Chapter 86 - ICC Champions Trophy - 2

The Highveld air at Centurion was thin, crisp, and charged with enough static electricity to power a small city. It was September 26, 2009. The ICC Champions Trophy. The "Mini World Cup." And the fixture that stopped the cricketing world: India vs. Pakistan.

The stadium was a cauldron of noise. The stands were a sea of green and blue, flags waving violently, horns blaring. But inside the Indian dressing room, the atmosphere was tense.

A last-minute blow had struck the team. Yuvraj Singh, the Prince of Indian cricket, had pulled up with a finger injury during the warm-up. He was ruled out.

It was a massive loss. Yuvraj was the glue in the middle order.

MS Dhoni had to reshuffle his cards.

Yusuf Pathan, the powerful all-rounder, was drafted into the XI.

---

High above the ground, the voices of cricket were ready.

"Good morning to the world from Centurion Park!" Ravi Shastri's voice boomed, cutting through the ambient roar. "It does not get bigger than this. India versus Pakistan. The Group of Death. And we have breaking news right at the toss. Yuvraj Singh is out. A huge blow for India."

"Massive blow, Ravi," Sunil Gavaskar agreed, his tone grave. "Yuvraj is a match-winner. But this opens the door for Yusuf Pathan."

---

MS Dhoni and Younis Khan stood in the middle. Younis looked confident.

He flipped the coin.

"Heads."

Heads it was.

"We will bat first," Younis Khan announced with a smile. "The wicket looks good. Runs on the board in a pressure game is always key."

India XI: Gambhir, Tendulkar, Siddanth, Dravid, Kohli, Dhoni (c/wk), Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan, Nehra, RP Singh.

The First Innings

The Indian team jogged onto the field. The noise was deafening.

Imran Nazir and Kamran Akmal walked out for Pakistan. They were aggressive openers, looking to exploit the first powerplay.

Ashish Nehra took the new ball.

---

Nehra found his rhythm immediately. The ball was swinging in the air and off the seam.

Over 5: Imran Nazir tried to blast Nehra over mid-on. He didn't account for the late inswing. The ball cramped him. He mistimed it, spooning a catch to Harbhajan Singh at mid-on.

WICKET 1: Imran Nazir c. Harbhajan b. Nehra 20.

"First blood to India!" Ramiz Raja lamented on air. "Nazir looked dangerous, but Nehra was too smart. He cramped him for room."

Pakistan: 35/1.

Younis Khan walked in.

Nehra continued his spell. In the 9th Over, he produced a peach.

He angled one across Kamran Akmal. Kamran poked at it tentatively. The edge flew low to Rahul Dravid at slip, who took a sharp catch.

WICKET 2: Kamran Akmal c. Dravid b. Nehra 19.

Pakistan: 53 for 2.

---

Younis Khan and Shoaib Malik tried to rebuild. They played cautiously against RP Singh and Nehra.

But Dhoni introduced spin early. Harbhajan Singh.

In the 15th Over, Bhajji tossed one up. Younis Khan, usually so good against spin, tried to drive. The ball dipped and turned. He chipped it straight to short cover.

WICKET 3: Younis Khan c. Raina b. Harbhajan 20.

Pakistan: 75 for 3.

"India is all over them!" Shastri roared. "Three big wickets! Pakistan needs a partnership, and they need it now!"

---

Mohammad Yousuf joined Shoaib Malik.

They stopped the rot. They rotated the strike beautifully, finding gaps that didn't seem to exist.

Dhoni rotated his bowlers. He brought on Yusuf Pathan. He brought on Siddanth Deva.

Siddanth bowled with control. He wasn't bowling express pace; he was bowling heavy lengths, trying to force a mistake.

But Yousuf and Malik were in the zone.

They added 50. Then 100. Then 150.

The Pakistani fans found their voice. Drums beat in the stands.

Shoaib Malik reached his 50. Yousuf reached his 50.

---

Dhoni threw the ball to Siddanth in the 43rd Over.

"Break this, Sid," Dhoni said. "We need a wicket."

Siddanth ran in. Mohammad Yousuf was batting on 75, looking set for a hundred.

Siddanth bowled a Cross-Seam Delivery at 142kph.

Yousuf tried to run it down to third man. The ball bounced a fraction more than he expected.

It took the outside edge and flew to Dhoni.

WICKET 4: M. Yousuf c. Dhoni b. Deva 75.

