Chapter 141 - A faint hope

Summer and Gideon arrived at the villa. Once the car came to a stop, Summer glanced into the backseat and saw Noel fast asleep.

"Poor thing," she murmured. "He is exhausted."

Gideon's gaze followed hers and landed on Noel, who curled up on the seat. Guilt shadowed his face. "He must've been terrified," he said quietly. "If only I'd gotten there sooner…"

Summer turned to him. Until that moment, she had almost forgotten the unanswered calls. His words brought everything rushing back.

"What kept you so long?" she asked, frowning slightly. "I called you, but you didn't pick up."

Gideon stole a glance at her, then looked away. He couldn't bring himself to tell her about Danica. She would only think he had ignored her when she needed him most.

"I was in the restroom," he said after a pause without meeting her eyes. "I couldn't answer. I'm sorry."

Summer sighed. Maybe he truly had been occupied.
