Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 — The Girl in the Cage

The morning breeze carried the scent of fresh bread, roasting herbs, and the chatter of merchants shouting prices. Ren walked through the crowded village marketplace, the pouch of coins tied to his belt clinking softly with every step. He had earned well over the last five days—steady quests, successful hunts, and efficient crafting through his Forestry skill had built up a small reserve of silver.

For the first time in this world, Ren almost allowed himself to relax.

Almost.

Ren froze mid-step. The system? It rarely spoke outside of quests or mission evaluations. He hesitated, looking toward the narrow, shadowed alley branching off the main street. It was quieter there—away from the colorful stalls and laughter.

[Quest Generated: "Chains of Kindness"]

Objective: Free the girl imprisoned by the slave trader without violence.

Reward:

Active Blessing — "Tutelary Light" (Skill & Teaching Efficiency +50%, Exp gain +30%)

Additional Reward: Hidden Affinity Reward (???)

Failure Penalty: Trust Diminishment — System affinity -20.

Ren's hand twitched. "A slave trader…?"

The thought left a sour taste in his mouth. He tightened his grip on the pouch of silver and turned down the alley.

The noise of the market dulled as he entered the narrow street. The cobblestones were uneven here, the air heavy with a metallic tang. At the far end stood three iron cages under a sagging canopy.

Two held men—older, worn, with eyes that had long since lost hope. But the third…

Ren's steps slowed. The last cage, half in shadow, contained a girl no older than him.

She sat quietly, her knees drawn to her chest, long hair a tangled curtain of pale brown falling around her face. But her eyes—an almost luminous silver-blue—watched him the moment he arrived. Calm. Silent. But alive.

The slave trader, a round-bellied man with a patched leather vest, noticed his gaze. "Ah, young man! Looking for help, eh? Strong workers, obedient, no trouble. Cheap today!"

Ren's voice came low and cold. "How much for the girl?"

The man's smile widened greedily. "Ah, fine taste you have! Pretty one, rare eyes. She's no worker—special. Found her wandering in the outer woods. Doesn't speak much. But I'll let her go for a modest price."

Ren narrowed his eyes. "How much."

The trader rubbed his thumb and forefinger together. "Twenty silver. A steal, I tell you."

Ren's chest tightened. Twenty silver. That was everything he had earned this week—coins saved to buy tools, food, even basic repairs for the hut. But the system's quest tone pulsed again.

[Quest reminder: "Free the girl without violence."]

[Trust Evaluation ongoing.]

He took a slow breath. If I do this, I lose all my savings… He looked again at the girl. Dirt streaked her face, but her eyes—steady, unwavering—met his without fear.

Something flickered in him.

"If I walk away now, I'll be no better than the ones who chained her."

Ren reached for his pouch and placed it on the trader's counter. The sound of metal coins clinking echoed through the alley.

"Twenty silver," he said simply. "I'll take her."

The trader blinked, surprised by his lack of hesitation, then laughed. "Ha! Done, done! A smart buyer indeed." He fumbled for the cage key, muttering greedily under his breath. The lock clicked open.

The girl didn't move until Ren stepped closer and extended a hand. "You're free now."

She looked at his hand for a long second, then slowly placed her own in his. Her fingers were thin, trembling slightly, but warm.

As soon as she stepped out of the cage—

A gentle, invisible warmth washed over Ren, spreading from his chest to every limb. His body felt lighter, sharper, more aware. He turned toward the girl—but before he could speak, a faint glow shimmered from her hands.

Her voice, soft and melodic, broke the silence."You… used everything to buy freedom for a stranger."

Ren blinked. "You can talk."

She nodded faintly. "I didn't before. Not until now." Her eyes glimmered faintly. "My name is Lyra. And… I am in your debt."

Ren looked at her in surprise. "Debt? You don't owe me anything."

But the glow around her palms intensified. "No," she whispered, "you gave kindness where there was none. My people… we bless those who free us from bondage. It is part of our soul."

Before he could react, she reached forward, placing her hand lightly over his heart.

Ren felt the pulse again—this time syncing faintly with his heartbeat. His mind sharpened, and for the first time, he could feel the faint whisper of mana drifting through the air around them.

He stared at her. "What are you?"

Lyra smiled faintly. "A survivor… just like you."

They walked back toward the main road together. Ren's coin pouch was now empty, but he felt lighter somehow—as though he'd traded something temporary for something irreplaceable.

Ren looked at the faint text flickering before his eyes and then at Lyra walking quietly beside him.

He had lost everything he'd saved. But for the first time in this new world—he didn't feel alone.

The walk home was quiet. The sun had begun to dip behind the trees, painting the sky in hues of amber and violet. Ren carried an empty coin pouch at his waist, yet somehow his chest felt… full.

