Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 — Crossroads

Autumn had arrived suddenly, painting the city in shades of amber and gold. Mara loved the way the leaves caught the sunlight, how each gust of wind sent them tumbling across the streets like fleeting moments she could almost catch.

Eli noticed it too, standing beside her on the rooftop of her apartment building, camera slung over his shoulder. He loved this city in a way Mara was just beginning to understand—the way it could feel both enormous and intimate, dangerous and comforting at once.

"Do you ever think," Mara began, pulling her coat tighter around her, "that we're rushing? That maybe… we're too fast?"

Eli looked at her, his expression serious. "I think about it," he admitted. "But I also think about how long I waited to meet someone like you. I'm not in a hurry to leave."

Mara smiled faintly, but her stomach twisted. "It's not that I don't want this," she said softly. "It's just… life keeps reminding me how fragile things are. How easy it is to lose someone you care about. I'm scared I'll get hurt again."

He reached for her hand, the warmth grounding her. "I can't promise you the world won't try to hurt us," he said, voice low. "But I can promise you this: I'll stay. I'll show up, even when it's hard. Even when fear creeps in."

Her heart clenched. She wanted to believe him—oh, how badly she did—but then a message buzzed in her pocket.

It was from a gallery curator: "Are you still interested in showcasing your paintings? We need your answer by tomorrow."

Mara stared at the screen. She'd been offered a chance to show her work publicly for the first time in years. It was her dream—but it meant leaving the city for a few months to prepare the exhibit, potentially putting distance between her and Eli.

Eli noticed her hesitation. "Something's bothering you," he said.

"I… I have an opportunity," she confessed. "But it's in another city. I don't know what to do."

Eli's eyes softened, but she saw the flicker of uncertainty there. "Mara… I want you to do this. Your art—your life—shouldn't be put on hold for me."

Her throat tightened. "But what about us?"

He smiled, faint but real. "If this is what you're meant to do, Mara… then we'll figure out the rest. Together."

For the first time, she felt that fragile, exhilarating sense of possibility. Love wasn't always about proximity. Sometimes it was about trust, letting go, and believing that someone would meet you again—no matter the distance.

They stood in silence on the rooftop, the city stretching out below them. Somewhere in the distance, a soft drizzle began to fall, turning the streets into rivers of light and shadow.

Mara looked at Eli, and for the first time, she felt certain of something: that love, like the rain, had a way of finding the spaces that fear could not reach.

And maybe, just maybe, they were ready to weather the storm together.