"Finally!" Gavaskar exclaimed. "The partnership is broken! Deva gets the breakthrough with the extra bounce! A crucial wicket at a crucial time!"

The Death Overs Carnage

Shoaib Malik didn't stop. He reached a magnificent Century off 118 balls. A knock of pure class.

But he fell soon after. In the 45th Over, trying to accelerate against Nehra, he holed out to long-off.

WICKET 5: Shoaib Malik c. Kohli b. Nehra 115.

Shahid Afridi walked in. Boom Boom.

The crowd went berserk.

Afridi smashed his first ball for four.

He smashed his second for six.

Dhoni called Siddanth for the 48th Over.

"Keep it away from his arc," Dhoni warned.

Siddanth ran in. Afridi cleared his front leg, aiming for Johannesburg.

Siddanth saw the movement. He bowled a wide yorker at 148kph.

Afridi reached for it. He sliced it.

The ball went high in the air towards deep point. Gautam Gambhir settled under it.

WICKET 6: S. Afridi c. Gambhir b. Deva 15.

Pakistan scrambled in the final two overs.

Pakistan Finished: 294 for 9.

---

Studio:

Ian Chappell: "295 to win. In a pressure game against Pakistan? That is a mountain. Shoaib Malik played a gem. India's bowling was decent, but they let the middle overs drift. Nehra was the pick of the bowlers."

Ravi Shastri: "It is a record chase if India pulls it off. The lights are on. The ball might skid. But Pakistan has a formidable attack. Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Rana Naved. This is going to be a cracker."

---

The lights at Centurion were dazzling. The atmosphere had shifted from festive to hostile.

Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir walked out.

Mohammad Aamir and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan took the new ball.

---

In the 5th Over, facing Aamir, Gambhir poked at a delivery, leaving him.

Edged and taken.

WICKET 1: G. Gambhir c. Kamran b. Aamir 10.

India: 25 for 1.

---

Siddanth Deva walked out at Number 3.

The Pakistani players circled. They remembered the T20 World Cup. They remembered the 188 runs.

As he marked his guard, the Pakistani fielders surrounded him.

Kamran Akmal (Keeper): "Aa gaya bacha! Oye Aamer, isko bouncer maar! Dekhte hain kitna dum hai!" (The kid is here! Hey Aamer, bowl him a bouncer! Let's see how much strength he has!)

Shoaib Malik: "Yeh T20 nahi hai chote! Yeh mardon ka game hai!" (This isn't T20, little one! This is a game for men!)

As Siddanth marked his guard, Shoaib Malik chirped from mid-on.

Siddanth ignored him. He looked at Sachin. Sachin tapped his bat. "Watch the ball. Ignore the noise."

Pakistan had a plan. Bodyline.

Rana Naved banged it in short. The ball whistled past Siddanth's helmet.

Next ball. Another bouncer. Aimed at the throat.

Siddanth swayed.

Umar Gul came on. He bowled aggressive lines, staring Siddanth down after every delivery.

They were trying to rile him up. Trying to get the 18-year-old to play a rash shot.

---

Over 12. Saeed Ajmal into the attack.

Siddanth was on 18. Sachin was on 35.

Siddanth tapped the ball to mid-wicket and called for a quick single.

He took off.

Saeed Ajmal moved across the pitch to collect the ball (which fielder was throwing). But as Siddanth ran past him, Ajmal seemed to shift his line. He stuck his leg out slightly, dropping his shoulder into Siddanth's path.

It was subtle, but at full sprint, it was dangerous.

Siddanth's reflexes flared red. Collision imminent.

Instinctively, Siddanth twisted his body mid-stride, performing a Parkour-style side-step. He narrowly avoided Ajmal's shoulder but brushed against his hip.

Siddanth stumbled but kept his balance, diving into the crease just as the throw came in.

Safe.

But the ball was dead.

Siddanth stood up. The adrenaline spiked. It wasn't just a block; it was malicious.

He turned around, eyes blazing.

He walked straight at Saeed Ajmal.

Ajmal stood there, smirking. "Dekh ke bhaag na, andha hai kya?" (Run carefully, are you blind?)

Siddanth snapped.

He charged at Ajmal, chest heaving.

"Kya bola be?" Siddanth roared. "Jaan bujh ke beech mein aaya na tu? Cricket khelna hai ya kushti? Aaja, dikhata hoon tujhe!" (What did you say? You came in between on purpose, right? Do you want to play cricket or wrestle? Come, I'll show you!)