Beside him, Lyra walked barefoot on the dirt path, her movements light and graceful despite her thin frame. Her pale hair caught the evening light, glimmering faintly with the same silvery tone that shimmered in her eyes.

Neither spoke for a while. The gentle sound of wind and birds filled the silence until Ren finally broke it.

"You don't have anywhere to go, do you?"

Lyra shook her head. "No. My village… was destroyed months ago. I wandered until they found me."

Ren slowed his pace, watching the small path leading toward the cluster of huts where his siblings waited. "Then stay with me. It's not much, but we make do."

Her steps faltered. "Stay… with you?"

He nodded simply. "There are seven of them—my siblings. They need someone around when I'm gone for quests. Someone kind, capable… trustworthy."

Lyra turned her gaze toward him, her expression unreadable. "And you would trust a stranger that easily?"

Ren gave a faint smile. "You're not a stranger anymore. You've already helped me more than you realize."

Her cheeks warmed slightly. "You gave everything you had for me, Ren… Why?"

He paused, looking ahead at the faint glow of lanterns marking his home. "Because I've seen what happens when people stop caring. I don't want to be that kind of person again."

The small hut came into view. Despite its age, it looked warmer now—patched walls, repaired roof, and faint smoke curling from the chimney. The sound of children laughing reached their ears, and Lyra's steps slowed as the noise grew closer.

As soon as Ren stepped into the open yard, seven small figures turned toward him.

"Big brother!" Mira, the eldest of the younger siblings, ran up first, followed by Finn, Nia, and the rest. Their cheerful expressions froze the moment they saw Lyra standing behind him.

The younger ones blinked, whispering among themselves.

"Who's that?""She's pretty…""Big brother brought home a girl! Is she your girlfriend?"

Ren almost stumbled. "Wha—No! She's not—!"

Lyra's cheeks flushed pink, and she quickly looked away, but the corner of her lips curved upward ever so slightly. "Your family is… lively."

Ren sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Everyone, this is Lyra. She's going to stay with us from now on. Help her out whenever she needs something, alright?"

The children exchanged curious glances before Nia tugged at Lyra's sleeve with a shy smile. "Do you know how to cook?"

Lyra blinked. "A little."

"Then you can help Mira and me tomorrow! Big brother burns food sometimes."

Ren frowned. "That was one time."

Laughter rippled through the hut. For the first time in a long while, the air inside felt alive. Lyra looked around, her gaze softening as the children gathered around her, asking questions, tugging at her hands.

It was… strange. Warm. Like she'd stepped into a life she never thought she could have.

That night, after the younger ones had fallen asleep, Ren sat outside under the faint light of the moon. Lyra joined him quietly, sitting beside him on the wooden step.

"They seem to like you already," Ren said, gazing up at the stars.

Lyra smiled faintly. "They remind me of… what I lost."

Ren's tone softened. "Then maybe you can find something new here."

For a long moment, the only sound was the rustle of the trees. Lyra's fingers brushed the edge of the wooden step, feeling the faint warmth still lingering in the grain.

"Ren," she said softly, "if something happens to you… I'll look after them. That's a promise."

He turned toward her, meeting her steady silver gaze. "That's all I ask."

["Trust Link" strengthening…][Resonance between souls reaching synchronization threshold.]

A soft pulse of light shimmered between them—faint, like moonlight on still water.

Ren's eyes widened slightly as new awareness flooded through him. The faint hum of the world around him became clearer—the heartbeat of life, the thrum of mana within the air. Every sound, every movement, every flicker of energy painted a picture sharper than before.

He clenched his fists experimentally. His breathing slowed. Every muscle felt tuned, ready, as if his instincts now anticipated motion before it even began.

[Combat Instinct (Experienced): Allows predictive reaction to nearby hostiles, heightened spatial awareness, and minimal reaction delay.][Mana Sensitivity (Experienced): Enables detailed mana detection within a 10-meter radius and attunement to faint elemental signatures.]

Ren exhaled slowly, feeling the subtle warmth of the blessing merge deeper into his body.

Lyra watched him silently, sensing the shift in his presence. There was strength in him—controlled, quiet, yet unwavering. Something in her chest stirred at that sight, something unfamiliar and confusing.

She looked down, clutching the fabric of her dress. "I don't know why, but… it feels safe when you're near."

Ren blinked, caught off guard. He smiled gently. "Then stay close. I'll make sure you always feel that way."

Lyra's heart skipped, a warmth blooming deep within that she couldn't name.

[Brother System: Trust Link (Lyra) — Level 1 → Level 2][New Passive Effect: Shared Growth — Lyra gains +10% experience when assisting Ren.]

As the faint system glow faded, Ren leaned back against the wooden wall, looking at the moon above. "We'll build something better here, Lyra. A life worth protecting."

She nodded softly beside him. "Together."

And for the first time in both their lives, the future didn't seem so distant—It felt possible.
