.

But the Seed inside him felt like it flinched.

And then —

From the mist —

a shape formed.

---

The Thing That Was Not a Thing

At first it looked like a shadow.

Then a streak of silver light.

Then a ripple — like heat over water.

Then it folded inward and unfolded again, taking form.

A tall figure.

Humanoid.

Skin like translucent star-glass.

Veins glowing silver beneath the surface.

Eyes like swirling galaxies — white and silver, constantly shifting.

Tova gasped. "Kael… this is not human."

Kael stepped in front of her.

The figure studied Kael with silent intensity.

When it spoke, its voice echoed like chimes underwater.

"You carry the First Flame."

Kael tensed. "And you are…?"

The being tilted its head.

"Remnant. That is the closest name for what is left of us."

Tova whispered, "A… remnant of what?"

The being seemed to flicker with sadness.

"Of the world before yours."

Kael swallowed. "What happened here?"

The Remnant raised a hand.

And the world answered.

Light poured from the cracks in the sky, shifting through the mist like liquid memory. The floating shards glowed, showing flickering scenes.

A city of crystal towers — alive with fire-born beings.

Skies full of swirling golden storms.

A world made entirely with the First Flame.

And then —

the collapse.

A tear in the sky.

A monstrous shape of shadow and fire devouring entire continents.

Beings like the Remnant fighting — failing — falling.

Kael felt his breath stop.

"It was the creature," he whispered. "The one that hunted me."

The Remnant nodded slowly.

"It was a Harrower. Born of the Void-Between. A devourer of creation. It sensed the Flame and sought to claim it."

Tova whispered, "Just like in your home…"

Kael clenched his fists.

"And the Seed?" Kael asked.

"What happened to it?"

The Remnant's galaxy-eyes dimmed.

"The Seed was our core. Our heart. Our origin.

When the Harrower broke our world, the Seed was torn free."

Kael felt sick. "And it… fell. Through realities."

"Yes," the Remnant said.

"Falling through realm after realm, breaking pieces of each until it reached yours."

Kael stepped back.

He suddenly felt unbearably small.

"So the Seed was never meant for any world after this," Kael whispered. "It was… homeless."

The Remnant nodded.

"Until it landed in you."

Tova looked at Kael — almost fearful.

Kael's voice cracked.

"Why me?"

The Remnant's gaze softened.

"Because your world cracked… just enough for it to enter.

And because you are the only vessel who did not die from its touch."

Kael's breath shook.

"Then what am I supposed to do?" he whispered.

The Remnant stepped closer — its form bending like shifting light.

"You must do what we could not."

"Which is…?" Kael breathed.

The Remnant raised its hand.

The silver sky cracked further.

Through the cracks — swirling darkness pressed forward.

Not starless.

Not shapeless.

Alive.

The same ancient force that destroyed this realm.

The Harrower.

"It followed you," the Remnant whispered.

"It knows the Seed awakened. It knows the Flame has been claimed."

Kael's stomach twisted. "It's coming… to my world."

The Remnant nodded slowly.

"Unless you stop it first."

Tova grabbed Kael's arm. "We need to go—now."

Kael turned to the Remnant.

"Tell me what I have to do."

The Remnant's voice lowered into a trembling, cosmic whisper.

"Find the Fracture Gate. The last surviving path into the Void-Between."

Kael frowned. "Why?"

The Remnant's words echoed like prophecy.

"Because you cannot defeat the Harrower in your world.

You must fight it where it was born."

Kael swallowed hard.

"And where is that?"

The Remnant pointed toward the far horizon — where the silver mist darkened into a swirling vortex, pulsing like a wound in reality.

"At the end of this broken world."

The ground shook violently.

The sky cracked further.

Darkness flooded in.

The Harrower was arriving.

Kael grabbed Tova.

"We run. Now."

The Remnant began to fade — its form dissolving into light.

But before it vanished completely, it whispered one final message.

"Kael… remember your name. That is what will keep you alive."

Light swallowed the Remnant.

Darkness swallowed the sky.

Kael and Tova sprinted toward the vortex of the Fracture Gate — toward the birthplace of a cosmic monster.

Toward the next truth.
