Summer put the bouquet on the desk carefully before she turned her attention to her work. The soft fragrance calmed her.
"Oh, flowers? Who gave you this beautiful bouquet?" Lucy scoffed with sarcasm dripping in her voice. "Did you finally find a boyfriend?"
She burst into laughter.
Two other women walked over, joining in, their mocking giggles echoing across the space.
"A mother of a seven-year-old finally found someone," Lucy continued loudly.
"Of course she would," one of the women chimed in. "How long can a single mother stay alone? Those lonely, sleepless nights must be painful. Isn't it?"
"And here I thought she was trying to seduce the boss," Lucy added. "But clearly she already has someone."
Summer glared at them, their taunting remarks irritating her. "Are you jealous that someone gave me flowers?"
The laughter died abruptly. The women stared at her, stunned for a moment.
