Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Identity

"There were also some troubles when purchasing this mansion, but those matters have been resolved."

Eri said with a smile.

As a top lawyer, Eri understood very well that she had to make her work sound difficult so the client would feel the price they paid was justified and wouldn't regret it.

Even if the job was actually simple, she still needed to make it sound complicated.

"Oh? How so?"

Toru asked with interest.

"As mentioned before, this mansion holds significant collection value, and the head of the Toyokawa Family was deceived out of the deed by his 'good son-in-law'."

"If the Toyokawa Family had decided to take legal action and sue, given their influence, it's highly likely the court would have ruled the transaction invalid."

Eri recounted the efforts she had put into handling the situation.

But seeing Toru listening seriously, she chuckled to herself in self-mockery.

Toru was only a few years older than her daughter, yet here she was, using these professional tactics on him.

After struggling in society for so many years, she had ended up becoming the kind of adult she once disliked the most.

Thinking that, Eri dropped the act and spoke frankly. "Actually, it's also because of you, Mr. Fujiwara."

"Once the Toyokawa Family found out it was you who purchased this mansion, they weighed the pros and cons and ultimately gave up on going to court."

She said this with a subtle implication.

Toru's public identity was easy to find out.

Just like you wouldn't know the identity of a CIA field agent, but everyone knows who the CIA Director is.

Ever since Toru returned to the Fujiwara Family, Old Master Fujiwara had, intentionally or not, made this known.

The Fujiwara had deep roots in Japan, dating back to the Asuka period over a thousand years ago.

Their ancestor was Fujiwara no Fuhito, the same man in The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter who nearly tricked Princess Kaguya into marriage.

As times changed, the Fujiwara split into various branches and eventually became the Five Regent Houses within the Kazoku.

Though they no longer held the absolute power they once did, the Fujiwara still carried weight in Japanese political circles. While the Toyokawa Family was also part of the Kazoku, there was still a clear difference in status. Naturally, they wouldn't dare confront the Fujiwara head-on.

Of course, that wasn't the only reason. Another was Toru's identity as Spencer's adopted son.

America's relationship with Japan was like that of a father and son.

As soon as word spread that the CIA Director's adopted son and a member of the Fujiwara Family was buying this Western-style mansion, the Toyokawa Family would back off, unless they were completely brain-dead.

Besides, it wasn't like the mansion was being given away for free. Toru was paying for it.

"But I'm curious, Mr. Fujiwara, you're not very old. Why do you like this kind of European-style Western mansion? I thought young people these days preferred large, flat apartments."

"Could it be I'm just getting old and can't keep up with modern thinking?"

Eri took out a contract and joked.

Toru smiled. "Ms. Kisaki doesn't look old at all. The first time I saw you, I honestly thought you were in your twenties. I was shocked that someone so young could already be known as the 'Undefeated Queen of the Courtroom.'"

Eri couldn't help but laugh. Toru's compliment didn't sound greasy at all. It carried the energy and confidence of youth, making it feel sincere.

Toru added, "When I was in America, I always lived in large, flat apartments. Now that I'm back in Japan, I wanted to try a different style of living."

That was a lie. The real reason was that he needed a spacious place to train. He also had many things that weren't suitable to keep in an apartment.

So he needed a house similar to a villa.

And with his household registration now back in the Fujiwara Family, Old Master Fujiwara, in his joy, offered to give him a house and let him pick one himself.

Toru never bothered with politeness. He went straight for this Western-style mansion.

The price wasn't cheap. It cost over two billion yen. And that was just the purchase price, future property taxes and maintenance would also be significant.

It was said that within the Fujiwara Family, some had concerns about Toru's actions, but all of them were dismissed by Old Master Fujiwara.

Toru picked up the contract in front of him.

Eri sat beside him, and the faint scent of her mature perfume drifted over. At the collar of her suit, there was even a glimpse of lace and cleavage.

Toru glanced briefly, then shifted his full attention to the contract. Whenever he hit a section he didn't understand, Eri patiently explained it in detail.

A contract worth over two billion yen wasn't something to skim over, no matter how much he trusted Eri.

By the time he finished reading it word for word, it was already five o'clock in the afternoon.