Ajmal stepped forward. "Zubaan sambhaal ke baat kar." (Watch your tongue.)

Siddanth got in his face. "Haath laga ke dikha! Yahin pitch mein gaad dunga!" (Dare to touch me! I'll bury you right here in the pitch!)

Suddenly, Sachin Tendulkar grabbed Siddanth's jersey and yanked him back.

"Siddanth! Bas! Chup!" Sachin shouted.

Umpires Billy Bowden and Simon Taufel rushed in.

Commentary:

Ravi Shastri: "Tempers are flaring! Deva has lost his cool completely! He felt Ajmal blocked his path. Sachin is acting as the peacemaker."

Taufel issued a warning.

Sachin grabbed Siddanth's helmet grill.

"Pagal ho gaya hai kya?" Sachin hissed, his eyes intense. "Yahi chahte hain woh! Ki tu gusse mein wicket phenk de. Agar tujhe badla lena hai, toh muh se nahi, bat se le. Chauka maar usko. Woh zyada dard dega." (Are you crazy? This is what they want! For you to throw your wicket in anger. If you want revenge, don't take it with your mouth, take it with the bat. Hit him for four. That hurts more.)

Siddanth breathed heavily. He looked at the scoreboard. India: 70/1.

"Theek hai Paaji. Sorry."

---

The game resumed, but the atmosphere was toxic. Every dot ball was cheered by the Pakistanis.

In the 15th Over, tragedy struck.

Sachin Tendulkar, looking to break the shackles against Ajmal, misread the doosra. He chipped it to mid-wicket.

WICKET 2: S. Tendulkar c. Younis b. Ajmal 43.

India: 90 for 2.

Target: 295.

Required Rate climbing.

---

Rahul Dravid walked out.

The contrast was stark. Siddanth was pacing like a caged tiger. Dravid was calm as a monk.

"Partnership," Dravid said simply. "1 run at a time."

What followed was a partnership of supreme quality.

Dravid anchored. He blocked the good balls and rotated the strike with soft hands.

Siddanth channelled his rage into focus.

He stopped trying to hit the bowlers; he started dissecting them.

He stepped out to Ajmal and drove him inside-out over extra cover for four. A shot of pure arrogance.

He pulled Umar Gul in front of square for four.

They added 50 runs. Then 80.

Siddanth reached his Half-Century off 55 balls. He didn't raise his bat. He just adjusted his gloves and stared at the Pakistani balcony.

"He is playing a gem of an innings," Gavaskar noted. "After that incident, he has locked in. This is maturity beyond his years."

The partnership reached 100 runs.

Siddanth had scored 56 of them.

But the required rate was touching 7.5.

Dravid tried to up the ante. He hit Afridi for a four, but on the next ball, he tried to sweep and was trapped LBW.

WICKET 3: R. Dravid lbw b. Afridi 58.

India: 190 for 3. Overs: 35.

105 runs needed off 90 balls.

---

Virat Kohli walked out.

He was young. He was brash. And he had seen his best friend get tackled.

Virat didn't take a guard quietly.

Umar Gul: "Aa gaya Dilli ka hero. Jaldi wapas bhej denge." (Here comes the Delhi hero. We'll send him back quickly.)

Kohli stopped. He turned to Gul.

"Tu bowling kar le, chup chaap chutiye," Kohli spat. "Zyada bolega toh ball dhoondte reh jaoge." (You just bowl, quietly. If you talk too much, you'll be left searching for the ball.)

Kohli was getting angry. "Ben Stokes," He swore loudly after missing a ball.

Over 40: Umar Gul

Kohli was on 20. Siddanth was on 85.

Kohli decided he had had enough of the sledging.

Ball 1: Gul bowled length.

Kohli whipped it over mid-wicket. The sound was like a gunshot.

SIX.

He stared at Gul.

Ball 2: Gul went short.

Kohli hooked. Middle of the bat.

It flew over fine leg.

SIX.

Kohli pointed his bat at the bowler. "Ben Stokes, Bowl it again!"

Ball 3: Gul panicked. Full toss.

Kohli smashed it straight down the ground.

SIX.

Three in a row. The Indian fans were delirious.

Ball 4: Kohli tried for the fourth. He stepped out blindly.

Gul bowled a slower yorker.

Kohli missed. The stumps shattered.

WICKET 4: V. Kohli b. Gul 41 (28 balls).

India: 235 for 4. Overs: 41.

60 runs needed off 54 balls.

