Shota crouched behind a small bush near the academy training field. He wore the plain clothes of a random first-year student. His hair was dyed brown with a quick transformation jutsu, and he had made himself look a little shorter and chubbier. The transformation was perfect.
Nobody would guess the famous Eraserhead of Suna was hiding right under their noses.
Spider had given him one simple task. Blend in at the academy as a normal student. Do not get caught by any of the five hundred academy kids who were now hunting him like a pack of excited puppies. It was just another test after another to better his stealth capabilities as well as his blending in techniques.
The instructors had told the students that Shota Aizawa, the second youngest graduate ever of Suna's Academy to become a genin and the hero who crushed Iwa's Explosion Corps, was hiding among them. They had to find him as a test. The children were beyond excited.
Shota was limited to not leave the academy perimeter. He was not allowed to use body flicker jutsu to escape since that would mean that he would easily outrun the students and he was not allowed to physically hurt the students. He can also only use transformation jutsu once. He has to hide till the academy day was over.
Shota peeked through the leaves. Groups of students ran past shouting his name. Some carried kunai like they were actually going to fight him.
A few older kids, twelve or thirteen years old, walked around with serious faces trying to look smart. The war had forced Suna to recruit more students than usual. The village needed fresh shinobi fast. So the number of children was as high as five hundred that were searching for him.
Shota sighed and rubbed his stomach. Hiding was easy. Staying awake was hard. The sun was warm. The grass smelled nice. A nap would be perfect right now.
He had been safe for two whole hours. He walked between classes. He sat in the back of a classroom and pretended to take notes. He even ate lunch with a group of first-years who never suspected a thing. Everything was going perfectly.
Then he smelled it.
Sweet rice balls. The special kind. The ones only the Matron made with extra honey and red bean paste.
Shota's head turned slowly. Twenty meters away, Shizu sat on a bench with her friends. She had opened her lunch box and placed it in the middle of the grass like a shining treasure. The smell floated straight to Shota's nose.
His stomach growled louder than a lion.
"No," he whispered to himself. "It's a trap. Obviously a trap. My little sister is evil."
But the rice balls called to him. They sang his name in sweet voices.
Shota looked left. Right. Nobody watching. He crawled out from the bush on his belly like a sneaky snake. Ten meters. Five meters. Almost there.
His fingers touched the box.
"GOT HIM!"
Suddenly the ground exploded with children. They came from bushes, from behind trees, from the rooftop. Hundreds of tiny hands grabbed his arms and legs. Someone sat on his head.
"Big brother is caught!" Shizu shouted happily.
"Get off me, you tiny monsters!" Shota yelled. "This is cheating! Rice balls are not allowed in hide and seek!"
Shizu laughed and poked his cheek. "You fell for the rice ball trap! You always fall for the rice ball trap!"
Shota wiggled like a worm but could not move. "Let me go! I surrender! I will buy everyone candy, just stop sitting on my face!"
A smoke bomb appeared in his hand. He crushed it. Gray smoke exploded everywhere. At the same time he made five illusion clones that all ran in different directions.
The children screamed and let go. Shota rolled free and disappeared into the smoke.
He ran to the edge of the academy grounds and hid behind a wall to catch his breath.
Shizu was too smart. That girl was dangerous. She knew exactly how to catch him. A lesson would be needed later.
But for now, he decided to turn the game into something useful. These kids were having fun, but one day they would be real shinobi. A small lesson from him might save their lives later.
He climbed quietly to the roof of the main academy building. The highest point. The perfect napping spot. He lay down on his back, hands behind his head, and stared at the clouds. Then he made one illusion clone of himself napping in the exact same spot. The real Shota hid nearby behind an air vent and waited.
Minutes later, Shizu's voice rang out below.
"I am telling you guys, big brother can be in one of these two spots. He gets bored hiding for long. He wants to take an afternoon nap. He needs quiet and clouds. The garden is too noisy and he does not like to nap when it's too noisy. That leaves the roof. The very top. He is definitely there."
Her friends cheered and ran up the stairs.
Shota smiled from his hiding spot. 'Shizu is too clever for her own good. This might teach her to be careful in the future.'
The group reached the roof. They saw the napping Shota and grinned like cats who caught a mouse.
Shizu ran forward and jumped high. "FOUND YOU BROTHER!"
She landed right on the clone. Her body passed through it like smoke. The illusion popped and vanished.
Shizu's eyes went wide. She looked down and saw half a dozen smoke bombs tied together where the clone had been.
"Oh no."
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Thick purple and green smoke exploded everywhere. Children coughed and waved their arms. Some fell over.
Shizu heard Shota's voice coming from somewhere in the smoke, calm and teasing.
"My dear little sister, a shinobi never goes after the obvious because there is likely a trap or ambush waiting for them. Imagine if there were explosion tags instead of smoke bombs. Always look underneath the underneath. Consider this a lesson on shinobi tactics 101 from your big brother."
