Chapter 196 - Through The Night

I wiped down his chest for a second time and I was even more careful around the poisoned area and other wounds. To my dismay, he didn't appear to have gotten better. The black veins had spread further and they crawled up the side of his neck now, branching across his jaw even more like cracks in glass.

His skin was still cold and it was to a degree I was even starting to feel cold near him... even after the clothing and blanket I had layered around him for warmth.

He was going to be fine. I really hoped he was.

His eyes were closed, his breathing shallow and ragged.

I sat back on my heels, my hands shaking, my chest so tight I could barely breathe.

I had done everything I could. Cleaned every wound. Dried his skin. Made him as comfortable as possible on the hard cave floor.

And it still might not be enough.

The light from the crystals cast soft shadows across his face, and in that glow, he looked almost peaceful. Almost like he was just sleeping.
