Chapter 24 - Into the Void: Birth of the True Null:Part 4

Null's shifting claws,

the Void screamed.

Not sound —

a vibration that rattled through Ethan's bones, as if the space itself hated the idea of two versions of the same soul fighting.

Blue light burst from Ethan's strike.

Black static exploded from Null's counter.

Where they met, reality cracked like glass —

thin, glowing fracture-lines spreading across the emptiness.

Null drifted back, reforming its shape with unsettling calm.

"Still fighting the truth…"

its voice rumbled, echoing like thunder underwater.

"Your denial is the only thing keeping you alive."

Ethan didn't answer.

He couldn't.

Memories — real or rewritten — were still slamming into his head like shards of broken mirrors.

Maria's voice.

Ryan's panic.

His own desperate scream when the Merge spiraled out of control.

And then Null whispered,

softly, almost gently—

"You couldn't save her then."

Ethan's chest tightened.

Null's eyes — two hollow spheres of dark fire — flickered.

"And you won't save her now."

That did it.

Ethan lunged.

This wasn't strategy.

This wasn't skill.

This was raw, furious instinct.

His blade carved a streak of blue fire through the Void.

Null split into streams of black code, reforming behind him and slamming a shadow-wave into Ethan's back.

Ethan crashed against… nothing.

There was no ground — but the impact still hurt, like hitting a wall of frozen air.

He forced himself upright.

The Void around him was changing.

Pieces of old memories drifted like shattered islands: – a chunk of the lab wall

– a corridor from his childhood home

– Maria's smile, frozen mid-laugh

– a shattered fragment of the first login screen he ever coded

Each memory flickered, unstable, as if the Void was feeding on them.

Null hovered above the fragments.

"Can't you see?"

Its voice was softer now.

"This place exists because of you.

Every fear you didn't face,

every truth you refused to accept…

they built the Void."

Ethan's pulse thundered in his ears.

But then —

something changed.

A faint light appeared behind one of the floating memory-shards.

Soft.

Warm.

Familiar.

A silhouette stepped forward — blurry, glowing.

Maria.

Not the corrupted version he'd seen before.

Not the glitch.

The real Maria — or at least the echo of her he remembered.

She reached out her hand, her voice barely a whisper through the static:

"Ethan… don't let the darkness decide who you are."

Null roared, the Void trembling violently.

"She's not real!

She's the last lie keeping you from becoming whole!"

Ethan stared at Maria.

Then at Null.

Then back at the flickering, broken memories surrounding him.

His voice came out low, steady, determined:

"Maybe she is a lie.

Maybe she's just a memory.

But she's the part of me that fights.

And you—"

Ethan raised his glowing blades, light burning brighter than ever.

"—are the part that breaks."

Null's body distorted with fury.

"Then let the breaking begin."

The Void folded inward like a collapsing star.

Shadows surged.

Light exploded.

Ethan launched himself forward, ready for the real battle —

the battle for his identity,

the system,

and every soul trapped inside it.