Kohli walked back, furious with himself, smashing his bat on his pads.

But he had changed the momentum.

---

MS Dhoni walked out.

The coolest man in the stadium.

He met Siddanth in the middle.

Siddanth was on 95. He was sweating profusely. The physical toll of the heat and the emotion was high.

"Just stay," Dhoni said. "We run hard. We finish this."

---

Over 42: Saeed Ajmal.

The man who had tripped him.

Siddanth was on strike. 95.

Ajmal bowled the doosra.

Siddanth read it. He waited. He played it late, guiding it past short third man.

The ball raced to the boundary.

FOUR.

He moved to 99.

Next ball. Single to long-on.

CENTURY.

100 off 98 balls.

His third ODI century. In a chase against Pakistan. In a major ICC tournament.

The stadium erupted.

Siddanth took off his helmet. He didn't scream. He didn't jump.

He walked to the middle of the pitch.

He turned to the Indian flag fluttering on the stand.

He snapped a sharp Salute.

Then he looked at the sky, closing his eyes for a second. Thank you.

He looked at Saeed Ajmal and gave him a cold nod. Game over.

"Cometh the hour, cometh the Devil!" Shastri bellowed. "What a knock! Under pressure, under fire, he has delivered a century for the ages! He has anchored this chase perfectly!"

Dhoni walked up and hugged him. "Brilliant, Sid. Now let's finish it."

---

With Siddanth set and Dhoni fresh, Pakistan fell apart.

They stole singles. They converted ones into twos with lightning running.

Siddanth hit Afridi for a massive six over long-off.

Dhoni unleashed his power against Rana Naved.

Equation: 4 runs needed off 12 balls.

Over 48: Rao Iftikhar Anjum.

Dhoni on strike.

Ball 1: Length ball.

Dhoni didn't run. He swung.

The ball flew high into the night sky over deep mid-wicket.

The crowd roared before it even landed.

SIX.

INDIA WINS.

India: 296 for 4 (48.1 Overs).

Siddanth Deva: 115 (108 balls).*

MS Dhoni: 20 (12 balls).*

---

Post-Match Presentation and Scenes

The moment the ball crossed the rope, Siddanth dropped his bat and raised his arms. Dhoni walked over, pulling a stump out of the ground, and handed it to Siddanth.

"Yours," Dhoni smiled.

Siddanth took the stump. He looked at the Pakistani team.

Saeed Ajmal walked past. He didn't look at Siddanth.

Younis Khan, the captain, came over and shook Siddanth's hand.

"You played well," Younis said, a grimace of respect on his face. "Too good today."

The Presentation

Ravi Shastri: "A magnificent game of cricket! nearly 600 runs scored! But the chase was orchestrated by one man. The Man of the Match is undoubtedly Siddanth Deva!"

Siddanth walked up. The crowd chanted "DEVA! DEVA!"

He looked calm, the anger from the first innings gone.

Shastri: "Siddanth, 115 not out. Chasing 295 against Pakistan. Describe the feeling."

Siddanth: "It's special, Ravi bhai. Pakistan is a tough side. They bowled really well up front. We lost wickets at crucial times, but the partnerships with Rahul bhai and Virat were key. Rahul bhai kept me calm, and Virat... well, he just shifted the momentum with those sixes."

Shastri: "There was a moment in the first innings... a bit of a collision with Ajmal. You seemed angry. Did that fuel you?"

Siddanth paused. He chose his words carefully.

"It's cricket. Things happen in the heat of the moment. I was upset because I thought it was dangerous. But Sachin paaji told me to channel that anger into runs. I think that advice worked."

Shastri: "It certainly did. You're making a habit of scoring hundreds in big chases."

Siddanth: "I just want to win games for India. That's the only stat that matters."

---

The team was ecstatic. Beating Pakistan in an ICC event was always the highlight.

Virat Kohli sat with an ice pack on his shoulder (from swinging so hard).

"Three sixes," Virat grinned. "Did you see his face? Gul looked like he saw a ghost."

"And then you got out," Siddanth pointed out, sitting down next to him. "You missed a half-century, Chiku. You were batting like a dream."

Virat shrugged. "Next time. Today was your day. That salute... iconic."

Dhoni stood in the center.

"Great win, guys. But remember. Australia is next. They are the World Champions. Tonight we celebrate. Tomorrow we prepare."

Siddanth leaned back in his chair, holding the stump Dhoni gave him.

He looked at the stump.

One down. Two to go in the group.
